Mr. Ricky has announced his “retirement” from FBCS.  He is going to pursue his passion for music once again. Many of you may know that Ricky did well as a recording artist and writer, known as RikRok. We so appreciate his time and ministry with us in the main school office. Ricky will be missed by all.  Please stop by and let him how much you appreciate him.  His last day will be Wednesday, December 18th.

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Merry Christmas! There are so many wonderful pictures of Christmas recorded for us in the Gospel accounts. My personal favorite is the story of the prophet Simeon.  We are told that he was “righteous” and “devout” and that he was “eagerly waiting” for the Messiah.  The LORD had revealed to him that he wouldn’t die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.  So there he was performing his duties in the Temple when Joseph and Mary arrived with the baby Jesus. Can you just imagine the joy he experienced as he took the baby Jesus into his arms? He testified to the fact that our God is a promise keeper.  He proclaimed that Jesus was the “light” to reveal God to the nations and that he was the “glory” of Israel…the one who was salvation, prepared for all people.

Like Simeon, we wait for the coming of Christ. Let us be people who are known for being righteous, devout, and eagerly waiting the second coming of the Messiah.  “Even so, come Lord Jesus, come.” Revelation 22:20b

Physical Education

The kindergarten through 2nd grade classes have started the second quarter with a Manipulatives unit.  The students used scarves, beanbags, hoops, ribbons, and various sized balls to complete numerous activities, such as balancing, dancing, rolling, tossing, and catching.  Through these activities, the students acquired and improved basic skills which will be applied to many sports.  Next, we will be moving into our Balance, Stunts, and Tumbling unit.  The activities in this unit are designed to increase the students’ balance, coordination, flexibility, agility and strength.  Finally, the students will be completing a Track and Field unit.  They will practice events, such as shot put, long jump, and track races, which will prepare them for our Sport Day competitions at the end of January.

The 3rd – 6th grade classes started the second quarter with their fitness testing (curl-ups, push-ups, and pacer test).  They were able to compare their results with their first quarter outcomes and reassess their goals.  Next the students began their Basketball unit.  They learned the basic skills of the sport, such as dribbling, passing, and shooting, through activities that include and challenge all students’ physical skills.  Next, they will be completing a Jump Rope unit.  Here they will be learning numerous individual and partner tricks, which they will use to incorporate into a routine they design themselves.  Finally, the students will be completing a Track and Field unit.  They will practice events, such as shot put, long jump, and varying distance races, which will prepare them for our Sport Day competitions at the end of January.

Technology

K: We will be working on developing our range of mouse skills such as holding the mouse correctly, clicking and clicking and dragging through a variety of educational games and creative applications. We will also be working on familiarizing ourselves with the letters on the keyboard by doing basic typing activities in Typing Pal and typing games.

Grade 1:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow. This slideshow will develop skills such as: finding images online and copy and pasting images into a document. We will then focus on moving and resizing the images. They will also be learning how to log off their computers independently.

Coding and Robotics: using Scrat from the Ice Age franchise, students will develop sequential algorithms to move a squirrel character from one side of a maze to the acorn at the other side. To do this, they will stack code blocks together in a linear sequence.

Grade 2:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow. This slideshow will develop skills such as: finding images online and copy and pasting images into a document. We will then focus on moving and resizing the images.

Coding and Robotics: students will be practicing their programming skills using a new character, Laurel the Adventurer. Through the use of programming, students will develop an understanding of how a computer navigates instructions and order.

Grade 3:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow. This slideshow will develop skills such as: finding images online and copy and pasting images into a document and adding text to the slides. We will then focus on moving and resizing the images and changing the font, size and color of the text.

Coding and Robotics: students will learn what events are, and how computers use them in programs like video games. Students will work through puzzles making the program react to events (like arrow buttons being pressed).

Grade 4:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow which describes one way in which we can help make the planet a healthier place to live. This slideshow will develop skills such as: researching their topic thoroughly online and finding new and interesting information, displaying this information in a captivating manner which involves images and adding animation to the slides and objects on the slides to enhance the slideshow.

Coding and Robotics: students will make their own gorgeous designs using a small number of blocks and digital stickers. They will build on the understanding of loops from previous lessons and get a chance to be truly creative.

Grade 5:
PowerPoint: this term, the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow which describes one way in which we can help make the planet a healthier place to live. This slideshow will develop skills such as: researching their topic thoroughly online and finding new and interesting information, displaying this information in a captivating manner which involves images and adding animation to the slides and objects on the slides to enhance the slideshow.

Coding and Robotics: students will be introduced to the core vocabulary of Sprite Lab and apply concepts they learned in other environments to this tool. By creating a fish tank, students will begin to form an understanding of the programming model of this tool, and explore ways they can use it to express themselves.

Grade 6:
PowerPoint: the students will be working on creating a PowerPoint slideshow which describes one way in which we can help make the planet a healthier place to live. Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Galatians 4:4 “In the fullness of time, God sent forth his Son…” Christmas is upon us. We celebrate in many ways and with diverse international customs. However, as the centerpiece of Christmas, we have Christ. Christ is the only appropriate focus of what we celebrate. The prophets spoke plainly that “a child would be born, a son would be given.” (Isaiah. 9) They told us what he would be called, “Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, Emmanuel.” (Isaiah 7 & 9) They even told us where he would be born – “But you, O Bethlehem….” (Micah 5:2) Best of all, we understand why he was born. Paul tells us that he came to “buy freedom for those of us who were slaves to the law.” (Galatians 4:5). John tells us that he came “to give us a rich and satisfying life.” (John 10:10b)  Christmastime is here. In all that we do and say, let’s keep Christ the centerpiece of our Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone!

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Christmas is my favorite time of year. I love the music of Christmas. I love the lights, the decorations, the excitement of giving and receiving, and the food.  Did I mention the food? Ahh, but the best thing about Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the most wonderful gift that was ever given.

Sometimes, we get so incredibly busy during this season that we can lose the preciousness of it if we are not careful. With all that takes place, take time to reflect on: “Emmanuel, God with us”; “Peace on earth, good will to men”; “good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people.” Celebrate the season of joy.  It really is miraculous.

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Many years ago, I read a book entitled, “Encouragement, the Key to Caring.” It was just a short expression of a Biblical concept that is to be practiced within the Body of Christ. Encouragement. There are so many verses that address the use of the tongue. Proverbs 15:1 states that “a gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare.” Proverbs 15:4 says, “Gentle words are a tree of life.” Proverbs 18:20 says, “wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction.” Proverbs 13:3 says, “Those who control their tongue will have a long life.”

My point today is that a little encouragement goes a long way. A simple positive word can make a person’s day. A purposed smile can lighten the load some may be carrying. Look around you, there is no shortage of people who are weighed down with the cares of this life. Many just need to come to the Lord. But even Christians need to be greeted with a smile, a word of encouragement, and handled with gentleness.

Be “that” person today. The one who has a smile on their face…the one that greets people that cross their path…the one that sheds light into darkness…be an encourager today.

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Remembrance Day…..

Monday, we stop and take a day off of work, school, etc. and most of us will just enjoy the nice little extra day that we so desperately need at this time of the year. But in so doing, let’s not forget why we have the day set aside. It’s all about remembering those who have served in various wars and hostilities around the world so that we could enjoy the blessings of liberty and freedom.

You can take this one step further and remember the One who paid the ultimate sacrifice of his innocent life so that we might be set free from the bondage of sin. Every time we partake of the Lord’s Supper, we “do this in remembrance of me.”  So once again, let’s keep our focus this Monday.

While we may be engaged in many various activities, let’s purpose to honor those who have served and even laid down their life. Honor, remembrance, and thankfulness should adorn our lives.

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

November, traditionally, is the month that many celebrate Thanksgiving. Whether you have a national tradition that singles this day out or not, it is a spirit that is worth cultivating in our lives. We have SO MUCH for which to be thankful. Even when we have burdens on our heart, the Apostle Paul tells us to bring them before the Lord with thanksgiving(Phil. 4:6-7).

Remember the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17?  After experiencing a miracle of healing, one of the ten returned and thanked the Lord for his healing. Jesus asked, “Didn’t I heal ten men? Where are the other nine?” Let’s be the ONE, not the nine.

Let’s practice this with one another as well.  There are so many ways to say “thanks.”  You can say it, write it, tell someone else about someone for whom you’re thankful. You can call them, text them, send them an email, or bake them something they love (chocolate, for example J). I’m thankful for all our wonderful and supportive parents.  May you have a blessed Thanksgiving!

Stay tuned for information on an upcoming “Parent Chat” with the Head of School in the month of November.

Literacy Announcement Ms. Suckoo:

Since Global Read Aloud (GRA) kicked off last week, classes across FBCS have been busy making global connections with classrooms around the world. From a Mystery Skype in Wisconsin, to a Google Hangout in Ontario, from Padlet to FlipGrid, students have been utilizing technology across the board to learn about others and discuss our literary adventures.

Imagine, this is only Week 2 of GRA…now picture what more we have in store!

Parents, remember to stay up to date with the books that we are reading by asking questions and discussing what we’ve read with your child/children. To get you and your little humans thinking, try a few of these starter questions based off of Bloom’s Taxonomy:

– What do you think will happen next?

– What would result if…?

– Explain why the character acted in the way that he/she did.

– Do you know another instance where…?

– Which factors would you change if…?

– What is the main idea? Theme?

– What are the consequences of…?

– What influence will …have on our lives?

– How would you feel if…?

– What changes to the book would you recommend?

Then of course we have our: Who? What? Where? When? How?  What happened after?

Looking forward to an adventurous next few weeks.

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Thank you to all of you that attended our special “Education Sunday” last weekend. We had a wonderful group of parents present to worship with us. The students did a great job ministering through songs.

I also want to thank you for your understanding of our professional development days that were added to the master school calendar shortly after my arrival on the island back in late June. These days allow us to further challenge our teachers in the art of their teaching craft. It is a win-win for all of us. Teachers that are improving in their craft produce students that are improving in their education as observed by their assessments. I am aware that this creates a potential hardship for you as parents providing coverage for your children on these early dismissal days. Thank you for your extra efforts to make this work. This is essential for the growth and development of our staff.

Literacy Announcement Ms. Suckoo:

Global Read Aloud (GRA) 2019 kicked off with a bang this week at FBCS. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 are all participating this year as we join in this global literacy initiative.

In Kindergarten and Grade 1, students will be studying various picture books each week, while our Grade 2’s – 6’s will be busying delving into chapter books.

During GRA, not only will our learners be immersing themselves in the written word, but they’ll also be making global connections by meeting up with classes around the world  to discuss each book. “Global collaboration is necessary to show students that they are part of something bigger than them. That the world needs to be protected and that we need to care for all people. You can show them pictures of kids in other countries but why not have them speak to each other? Then the caring can begin.” https://theglobalreadaloud.com

Parents, be sure to ask your child about the books that they’re studying and reading each day, or log on to the link below and read along with us. We’re in for an exciting few weeks.

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

Every year at about this time, our church celebrates our Christian School ministry with a special Sunday called, “Education Sunday”. It is a wonderful time of worship and fellowship for our church and school families as we come together and celebrate what the Lord is doing through our Christian School ministry. I certainly hope that you can be with us THIS SUNDAY morning at 10:30am for this special service.

I’m looking forward to seeing all of our wonderful students sing for the congregation.  They sound so great in practice! Following the service, please stay for our special potluck luncheon where YOU and your family are our special guests!  You don’t have to bring anything except a hearty appetite and a fun spirit.  See you Sunday!

Message from Mr. Holtzhouse (Head of School)

We had a fabulous chapel from Mr. Bremner on Monday as he taught the children about Daniel in the Lion’s Den.  We learned about Daniel’s trust in the Lord in spite of what seemed like an impossible situation.  Children are leaning to listen and obey, do all that the Lord asks of them and then to trust him for the hard things that belong only to him. These are lessons all of us need to learn.  Thank you Mr. Bremner for opening God’s word to us in Chapel.  Next week, our guest speaker will be dealing with the story about Daniel’s three friends, Shadrack, Meshack, and Abednego.  Chapel begins at 8:10am.  Come and join us for this wonderful time of instruction.
