Optional Home Learning – week beginning June 22, 2020

Dear Grade 1 Parents,

It’s hard to believe that the school year is over. What a year!

The attached activities in the Home Learning Grid and in Seesaw are optional and a reminder too that there are no more Zoom sessions. Please feel free to use any of these activities during the summer holidays too.

Please remember to drop off any remaining school textbooks, library books, reading books and the plastic/cardboard clock at school this week. There are a few items of work to collect for each child from the breezeway in the main building.

We have LOVED teaching your children this year and will really miss having them in our classes. We would like to thank you for all your support in getting through Home Learning. We couldn’t have done it without you. May you all have a wonderful Summer Break!

Next week, there will be an optional learning grid full of fun activities and ideas should you wish to use it.

This week, the children will be combining their research skills from Literacy and Social Studies to find out about our Cayman Heritage and Symbols – see Literacy learning grid for details. For Wednesday’s lesson, children can use the attached flag and coat of arms template or create their own.

Home Learning – week beginning May 25, 2020

Hello again moms and dads,

Guess what? This Friday is CATCH UP DAY!!! We won’t be assigning any new work for that day. Instead, there is the usual spelling test and an optional reading activity. If your child is missing any assignments, please use this day to catch up on them.

We are discovering more exciting tools and resources on Seesaw for on-line learning. Please help us navigate this by giving us feedback on how it is working for both you and your child. We feel that it will make things easier and save on printing too.

The School Office has emailed all families the re-registration forms for next academic year. Please ensure these are returned by Friday May 29, 2020.

This week’s reminders:

  1. Our Zoom Meetings continue at 10:00-10:30am.
    • Monday – No Zoom. Please use that time to watch this week’s Chapel: https://youtu.be/POZxadj7NbE
    • Tuesday – Only 1A Show and Tell (describe an animal)
    • Wednesday – Storytime with Mrs. Wade
    • Thursday – Only 1B Show and Tell (describe an animal)

Home Learning – week beginning May 18, 2020

Hello again moms and dads,

We hope that you have had a lovely long weekend and that you were able to switch off.

This week’s reminders:

  1. Here is the Chapel link for this week: https://youtu.be/xtpjoljUMgw – please copy and paste into your internet browser to watch. Why not get the whole family watching together!?
  2. Our Zoom Meetings continue from 10:00-10:30am:
  • Monday– No school, no Zoom
  • Tuesday– Only 1A Show and Tell (see Literacy plan for details)
  • Wednesday– Storytime with Mrs. Wade
  • Thursday– Only 1B Show and Tell (see Literacy plan for details)
  • Friday– Let’s give thanks together and play a game
  1. Because it is a short week, there will be no Science, Social Studies or Spanish this week.

In Literacy, Mrs Wade is starting a short writing project to develop the children’s descriptive writing and research skills. This is a step-by-step process that will be explained in detail each week. Please follow each step, each week, to ensure children learn the whole writing process to become confident, independent writers. For this week, children will need 2 copies of the ‘Web’ sheet (either printed or drawn out twice) – one for Tuesday’s activity and one for Thursday’s activity.

If you are having any problems accessing your child’s Epic account, please email Mrs Wade for their login.

Please remember to drop off any library books or reading books in the containers near the elevator in the main building on your named alphabet day (remember, school is closed on Monday due to the Public Holiday).

Home Learning – week beginning May 4, 2020

Dear Parents,

Welcome to a new week moms and dads. Looking back to when we started, we are amazed at how far we have all come. Again, thank you for all you are doing in helping us teach your children.

Zoom Meetings: We have loved seeing the children on Zoom. From this week, we will be doing live sessions every Monday-Friday from 10:00-10:30am, excluding Public Holidays. These sessions are not mandatory! We understand that sometimes you just can’t make a session, families have multiple children all trying to access technology at the same time and some parents are still working from home. Due to online etiquette, it would be helpful if you could remain somewhere nearby whenever possible throughout the session, however, do not feel like you must sit next to your child. All live sessions will be a maximum of 30 minutes. Please note that Monday, Wednesday, Friday is for both classes, Tuesday is 1A only and Thursday is 1B only. We will email the new Zoom link which will be used for every session. The log in details will also be posted on Seesaw in the ‘Activities’ section.

Monday

10:00-10:30am

Tuesday

10:00-10:30am

Wednesday

10:00-10:30am

Thursday

10:00-10:30am

Friday

10:00-10:30am

Both classes: Morning devotion/songs

Bible story & discussion

1A only – Show & Tell (see Literacy plan for details) Both classes: Story time with Mrs Wade 1B only – Show & Tell (see Literacy plan for details) Both classes: Class discussion / subject updates as appropriate
Mrs E will continue to pre-record short Math/Science videos as appropriate and the weekly story comprehension

Please note, these sessions will not be replacing the weekly learning. They are to support and extend. We will still put the weekly learning plan and resources on the Blog as usual.

An important Math Tip: There is a PowerPoint to go through with your child on Friday before they do their final quiz on shapes. The PowerPoint will be very good revision for them. Mrs E will email this separately as the file is too big to upload to the Blog.

A look ahead: May 11-15 – We are taking part in Spirit Week. This means there will be a slightly less formal approach to learning for the week. We will still meet on Zoom from 10:00-10:30 each day. Daily themes have been planned; however, these are NOT mandatory. Please do not feel like you have to create an outfit for each day.

Monday 11th – Dress in Blue/Yellow clothing/accessories

Tuesday 12th – Wear wacky clothes or have a crazy hair day

Wednesday 13th – Wellness/Mental Health Day (no dress up required)

Thursday 14th – International Day – dress in colors from a country of your choice

Home Learning – Week beginning April 27

Hello Parents,

We hope that you had a wonderful weekend. Moving into Week 6 of home learning now. Here are a few important reminders:

  1. Quizizz: please make sure that first names and surnames of your child are used.
  2. Each Quiz has a time lapse. When allocating deadlines, we have allowed for a grace period but once it has expired, we cannot reassign with new quiz codes. These Quizzes are an important form of our assessments. Please make sure that they are completed or communicate with us if you are unable to do them.

Zoom Meetings: Mrs Wade and Mrs Every are looking forward to seeing Grade 1 on their designated days. Please see the Literacy weekly learning grid for details. Log in information will be emailed separately.

1A – Tuesday at 10:00am

1B – Thursday at 10:00am

STAR Tests (RENLearn)

The whole school has been doing STAR Testing online and the school leadership would like us to continue.

Monday: Reading Test. Please do not help your child with the reading once they are logged in.

Thursday: Math Test (or before if you choose). Students may use counters and number charts. They may want to work answers out on a scrap piece of paper too, however, be aware that the questions are timed. We do not have access to change this. You will need to read the questions to your child but please don’t assist in the answering of them. Please also be aware that some topics have not been covered yet. For example, money and interpreting graphs. The tests will also gage general knowledge. Each child is on a different level based on how they have done in their previous STAR tests so please don’t be alarmed if their questions reflect Grade 2, 3, 4 levels.

Math: If you don’t have a printer, drawing and writing answers on paper is absolutely fine. Children will just refer to the activity sheets on the screen. The activities have been uploaded in landscape format with 2 to a page. If you wish to print one to a page in portrait, please feel free to edit the document.

Literacy: Over the next few weeks, we will be learning about Descriptive Writing. This week’s task is an introduction to the topic.

Technology: Ms Kirsten has offered to upload her lessons to Seesaw. Watch out for updates to your child’s account.

Music: There are several children who still need to complete their Music assignment from last week. Ms Janelle has asked that you use the time this week to complete the assignment.

Home Learning – Week beginning April 20

Welcome back to Home Learning! We hope that you have all had a relaxing Easter Break despite the circumstances. It was so lovely to see the Easter crafts the children have done.

Hopefully things will feel easier in this final quarter as everything is already set up and you are all familiar with Seesaw, Quizizz, Epic and Mathletics. As you would have read in Mr. Holtzhouse’s email, we hope to simplify the workload for you. So there will be NO PROJECTS this quarter!

As usual, we have uploaded the entire week’s plans for you to see in one go. Please aim to complete the Bible, Literacy and Math each day and fit in the other subjects when you can. We need to continue taking register, so please remember to upload work to Seesaw daily and stay in contact with us on the days you just can’t get to it all.

Please let us know if you don’t have a printer at home as we have some exciting activity sheets for the next few weeks.

Unfortunately, Ms Janelle is having some technical difficulties with the Quaver software. We will send the music lesson information as soon as possible. If you have any questions about Music, PE, Spanish or Technology, please email the Specialist teachers directly.

9 weeks to go! We can do this!!!
