Roald Dahl Day -Kindergarten B

The children were introduced to the author Roald Dahl and two of his books.

Math- Pictures of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate bar and the chocolate river scenes from the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were used to stimulate discussion and descriptive words. Students scrunched paper to form ‘sweets’. They then wrapped them in sweetie wrappers. This helps develop their fine motor skills. This was tricky for some of the children. In addition we played the ‘Sweetie Swoop’ game. The children ‘factory workers/ Oompa Loompas’ had to gather as many sweets into a cup, using a pair of tongs. They counted the number of sweets collected. This was the most popular game. Students made Play-Doh ‘birthday cakes’ and counted the candles as they inserted them to celebrate Roald Dahl’s birthday.

Then they created their Dream Jars with recycled water bottles, glue, and glitter. The students used their imagination to place their ‘dreams’ inside their jars.7  89

Dinosaur Day!

To wrap up our study of dinosaurs, Kindergarten enjoyed a day of prehistoric fun and games! Students were divided into teams and given dinosaur names, then competed in games such as “Pin the plates on Steggy” and “Feed the T-rex”

We enjoyed dino snacks such as dinosaur scales (potato chips), dino bones (pretzel sticks), herbivore food (fruit platter), carnivore food (sausages), and swamp juice (fruit punch)

The highlight of the morning was an all-out dinosaur hunt where our junior paleontologists dug up dinosaurs and bones from the sand pit. Some of the dinos didn’t want to go extinct, and were still hanging around above ground.

At the end we tallied all the points to see which team won! The yellow Pteradactyls led the competition, but it was a close game, and everyone had tons of fun :).

After lunch we watched “The Good Dinosaur” and enjoyed a beautiful (and delicious!) cake made by one of our students!

Overall the day was a ROARING success!

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Caribbean kids never get a snow day from school. In Kindergarten we’ve been reading books about snow this week, so we thought we would bring the snow day TO school!

Shaving cream+Corn starch makes a marvelously messy, soft, fluffy “snow” that we were able to make into snowballs, snowmen, and snowy mountains. Our classroom floor looked like it had snowed inside afterwards, but thankfully it sweeps up easily! 😉

Christmas Play-dough Fun

Here in Kindergarten, we usually alternate weeks between show and tell and cooking. This week, we “cooked” something a little different – play dough!

All it takes is 2 Cups of flour

kindergarten 014

1 Cup of salt

kindergarten 013

1 Cup of water

and a Dash of oil

and we added a secret ingredient…..glitter!

Then you just mix it up!

and enjoy! Play dough is great for building fine motor skills, and helps develop the muscles needed to write and draw neatly. It’s also loads of fun! Look at some of the creative things we made:

Some Kindergarten Stories

Kindergarten has been hard at work writing stories the last few days in their journals. Parents may want to take a look at the stages of writing that children typically go through as they develop fine motor skills and learn more about letters and words.

Here are a few stories for you to enjoy (If you click on the first photo they will show in a gallery for easier viewing):

The others are not quite finished with their story writing, so look for more stories to come soon!

First Field Trip!

Yesterday, Kindergarten was very excited to get on a big yellow school bus (some of us for the first time ever!) and go on our first Kindergarten field trip!

We went to Camana Bay to see author Karen Kingsbury. We listened while she read her book Far Flutterby with the pictures projected onto the movie screen.

After the story, there was a question-and-answer time, and students asked great questions about being an author, and making books. We learned that Karen Kingsbury started writing stories when she was only 5 years old! She encouraged us all to write the stories that God has put in our hearts, even if we can’t spell all the words correctly yet.

Future authors?

We learned that every story needs some kind of problem, and then a solution to fix the problem. Today at Language time in class, we tried our hand at writing some stories in our journals. Look for a future post featuring some Kindergarten Authors!

What a great field trip!

Introducing Bubbles and Kermit!

Here in Kindergarten we have two little friends who help cheer us up when we are sad or missing Mom and Dad. They also enjoy listening to stories and hearing children count and say their ABCs. Kermit the frog lives in Kindergarten A and loves giving hugs. Bubbles the fish lives in Kindergarten B and enjoys snuggling.

Each of the students in Kindergarten A will have a chance to bring Kermit home for a weekend, and each child in Kinder B will get to bring home Bubbles. The friends will be sent home in a bag along with a notebook where you can record the adventures you have with them over the weekend. We will share these adventures at school each Monday.

Cayman Flower Projects… Wow

A job well done. The kindlers presented a wide array of Caymanian flowers and spoke about their projects with enthusiasm…. Makes me so proud. Take a look

It’s Spring Story time with a Twist

Making bread- a little differently from little red hen
Making bread- a little differently from little red hen

Once upon a time there was a very enthusiastic kindergarten teacher who wanted to open up her kindlers to the world of storytelling.

Well how exactly do I do that?

Make it as real to the kindlers as possible.

This week we read Little Red Hen.
aeiu-square-400

Not exactly a spring themed book but it falls in the fairy tale category ( not really- but go with me). The kids learnt from this story that hardwork has sweet rewards-literally.

Enter my bread maker. As usual there are no pictures of them eating the bread because like little red hen, they ate it all.

Next Up… Tops and Bottoms by Janet Stevens.

tops_and_bottoms-300x274This clever tale with a fairy tale formula, teaches this kids about the various parts of the plant that we eat. Interesting approach to teach kids about the edible parts of plants.

I love this story. It makes me laugh every time.

100 days of school!- Mighty Math style

February 12th-100 days

The kids were very excited to finally reach 100 days of school and had been looking forward to it all week. So in grand fashion the day was devoted to all things 100.

The morning was divided into 4 stations the children worked through. My favorite station was the 100 cups structure. It proved to be a really cool problem solving station because the kids had to figure out how to use all the cups and make sure the cups stayed up. It was quite hilarious when the kids began to jump around, out of pure excitement for their achievement and the structure came tubing down and the would have to start over. Despite this, 100 cups station was a hit.

This self explanitary station require concentration and will power. The children were allowed to eat the cracked or broken bits in their stash while they worked.
