“Center” the learning

Centers are an integral part of the Kindergarten classroom. It is within centers that we give the kids an opportunity to practice their skills.

This week our Math focus was on counting sets of numbers reliably.

After short lessons on the rug, the kids then set off to tackle various tasks on their own. Take a look.

Ok! Lets write down what we know.

Rhyme Time-The Cat in the Hat

In Literacy we did an author study on Dr. Seuss. He was an amazing author that played with words. The use of Rhyme is heavily focused on as well as Alliteration. We have been learning to listen to words that rhyme. It’s a tricky skill to hear words that sound the same at the end. We studied the book ‘The Cat in the Hat’ by Dr. Seuss. We have been generating rhyming strings. Some of us were able to write a rhyming string for a Cat in the Hat and constructed their rhyming hat.

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Caribbean kids never get a snow day from school. In Kindergarten we’ve been reading books about snow this week, so we thought we would bring the snow day TO school!

Shaving cream+Corn starch makes a marvelously messy, soft, fluffy “snow” that we were able to make into snowballs, snowmen, and snowy mountains. Our classroom floor looked like it had snowed inside afterwards, but thankfully it sweeps up easily! 😉

Shaping up in Kindergarten!

Last month our Math focus in Kindergarten was shapes and patterns. We explored both 2-d (flat) shapes and 3-d (solid) shapes, practiced counting sides, corners, and flat faces, and identified real-world objects that are each shape. Below are some shapes and patterns Kindergarten B found around the school.

Christmas Play-dough Fun

Here in Kindergarten, we usually alternate weeks between show and tell and cooking. This week, we “cooked” something a little different – play dough!

All it takes is 2 Cups of flour

1 Cup of salt

kindergarten 013

1 Cup of water

and a Dash of oil

and we added a secret ingredient…..glitter!

Then you just mix it up!

and enjoy! Play dough is great for building fine motor skills, and helps develop the muscles needed to write and draw neatly. It’s also loads of fun! Look at some of the creative things we made:

Some Kindergarten Stories

Kindergarten has been hard at work writing stories the last few days in their journals. Parents may want to take a look at the stages of writing that children typically go through as they develop fine motor skills and learn more about letters and words.

Here are a few stories for you to enjoy (If you click on the first photo they will show in a gallery for easier viewing):

The others are not quite finished with their story writing, so look for more stories to come soon!
