Week in Review

This week was a short one.

For the days spent in the classroom, students were introduced to prefixes (un, re, dis), students are learning about the words that you add a prefix to and how it changes the meaning of the word. Students continue to learn about nouns, next week during integration, they will learn about collective nouns, as we were unable to start it this week.

Students will continue to practice using money; learning addition and subtraction of money.

Students will do their Social Studies assessment on Monday.

We will review the Science assessment next week and spend some time reviewing areas that students found difficult.

Updates and Integration

Please see attached the Numeracy project students are required to work.

Project

Literacy

Students continued learning about nouns. They practiced using proper nouns and plural nouns in writing stories as they wrote their Personal Narratives this week.

In phonics students learned words with common final blends; such as nd, ng, nk, nt, ft, xt, mp.

Note: Please disregard the part on the homework sheet that speaks to comprehension worksheet. We looked at one question as an example, which led to us going through the entire worksheet, and hence students completed that part.

Science

Students learned about the contribution of humans on the environment, the importance of recycling, and natural occurrences in the environment that brings about both harmful and helpful changes.

Next week students will start learning about Weather and the different types of climatic conditions.

Social Studies

Students continued learning about the the districts of Cayman. Students are learning to identify their surroundings, their neighbourhoods, what is close by, and the direction school is from home.

Bible

This week students started learning about their Elijah. They learned of Elijah trusting God in all things and at all times. We will continue our study on Elijah next week as week focus on: 1 Kings 18:1-45, 2 Kings 2:1-11, Psalms 46, and Exodus 20:2-6.

Week of January 6-10, 2020

Welcome back. Happy New Year, wishing you all God’s continued blessings. I hope everyone had a great Christmas. The students enjoyed sharing their best moments of Christmas break…. And now we are back at it.

Numeracy

As students continue to learn regrouping when subtracting two digit numbers, this week we focused on two methods:

  • Subtracting by using a number line, starting with the number we are subtracting and ending with the number we are subtracting from. Then adding the amount of jumps between numbers.
  • Subtracting by borrowing from the tens column to the ones.

Please see attachment showing both ways.

Students are to use the methods shown in the pictures when doing their homework. Method A shows how students work it out and the other photo shows the explanation of the working out for parents’ reference and the last photo shows Method B.

Literacy

This week for Phonics we focused on words ending with doubled consonants and words with consonants ‘ck’. Students practiced spelling words with the mentioned consonants, searching for them in the dictionary, using them in crossword puzzles and using them in sentences.

In Grammar students continued learning about Proper Nouns and how to write them correctly. They learned that proper nouns can be special nouns/names; of pets, days of the week, months, place and special things.

For writing; students are learning how to properly organize their thoughts and or ideas on paper, by using a graphic organizer before compiling a story.

In comprehension we focused on using text evidence to help answer questions. Students learned that text evidence are pictures, specific things the writer has pointed out, and the author’s use of the senses.

Science

Students are learning about plants surviving in different environments other than the one it is use to. Students are using a flip chart throughout this unit. This will allow them to write what they want to learn and to predict what they think they will learn. As we do prediction, we are able to integrate Science with Literacy; as students are required to make predictions in comprehension after reading the title of the story. Students will also fill in their flip chart with what they are learning and at the end, what they have learned and then compare with their predictions.

Social Studies

Students are learning about the districts of the Cayman Islands. This week we identified the districts and how many they are and named and colour coded them. Students also identified the districts they live in.

Parent and Child homework: Help your child to identify the name of the neighbourhood/street they live in/on and write it down to take to class on Tuesday, when we have our next Social Studies session.

Bible

Students continued learning about David. They learned about David giving thanks to God and how David encourages his people and all people to give thanks to God. Next week we will begin our study on Elijah. Our focus will be on 1 Kings 17: 1-16, Psalm 48, Proverbs 3:5-6.

Update and Class Party

Updates

We spent this week reviewing for assessments.

Students have completed all scheduled assessments and their grades are looking good.

There is no homework for this weekend. Please use the time to read with your children and have them read to you, ask open ended questions (why do you think the character did what he/she did?) and close ended questions (did the character’s problem happen at home?) during and after a reading session. Please have your child pay attention to punctuation and appropriate expressions when reading.

Math text books will be sent home on Wednesday December 18th, for students to continue to practice over the break; addition and subtraction using different methods.

We continue with our study of David next week: David leads in thanksgiving – Our focus will be on the following chapters from 1 Chronicles 15 and 16, Colossians 3:15, Psalms 103, 105 and 106.

Please Note

Students will resume taking home a book each night and writing their reading logs when we return from break in January.

Class Party

An email was sent earlier asking for contribution towards the Grade Two class party on Wednesday December 18, 2019. Please drop off what you are contributing on Wednesday morning to the classroom. Assessments and Updates

My apologies for no updates last week. I was experiencing technical difficulties.

Literacy

We spent time reviewing for upcoming assessments. Students are practicing how to write fictional narrative, by using the writing process, which includes: pre-writing – using a graphic organizer; drafting – writing down their ideas; revising – putting their thoughts in order; editing – reviewing work for spelling errors and capitalization. Our phonics focus this week was consonant blends and consonant digraphs. The difference between blends and digraphs is that blends are two letters that make two sounds and digraphs make one sound. Blends – stick, Digraphs – she. Students continue to practice dictionary use, by finding and reading the definition of the words with consonant blends and digraphs that we looked at this week.

Numeracy

This week as we reviewed using the equal and not equal signs correctly, we also reviewed addition and subtraction and started focusing on addition of two digit numbers. Students are learning to use different methods to carry out addition. They are understanding that they can put everything learned previously into use; such as: adding by using the expanded form of numbers, place value, base ten, number line and place value tables. On Monday students will take home their Mathematics instructions text, which contains all the mentioned methods, along with a practice sheet to prepare for their upcoming Numeracy assessment.

Science

Students carried out an observation, by observing plants in its natural environment and identifying animals that live in the Cayman Islands. They researched other countries that these animals and plants can also be found and made comparisons by noting the similarities of these countries. this led to our discussion and students understanding that plants and animals survive in specific conditions and that their bodies were built for their survival in said conditions. We also reviewed for the upcoming science test. Students did a mock test this week after each review and did very well on each. Their test on Monday will consist of some of the same questions. Students are required to read  pages 182-201 of the Science Fusion text book and pay attention to highlighted information and information in the boxes.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies sessions were spent reviewing material for the Social Studies test, which students did on Friday. One of the Social Studies standards is to locate and use necessary information. Hence students used their text books to search for the answers by reading the allotted pages on the test and locating the answers in the text. This was also good comprehension practice.

Bible

We completed our study on Ruth this week and started reviewing for the bible assessment next Tuesday. Students have been doing well saying their bible verses. Please be reminded to have your child practice the remaining memory verses for December if you notice that he/she doesn’t yet have it signed on their memory verse sheet.  Our study which will take us up to Christmas break will be about David. The chapters we will focus on next week starting Wednesday, are: 1 Samuel chapters 16 and 17.

Please Note

Students did their comprehension assessment on Wednesday December 4th and will instead do their Numeracy assessment on Friday December 13th. This will enable more review time for Numeracy.

You may use the following link to take you to a previous blog post containing the dates of assessments, so you may see the remaining assessments and dates. https://fbcs.edu.ky/grade2/2019/11/09/inside-grade-two/

This week in Grade Two

Thank you parents for taking the time to come in and meet.

Literacy

Students are learning about Nouns: This week we focused on Nouns as names of People, Places, Things and Animals. We will continue with this topic next week. Our writing focus for the remainder of the quarter is Narrative Writing. The first aspect is Fictional Narrative and after the Christmas break we will do Personal Narrative. Please see the attached rubric which will be used to mark Narrative Writing. Narrative_Rubric_Gr2

In Phonics students are learning about consonant blends and the sound of those blends when added to a short vowel or long sound. We continue to pay attention to comprehension: Reading a story and using it to respond to questions and support answers and thinking about the why aspect to an answer given (why did you like that part, why do you think they did that), and identifying the theme and main characters in a story.

Numeracy

Students are learning how and when to use the not equal symbols. We focused mainly on the equal symbol this week, getting an understanding of the similarities. One way is making students aware that whatever is on one side when it is the same as what is on the other side then it is equal therefore the equal symbol is used. The following link may be helpful for you to use at home as a reminder of what was taught. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12xkKtNTAYQ Next week we will continue with equal and not equal.

Science

Students continue learning about animals and plants coexisting and how they support each. This week we focused on adaptation which will continue next week. How are living things adapted to their environment – survival skills, plant protection, and animal protection.

Social Studies

Students continue to learn about map reading and The Cayman Islands – A part of the world. They are learning to locate the Caribbean region and islands in the Caribbean. We will continue to use the compass rose to show location of places on the map.

Bible

We will continue with our study of Ruth next week as we look at the following chapters: Ruth 2-3, 4:1-10, Proverbs 17, Romans 5:6-11. Please have students study their bible verses so they can tell it to me each week.

Grade Two Round-Up

Literacy

Students continue learning about long and short vowel sounds and how to blend them into words. We have also been reviewing consonant sounds that vary, such as the C sound that gives a ‘k’ sound or an ‘s’ sound, and the G sound that gives a ‘g’ and a ‘j’ sound. We continued with comprehension practice, using comprehension strategies to help answer questions, and identifying the main idea. We paid attention to the difference between commands and exclamation sentences this week and spent time reviewing the different types of sentences. Students did a short quiz identifying statements, questions, commands and exclamations.

Numeracy

Students continued learning about ordinal numbers, identifying them, and using them correctly. We spent some time exploring numeracy in the form of simple worded questions. Next week students will learn about equal and not equal to and using the correct signs.

Science

Students are enjoying learning about various habitats, and sharing about habitats they may already know and have seen. This week we explored how plants and animals depend on each other to survive in habitats. Next week students will begin learning about natural changes in habitats and their effects on plants and animals.

Social Studies

Map reading is becoming a natural skill for your second graders and soon you will be less dependent on a GPS as they will be navigating to various locations. Students learned how to use various cardinal points on the compass rose to locate places close to and far from the Caribbean. They also learned of where hurricanes are formed and the path they travel through our warm warms.

Bible

We wrapped up our study on Joshua this week and students did a quiz. Next week we move on to study an extraordinary woman of the bible “Ruth”. You may prepare for the week ahead by going through the following verse during devotions with your child: Ruth 1, Proverbs 12, 18 and 27. Genesis 28 and Deuteronomy 31.

Reminders

School will be half day Thursday November 21, to facilitate Parent Conferences. There will be no school on Friday November 22 as Parent Conferences continue. Hence no spelling words were sent home. Students are to return homework on Wednesday November 20.

Next week students will spell ordinal numbers correctly, write the worded form and the numerical forms. Students are required to continue to review their times tables and their ordinal position sheets.

Science

As students are learning about habitats, they are having a great time seeing habitats first hand, by going around the school yard and identifying the various habitats. Students also get the opportunity to use the internet and books to identify habitats. As we look specifically at birds on Tuesday, students will learn that not all birds fly, hence they don’t all live in trees.

Parent question: Please ask your child the following question. They will give me the answer in class on Tuesday.

What is the habitat of an ostrich and a penguin? They may use the internet or if you have access to animal books; to find their answer.

Social Studies

Students are learning that natural disaster affect Cayman and other Caribbean countries because of our location in the world. They identified our location on the map as they learn of our warm waters. As we focus on Natural disasters next week, students will learn about the path of hurricanes.
