Accountability:

The FBCS Annual Attendance rate is 96% which is very good!  Help us keep this up by bringing your students on time, and scheduling trips during breaks when possible.

Reminders:

Please give to the “Worthy Servants” offering that is being taken to encourage our teachers with a small Christmas bonus. These gifts can be given at either office or during the offering time at the Christmas concert.

Special Announcement:

Mr. Ricky has announced his “retirement” from FBCS.  He is going to pursue his passion for music once again. Many of you may know that Ricky did well as a recording artist and writer, known as RikRok. We so appreciate his time and ministry with us in the main school office. Ricky will be missed by all.  Please stop by and let him how much you appreciate him.  His last day will be Wednesday, December 18th.

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Merry Christmas! There are so many wonderful pictures of Christmas recorded for us in the Gospel accounts. My personal favorite is the story of the prophet Simeon.  We are told that he was “righteous” and “devout” and that he was “eagerly waiting” for the Messiah.  The LORD had revealed to him that he wouldn’t die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.  So there he was performing his duties in the Temple when Joseph and Mary arrived with the baby Jesus. Can you just imagine the joy he experienced as he took the baby Jesus into his arms? He testified to the fact that our God is a promise keeper.  He proclaimed that Jesus was the “light” to reveal God to the nations and that he was the “glory” of Israel…the one who was salvation, prepared for all people.

Like Simeon, we wait for the coming of Christ. Let us be people who are known for being righteous, devout, and eagerly waiting the second coming of the Messiah.  “Even so, come Lord Jesus, come.” Revelation 22:20b

Physical Education

The kindergarten through 2nd grade classes have started the second quarter with a Manipulatives unit.  The students used scarves, beanbags, hoops, ribbons, and various sized balls to complete numerous activities, such as balancing, dancing, rolling, tossing, and catching.  Through these activities, the students acquired and improved basic skills which will be applied to many sports.  Next, we will be moving into our Balance, Stunts, and Tumbling unit.  The activities in this unit are designed to increase the students’ balance, coordination, flexibility, agility and strength.  Finally, the students will be completing a Track and Field unit.  They will practice events, such as shot put, long jump, and track races, which will prepare them for our Sport Day competitions at the end of January.

The 3rd – 6th grade classes started the second quarter with their fitness testing (curl-ups, push-ups, and pacer test).  They were able to compare their results with their first quarter outcomes and reassess their goals.  Next the students began their Basketball unit.  They learned the basic skills of the sport, such as dribbling, passing, and shooting, through activities that include and challenge all students’ physical skills.  Next, they will be completing a Jump Rope unit.  Here they will be learning numerous individual and partner tricks, which they will use to incorporate into a routine they design themselves.  Finally, the students will be completing a Track and Field unit.  They will practice events, such as shot put, long jump, and varying distance races, which will prepare them for our Sport Day competitions at the end of January.

Technology

K: We will be working on developing our range of mouse skills such as holding the mouse correctly, clicking and clicking and dragging through a variety of educational games and creative applications. We will also be working on familiarizing ourselves with the letters on the keyboard by doing basic typing activities in Typing Pal and typing games.

Grade 1:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow. This slideshow will develop skills such as: finding images online and copy and pasting images into a document. We will then focus on moving and resizing the images. They will also be learning how to log off their computers independently.

Coding and Robotics: using Scrat from the Ice Age franchise, students will develop sequential algorithms to move a squirrel character from one side of a maze to the acorn at the other side. To do this, they will stack code blocks together in a linear sequence.

Grade 2:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow. This slideshow will develop skills such as: finding images online and copy and pasting images into a document. We will then focus on moving and resizing the images.

Coding and Robotics: students will be practicing their programming skills using a new character, Laurel the Adventurer. Through the use of programming, students will develop an understanding of how a computer navigates instructions and order.

Grade 3:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow. This slideshow will develop skills such as: finding images online and copy and pasting images into a document and adding text to the slides. We will then focus on moving and resizing the images and changing the font, size and color of the text.

Coding and Robotics: students will learn what events are, and how computers use them in programs like video games. Students will work through puzzles making the program react to events (like arrow buttons being pressed).

Grade 4:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow which describes one way in which we can help make the planet a healthier place to live. This slideshow will develop skills such as: researching their topic thoroughly online and finding new and interesting information, displaying this information in a captivating manner which involves images and adding animation to the slides and objects on the slides to enhance the slideshow.

Coding and Robotics: students will make their own gorgeous designs using a small number of blocks and digital stickers. They will build on the understanding of loops from previous lessons and get a chance to be truly creative.

Grade 5:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow which describes one way in which we can help make the planet a healthier place to live. This slideshow will develop skills such as: researching their topic thoroughly online and finding new and interesting information, displaying this information in a captivating manner which involves images and adding animation to the slides and objects on the slides to enhance the slideshow.

Coding and Robotics: students will be introduced to the core vocabulary of Sprite Lab and apply concepts they learned in other environments to this tool. By creating a fish tank, students will begin to form an understanding of the programming model of this tool, and explore ways they can use it to express themselves.

Grade 6:
PowerPoint: the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow which describes one way in which we can help make the planet a healthier place to live. This slideshow will develop skills such as: researching their topic thoroughly online and finding new and interesting information, displaying this information in a captivating manner which involves images and adding animation to the slides and objects on the slides to enhance the slideshow.

Coding and Robotics: this term the students will use events to make characters move around the screen, make noises and change backgrounds based on user input. This will be an introduction to events and a wonderful opportunity to be creative as they immerse themselves in an Alien Dance Party.

On our FBCS Quarterly Report Cards students are assessed on their progress towards learning skills, behavior, and effort.   Teachers use rubrics to determine a child’s placement in these areas.
