Numeracy
Topic: Measurement – Compare Capacity
Objective: The student should be able to:
• Compare the capacity of two objects to determine holds more and holds less.

Developing Vocabulary: capacity, holds less, holds more,
Lesson Introduction:

Listening Activity:
Please watch the video link below of the read-aloud story “Room for Ripley” by Stuart J. Murphy

Ask the following questions to review:
• How much water was in the tank at first?
• Was the water enough for Ripley? Why?
• Why did Carlos add more water?
• Is a pint more or less than a quart?

Learning Activity:
You will need a measuring cup and a large jar container.

Based on the read-aloud story, give students a measuring cup and a large jar or container. Have students estimate how many cups of water it will take to fill the jar and then keep track of the cups as the container is filled with water.
After the container is filled, help students figure out the capacity of the container. Ask students the following questions:
How many cups of water did you pour in the jar before it was full?
Was it about a pint? (2cups)
Was it about a quart? (4 cups)
Was it about a gallon? (16 cups)

You will need various sized containers, including tall, narrow containers as well as wide, short containers, water/beans/ dry cereal.
Have students choose two different sized containers and dry cereal. Direct them to guess which container will hold more dry cereal and which will hold less dry cereal. Instruct students to check if their guesses were correct. Have students explain to you the relationship of the amount of dry cereal a container holds and the size of the container.

Extending Learning: Display different sizes of containers such as cups, bowls, or buckets. Explain that each container can hold things. Have students fill all of the containers with water to demonstrate, which holds more and which holds less. Point to two containers. Ask, Which one holds more/hold less? Have students explain their thinking. Ask students to check capacity by counting how many cups of water-filled each container. Then have students order the containers from less capacity to greater capacity. Discuss the size of the container and compare this to their capacity.

Task: Please complete the following:

• Draw and label a picture of something that holds more water than your water bottle.
• 2. Draw and label a picture of an object that holds less water than a fishbowl.
• 3. Which object holds more water? A bathtub or a swimming pool? Draw a picture of the object that holds more water.
• 4. Think of an object that holds more water than a water jar. Draw and label your picture.

Bible Story: Easter
Focus: The Empty Tomb
Objective: To know that Jesus is arrested, crucified, and raised from the dead before He ascends to
heaven.

Listening Time: Remind students that everyone sins. Jesus paid the price for everyone’s sins, so they would no longer be separated from God once they chose to believe in Him. Explain that today’s Bible truth will show Jesus did that because He loves them.

Please watch the video link below of the story entitled “The Empty Tomb.”

Teach students the word resurrection, which means a return to life after having been dead. Explain to students that the empty tomb showed that Jesus had victory over death.
Write Happy Ending on two different sheets of paper and help students read the message. Discuss how a story can have sad parts that lead to a happy ending. Ask students to state the sad parts of the happy ending in today’s Bible truth/story. Turn the last five-letter word over so the message reads Happy. Explains that Jesus’ resurrection is Easter’s happy ending!

Ask the following questions to review:
• Why did some leaders hate Jesus?
• What sad things happened in today’s Bible truth/story?
• What was the happy ending?
• How does a true and faithful friend feel when something good happens?
• What about when something good happens?

Learning Activity: Please complete the activity from the Bible textbook on page 114. Instruct students to draw a triangle around the pictures that show how Jesus’ friend reacted when he died, and to circle the pictures that show how Jesus’ friends reacted when they knew He was alive. Let students explain why they marked the pictures the way they did. Next, tell students to trace the sentence Jesus is alive.

Lesson Introduction:

Listening Activity:
Please watch the video link below of the story entitled “Goldilocks and The Three Bears.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oUP2PFeOi8
This introduction is to get the students to begin thinking about the term capacity.

Ask students to think about the characters Mama Bear, Papa Bear, and Baby Bear for a few minutes.
Show the students the three (3) different sized bowls and ask them to choose which of these bowls would make a good bowl for Papa Bear. Ask, what makes the largest bowl a good bowl for Papa Bear?

Discuss with students which bowl would be best for Baby Bear. What makes the smallest bowl a good bowl for Baby Bear?

You will need large and small containers.
Write the vocabulary words on a sheet of paper. Read them, and have students repeat.
Hold up two different sized containers. Explain that some containers can hold more (show larger container), and other containers can hold less (show smaller container). Tell the students that when we talk about capacity, we use words like, “holds more, holds less. Capacity is a word we use to tell how much an object can hold.

Learning Activity:
You will half-gallon container filled with cereal, half – pint container filled with dry cereal, small cup
Show students the half-gallon container of cereal. This container holds this much cereal.
Show students the half-pint container of cereal. This container holds this much cereal. Another name for how much of something a container holds is called capacity. What containers do you use to hold things? Sample answer: I use a shoebox to hold crayons.
Place several empty cups on a table. Hold up the half-gallon container and the half-pint container. Tell the students that you are going to see which one holds more cereal. Pour cereal from the larger container into as many cups as the cereal will fill.
How many cups of cereal did this container fill? Sample answer: about 10 cups.
Repeat using the smaller container to fill as many cups as the cereal will fill. How many cups of cereal did this container fill? Sample answer: three cups
Which container of cereal filled more cups? Large container
Which container holds more cereal? Large container?

Ask students to use their imagination to do this activity. Ask students to compare the weight (using the words heavier or lighter) of the following objects by pretending to lift pairs of items shown. For example, have them pretend to lift an elephant versus lifting a cat. Have students pretend to lift a lunch box versus lifting a bed and so. (please see attachment entitled “Problem Solving Pictures”)

Listening Activity: Please watch the video link below, which explains heavy and light objects.

Learning Activity: Give students a book, e.g., Bible, a crayon, and a sheet of paper. Ask students to hold the book in one hand and the crayon in the other and say which they think is heavier.
Then have students compare the crayon and the sheet of paper and say which object they think is the lighter object.

You can compare as many objects with the students to practice the skill.

Topic: MeasurementCompare Weight
Objective: The student should be able to:
• Use direct comparison to compare objects by weight.

Developing Vocabulary: New Vocabulary: heavier, lighter, weight
Lesson Introduction:
Briefly introduce the idea of weight by putting a book in a cloth grocery bag and put three books in another. Close the bags. Have students hold a bag in each hand. Ask the students, which bag has more weight? The students should indicate the bag with three books. Say, Yes. That weight or bag is heavier. Prompt the students to say heavier.
Now repeat this activity for lighter.

If possible and you have a bucket balance or a weighing scale at home, show students how it can be used to measure weight in the same example as explained above. Allow students to experiment with objects in the house.
Listening Time
If you don’t have a bucket balance or a weighing scale at home, please watch the video link below, which explains how to measure and compare weight.
https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+measure+and+compare+weight+for+kids&rlz=1C1GCEA_enKY863KY863&oq=how+to+measure+and+compare+weight+for+kids+&aqs=c

Learning Activity:
Gather a few objects from around the house such as a stuffed toy, a toy car, a fork/spoon, a Bible, a pencil, a bag pack with books inside, a box of sugar, etc. Have students hold a pencil in one hand and a bag of sugar in the other hand.
Ask students, do these objects feel the same in your hands of different? (Different) Ask, how are they different? Sample answer: The bag of sugar pulls my hand down, but the pencil does not. I can hold it higher.
Explain to the students that because the bad of sugar can pull down his/her hand, the object can be called heavier. The pencil could be held higher. That object can be called lighter.

Ask students to compare other objects in the house to determine which is heavier and which is lighter. Make as many comparisons as you can to practice the skill.

Task: Under the categories Heavy and Light, ask students to draw three pictures of objects that are heavy and three pictures of objects that are light. Instruct students to label all pictures and color them.

On the link below, please ask students to practice comparing weight using the vocabulary words heavier and lighter. https://www.turtlediary.com/game/heavy-and-light.html

Identify items that could become modern-day idols, such as toys, gaming systems, and money, if these items become more important in life than God.

Please read the make-believe story. (see attachment via email)

Ask the following questions:
• What did Jordan think about all day at school?
• How was Jordan’s video game-like idol?
• What did Jordan do when he realized he needed to change the way he thought about his game?

Numeracy
Topic: Measurement – Compare Height
Objective: The student should be able to:
• Use direct comparison to compare the heights of objects.

Developing Vocabulary: New Vocabulary: height shorter, taller.

Lesson Introduction:
• Write each word on a separate sheet of paper.
• Show each word to the student (s), say each word.
• Have students repeat each word.
• Have students tell you what they know about each word. E.g., students might describe their height as shorter than or taller than a sibling’s height.

Listening Time: Watch the read-aloud story on the link below:

Ask the following questions:
• What is the title of the story? (Short and Tall Doesn’t Matter at all by Asaf Rozanes)

• Explain in your own words what the story was about? (Possible answer: it’s about a little girl who shows bravery, kindness, and determination; Mia shows her friends that everyone, no matter how small or different, has talents and skills too.)
• What was different about Mia? (she was shorter than all the other kids)
• What did the sun say to the moon? (I am taller than you. You’ll never be as tall as me; you know that’s true.)
• Who was the shortest of all the kids in the story? (Mia)

Learning Activity: Have students locate a door and a bottle in the house. (Put objects beside each other to compare them). Instruct students to use a measuring tool such as a toothbrush, a tissue roll, a spoon, a fork, a tube of toothpaste, or a bar of soap in the box/package to measure those two objects. For example, the students need to tell how many toothbrushes taller the door is and how many toothbrushes shorter the bottle is.
After the students measure the objects, assist them in comparing the objects by using the words, taller and shorter.
N.B. The students need to compare the height of the door to that of the bottle. Describe it. Sample answer: The door is taller than the bottle, or the bottle is shorter than the door.
Ask students, how do you know the door is taller than the bottle? (Sample answer: the door is taller than the bottle because the height of the door is taller than the height of the bottle.)

Repeat this activity with other objects to practice the skill.

If possible, take students outdoors. Ask them to identify trees/flowers that are tall and trees /flowers that are short. Describe them. Compare objects by using the words shorter and taller.

Task: Discuss the activity on page 153 in the Ready Math Textbook. Encourage students to compare objects based on their heights and lengths.
Complete the activities from the Ready Math textbook on pages 154-156. (The instructions are written on each page)

Extended Practice:
Students should work independently to draw on a sheet of paper, something that is taller and something shorter than them. These objects must be different objects from their practice activity.

• What other people in the Bible demonstrated Courage to do what is right?

Learning Activity: Complete the activity from the Bible textbook on page 62. Give students a ruler (pencils only work as well). Instruct them to draw a line to connect flames of matching colors. When all the lines are drawn, ask students what they notice about the picture. Draw students’ attention to how the lines connecting the flames do not touch Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-Nego, and the son of God. Relate this to the bible truth of how the three men were unharmed when they were thrown into the fiery furnace.
