Welcome Back

 Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school!  I am so excited to be working with you and your child this year! I hope you have had a restful summer and are ready for a fabulous year in Second Grade.  In this letter I hope to explain some of our classroom procedures, if at any time you have any questions please feel free to contact me.

  • Spelling

Your child will receive their spelling list (words are given according to the group they are in) every Friday.  Spelling tests will be given each Friday. Please take time each night to look over the spelling words you missed.

  • Reading Journals

Your child will be required to read for 15 to 20 minutes 4 nights a week and record in their reading log. This will be sent home on Monday, September 7, 2009.  Reading logs will be turned in monthly and will be plotted on a graph to see how much they are reading.  They will be required also to write a “Book Report” on one of the books they have read.

·     Behavior Plan

The goal of our classroom discipline plan is to earn worms and not have them taken away.  Students will be given 5 worms a week on Monday.  In addition, students will have many opportunities throughout the week to earn additional worms.

·     Monthly Rewards

Students who have kept 5 worms or more in their bowl for 3 out of the 4 weeks of the school month will be the “Star Student” of the month.

·     Homework

Homework should be a time to reinforce skills learned during the school day. Students should read at least 15 -20 minutes each night.  Also, any work that was not completed in class may also become part of your child’s homework. For those nights that homework does not take as long, students should be encouraged to read for a bit longer, do research on a favorite animal, write a letter to a friend, write a journal entry, or anything else along those lines.

  • Penalties

While I wish this section did not need to be included…..Students, who show inappropriate behavior, turn in late homework,  do not follow directions and whom are unsettle during class time etc… will lose a worm.

In addition, when necessary, your child will be asked to fill out a behavior contract. This contract will be signed by the student, teacher and parent and then filed in the student folder. Your support will be so appreciated in turning this behavior around!

Thanks for your cooperation and support.

Kind regards

Audrey Lewis
