Schools from all over the island competed in the Interprimary School Sports Day on March 22 and 23. FBCS sent 22 athletes to represent the school, and it was an exciting day for all! Three of our athletes placed in their events, and all of our athletes pushed themselves for a personal best.

Lemar McLean from grade 2 placed 6th in the 100 m with a time of 16.10.

Amos Dixon from grade 6 placed 4th in the 100m with a time of 15.70.

Keya Berry from grade 3 placed 4th in the 100m with a time of 16.30, and

the 3rd in the 80m with a time of 12.86.

Congratulations athletes! We are so proud of everyone for representing our school.

Learning boxing basics in dance class

As part of the PE curriculum all our students do an 8 week dance module. Trying to motivate 9 year old boys to dance is quite a challenge and I did it this year by choosing a dance called ‘Punch and Wrestle’ which is all about shadow boxing. To enhance this further we took a trip to the ‘D.Dalmain Ebanks Boxing Gymnasium’ to learn some moves and experience the sights and sounds of a real boxing ring.

The class of 9 boys and 1 girl were very excited! They were taught by Stormin’ Norman Wilson a 62 year old ex Marine who energized the students by showing them his cartwheel and telling them they had to take care of their bodies and keep fit! He is Charles Whittaker’s coach and we also got to see Charles in action going through his drills and training. It is the quietest I have ever seen my class!

The students were taken through some footwork drills and got to wear boxing gloves and step into the ring. They showed Mr. Wilson their ‘Punch and Wrestle’ dance moves and then got to learn some proper punches such as the jab and hook and how to perform them like the pros.

This was a once in a lifetime opportunity they will never forget and its given them a whole new enthusiasm for dance class! A big thank you to Stormin’ Norman Wilson and Mr. Charles Whittaker.

What a fantastic morning we had for our Sports Day at the track. The weather was glorious and we kept busy all morning with 7 different events - long jump, water relay, tennis ball throw, egg and spoon race, sack race, high jump and 60m sprints. Each grade did great and we had a lot of tired out children by the afternoon! Thank you to all who came out and supported us and to all staff who helped this event run smoothly. We had almsot 200 photos and here are just a few -

Buddy work

Grades 5&6 have been putting their coaching skills to the test by working with the Kindergarten students. Buddy work is a fantastic way for the younger and older grades to work together. The K’s get a personal coach/teacher/play mate and the older students get to play teacher!

This win win situation is a wonderful way to see if Grade 5&6 have mastered a skill too because if they are able to teach it to the younger ones they display mastery and understanding of that particular skill. It’s great to see the gym full of active FBCS students all working respectfully and cooperatively in PE.

Well done!

WEE Care Sports Day

Thank you for all who came out for our annual WEE Care Sports Day on Saturday Feb 11th. This is one of my favourite events for the absolute enthusiasm and chaotic craziness that comes from mixing a 100 plus excited little ones with running races, sports equipment and loud cheering! We had lots of fun and everyone did great in their races, especially the parents, although sadly I haven’t received any photos from that event…yet!

The day started with running races - from the tiniest toddlers to the energetic pre-schoolers and then came the serious events! We had the toddlers toddling with scarves and the two year-olds scooping up tennis balls. The 3 year-olds got to do a mini obstacle course with crawling under the parachute, jumping hurdles and going through tunnels, and the four year-olds doing the same with the addition of a slalom in and out of cones and then of course the much loved jumping sacks.

Always the best though is the parents race and this year the ladies took the ‘best sport’ award for doing the obstacle course and going through the kids tunnels! The guys also were jolly good sports by starting off their race in the jumping sacks!

Be sure to come along to next years WEE Care sports day - it will take us all a year to recover!

Today we had our school nurse talk to us in assembly about healthy eating and the good food choices we have to make. Its all about choice, choice at the supermarket, choice when out at the cinema or in a restaurant, the choice to be healthy. Our bodies need a balanced diet and we need vitamins to stay healthy. Come on FBCS kids - let’s make healthy choices and feel great!

What will you choose? Click here for the video we watched.

Rollathon a huge success!!

Thank you to all who participated and raised money to help this years rollathon be a huge success.

We had almost all FBCS participate and a lot of WEE Care children too! It was great to see everyone scooting, skating, triking, boarding and biking endless laps of the car park for 3 hours solid. I received some wonderful feedback from parents and the children did great. Lots of exercise + fun = healthy happy kids! Together both circuits blasted last years lap count of 2500 laps.

This year we raised over $2745 which will go towards new equipment for the PE department. Jade Robinson won our biggest sponsorship collection and recieved a gift certificate raising $502 and Bruce Murdoch raised the most from WEE Care - $108. Our students together completed 3885 laps!!! Way to go FBCS and WEE Care!

Once again FBCS students have had a great time at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club. This is one of the best places in the world to learn to sail. The club offers fully qualified instructors, all students are required to wear lifejackets and a safety boat is with them at all times.

This is a fantastic learn to sail course for ages 5-12 and we have a new session starting Monday April 12th running for 6 weeks til May 28th. We provide transport to the sailing club and ask parents to pick up at 5:30pm from the sailing club.

Bookings now being taken for places for the April course - sign up in the school office now!
