You’ve got to choose!!

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Today we had our school nurse talk to us in assembly about healthy eating and the good food choices we have to make. Its all about choice, choice at the supermarket, choice when out at the cinema or in a restaurant, the choice to be healthy. Our bodies need a balanced diet and we need vitamins to stay healthy. Come on FBCS kids - let’s make healthy choices and feel great!

What will you choose? Click here for the video we watched.

Rollathon a huge success!!

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

Thank you to all who participated and raised money to help this years rollathon be a huge success.

We had almost all FBCS participate and a lot of WEE Care children too! It was great to see everyone scooting, skating, triking, boarding and biking endless laps of the car park for 3 hours solid. I received some wonderful feedback from parents and the children did great. Lots of exercise + fun = healthy happy kids! Together both circuits blasted last years lap count of 2500 laps.

This year we raised over $2745 which will go towards new equipment for the PE department. Jade Robinson won our biggest sponsorship collection and recieved a gift certificate raising $502 and Bruce Murdoch raised the most from WEE Care - $108.  Our students together completed 3885 laps!!! Way to go FBCS and WEE Care!

Sailing Club is SUPER!!

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

Once again FBCS students have had a great time at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club. This is one of the best places in the world to learn to sail. The club offers fully qualified instructors, all students are required to wear lifejackets and a safety boat is with them at all times.

This is a fantastic learn to sail course for ages 5-12 and we have a new session starting Monday April 12th running for 6 weeks til May 28th. We provide transport to the sailing club and ask parents to pick up at 5:30pm from the sailing club.

Bookings now being taken for places for the April course - sign up in the school office now!

Legends Tennis

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

FBCS students in Grades 4, 5 & 6 will get to experience a professional tennis match tomorrow at the Ritz Carlton. The KPMG Legends Tennis Tournament has stars such as Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis and Mark Philippoussis playing and the former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is a guest spectator.

For me as an avid Wimbledon fan I’m very exited to be going! Schools were generously given complimentary tickets to help get school children excited about this wonderful game.  More information can be found at www.compasscayman.com/tennis/

Wellness Policy Update/Project Grow

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

The Wellness Policy was introduced in January 2011. It was handed out to all parents (if you didn’t get a copy please visit the school office)  and has been formulated to improve the health and wellness of all students at FBCS and WEE Care.

This is an exciting time! Here are some things we have done -

Implemented Fruity Friday (to replace the bake sale) each Friday afternoon to provide students with a much needed healthy snack whilst raising funds for PTF.

With funding from PTF we have painted new playground markings to encourage more physical activity at lunch and recess.

We are encouraging children to drink more water with signs up at the water fountains and asking them to bring water bottles to school.

Provided healthy snacks at events such as the Swim gala and class trips.

Helped with the decision to have hats as part of the school uniform.

FBCS is the first Private School to comply with new government standards for the food we supply to students through Food for Thought.

AND JUST LAST WEEK - with the help of the Be Active team and Project Grow we have our very own school garden. There are 2 new planting beds for our children to plant, care for, grow and hopefully eat the various plants and learn about healthy food that grows in the ground and not manufactured. Cayman 27 came and captured our first seeds being planted! Click here for news report.

A BIG thank you to all parents who send in healthy snacks and lunches for their children. As a parent I know it can take a little more time and preparation to cut up fruit or make a sandwich but not only does this have such great health benefits and forms eating habits that will last a life time but it also can help improve concentration and academic performance.

Here are some helpful ideas on healthy-packed-lunches from Bethany Smith our Nutrition expert.

Kids and exercise.

Sunday, August 28th, 2011

Welcome back to a brand new school year! Hoping everyone had an active summer and had lots of fun. This is a great article on Kids and Exercise from kidshealth.org. I’m excited and privileged to be leading FBCS students and reading an article like this gets me ready and raring to go…I hope you and your kids are too :)

Enjoy the article -

When most adults think about exercise, they imagine working out in the gym on a treadmill or lifting weights.

But for kids, exercise means playing and being physically active. Kids exercise when they have gym class at school, soccer practice, or dance class. They’re also exercising when they’re at recess, riding bikes, or playing tag.

The Many Benefits of Exercise

Everyone can benefit from regular exercise. Kids who are active will:

Besides enjoying the health benefits of regular exercise, kids who are physically fit sleep better and are better able to handle physical and emotional challenges — from running to catch a bus to studying for a test.

The Three Elements of Fitness

If you’ve ever watched kids on a playground, you’ve seen the three elements of fitness in action when they:

  1. run away from the kid who’s “it” (endurance)
  2. cross the monkey bars (strength)
  3. bend down to tie their shoes (flexibility)

Parents should encourage their kids to do a variety of activities so that they can work on all three elements.

Endurance is developed when kids regularly engage in aerobic activity. During aerobic exercise, the heart beats faster and a person breathes harder. When done regularly and for continuous periods of time, aerobic activity strengthens the heart and improves the body’s ability to deliver oxygen to all its cells.

Aerobic exercise can be fun for both adults and kids. Examples of aerobic activities include:

  • basketball
  • bicycling
  • ice-skating
  • inline skating
  • soccer
  • swimming
  • tennis
  • walking
  • jogging
  • running

Improving strength doesn’t have to mean lifting weights. Although some kids benefit from weightlifting, it should be done under the supervision of an experienced adult who works with them.

But most kids don’t need a formal weight-training program to be strong. Push-ups, stomach crunches, pull-ups, and other exercises help tone and strengthen muscles. Kids also incorporate strength activities in their play when they climb, do a handstand, or wrestle.

Stretching exercises help improve flexibility, allowing muscles and joints to bend and move easily through their full range of motion. Kids look for opportunities every day to stretch when they try to get a toy just out of reach, practice a split, or do a cartwheel.

The Sedentary Problem

The percentage of overweight and obese kids and teens has more than doubled over the past 30 years. Although many factors contribute to this epidemic, children are becoming more sedentary. In other words, they’re sitting around a lot more than they used to.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the average child is watching about 3 hours of television a day. And the average kid spends 5½ hours on all screen media combined (TV, videos and DVDs, computer time outside of schoolwork, and video games).

One of the best ways to get kids to be more active is to limit the amount of time spent in sedentary activities, especially watching TV or playing video games. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children under the age of 2 years watch no TV at all and that screen time should be limited to no more than 1-2 hours of quality programming a day for kids 2 years and older.

How Much Exercise Is Enough?

Parents need to ensure that their kids get enough exercise. So, how much is enough? All kids 2 years and older should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise on most, preferably all, days of the week.

The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) offers expanded activity guidelines for infants, toddlers and preschoolers:

Age Minimum Daily Activity Comments
Infant No specific requirements Physical activity should encourage motor development
Toddler 1½ hours 30 minutes planned physical activity AND 60 minutes unstructured physical activity (free play)
Preschooler 2 hours 60 minutes planned physical activity AND 60 minutes unstructured physical activity (free play)
School age 1 hour or more Break up into bouts of 15 minutes or more

Infants and young children should not be inactive for prolonged periods of time — no more than 1 hour unless they’re sleeping. And school-age children should not be inactive for periods longer than 2 hours.

Raising a Fit Kid

Combining regular physical activity with a healthy diet is the key to a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some tips for raising fit kids:

  • Help your child participate in a variety of activities that are age-appropriate.
  • Establish a regular schedule for physical activity.
  • Incorporate activity into daily routines, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Embrace a healthier lifestyle yourself, so you’ll be a positive role model for your family.
  • Keep it fun, so you can count on your child to come back for more.
