My name is William Noiles and I am thrilled to be joining First Baptist Christian School this year as the technology teacher. We have a lot of exciting activities and learning opportunities planned for students to teach them all the fundamentals of computers and how to use technology appropriately. Here are our major goals for this year:
- Improve our typing skills and learn how to properly navigate Microsoft Word.
- Learn how to create formulas, charts, and graphs with Excel.
- Research topics online and create engaging Power Point presentations.
- The basics of writing computer code and programming robots!
The computer lab is now conveniently located in the same space as the library, providing students and teachers with one area to conduct research. This year the students will be working with desktop computers, laptops, ipads, and we will be programming some newly purchased robots!
September and October 2017
Students in grades 2-6 have already completed a typing assessment; this provides us with a benchmark to compare to at the end of the school year. Students in grades 1-6 will continue with typing lessons throughout the year to improve their skills. We will be focusing on Microsoft word and an introduction to computer coding over the next two months.
We will be using code.org for our introduction to coding. This free website provides lessons, tutorials, and games for students of all ages, including pre-readers. If you would like, you can create a free, personalized account for your child following the instructions on the sign in menu. Creating an account will allow you to track your child’s progress, allows students to save their work, and provides students with the opportunity to continue the learning at home! Once you create an account, or if you already have one, please give your child the username and password so that they can log in on the school computers during our technology time.
I’m looking forward to working with your children throughout the school year! If there’s anything I can do to enhance your child’s learning experience please don’t hesitate to reach out.
