First Baptist Christian School students celebrated their own version of the Winter Olympic Games with a variety of activities and events recently.
The Olympic Day celebrations incorporated all classes and grade levels representing countries with their flags flying high above the school’s gym hall.
To give the day an even more Olympics feel student teams took turns in participating in various actives such as a torch relay, figure skating, luge and skeleton, a biathlon, curling, ski jumping, table hockey and cross country skiing.
Physical Education teacher Clair Hughes said most of the children at the school had not seen snow in their lives and it was a good way for the students to learn about the Winter Olympic Games.
“The children have had an exciting week in physical education. They have not only learnt about the different winter Olympic events but have experienced them too.
“Students learnt about Dow Travers, Cayman Islands alpine skier and you never know, this might be the start of Cayman entering more athletes in the winter Olympics in the future,” said teacher Hughes.
“Feedback from parents has been very positive, they have had children come home and say ‘I tried the luge today’ or ‘I did biathlon in physical education,’ and when they see the sports on television they can relate to them.”
Fourth grader Miguel Benito said, “I like ski jumping and learnt that in the Olympics it’s about taking part. I just wish we could have snow in the gym.”
Grade 1 student Abigail Seymour, said “My favourite event was figure skating because it was fun to do….and fun to slide.”
At the end of the week, students were acknowledged for their participation in the staged events.
