“Center” the learning

Centers are an integral part of the Kindergarten classroom. It is within centers that we give the kids an opportunity to practice their skills.

This week our Math focus was on counting sets of numbers reliably.

After short lessons on the rug, the kids then set off to tackle various tasks on their own. Take a look.

Ok! Lets write down what we know.

Dinosaur Day!

To wrap up our study of dinosaurs, Kindergarten enjoyed a day of prehistoric fun and games! Students were divided into teams and given dinosaur names, then competed in games such as “Pin the plates on Steggy” and “Feed the T-rex”

We enjoyed dino snacks such as dinosaur scales (potato chips), dino bones (pretzel sticks), herbivore food (fruit platter), carnivore food (sausages), and swamp juice (fruit punch)

The highlight of the morning was an all-out dinosaur hunt where our junior paleontologists dug up dinosaurs and bones from the sand pit. Some of the dinos didn’t want to go extinct, and were still hanging around above ground.

At the end we tallied all the points to see which team won! The yellow Pteradactyls led the competition, but it was a close game, and everyone had tons of fun :).

After lunch we watched “The Good Dinosaur” and enjoyed a beautiful (and delicious!) cake made by one of our students!

Overall the day was a ROARING success!

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Caribbean kids never get a snow day from school. In Kindergarten we’ve been reading books about snow this week, so we thought we would bring the snow day TO school!

Shaving cream+Corn starch makes a marvelously messy, soft, fluffy “snow” that we were able to make into snowballs, snowmen, and snowy mountains. Our classroom floor looked like it had snowed inside afterwards, but thankfully it sweeps up easily! 😉

Shaping up in Kindergarten!

Last month our Math focus in Kindergarten was shapes and patterns. We explored both 2-d (flat) shapes and 3-d (solid) shapes, practiced counting sides, corners, and flat faces, and identified real-world objects that are each shape. Below are some shapes and patterns Kindergarten B found around the school.

Super Spellers!

As you know, we are into the third term now, and summer is fast approaching! In order to help students prepare for First Grade in the Fall, we are going to begin having a weekly spelling test.
Your child has a small booklet in their backpack where I will paste their word list and then the completed spelling test. Please help your child practice spelling the words several times during the week to prepare for tests on Wednesdays. You may practice in the booklet if you like.
Some ideas for practicing spelling words and keeping it fun:
Rainbow Write – write your words with one color, then trace over with another color and a third so your words look like rainbows
Window Write – write your words with a dry-erase marker on glass surfaces in your home (windows, mirrors, etc.)
Sentence Write – write a sentence for each spelling word, or see how many spelling words you can get into one sentence!
Typing – type your words on the computer using different fonts and colors. Email them to Mrs. White so she can see your fancy words!
Online – go to https://www.spellingcity.com/FBCSKinder/ to find your spelling list and activities you can do to practice. If you are not sure which list is yours, ask Mrs. White.
Outside – write on the sidewalk with chalk, in the sand with a stick, or use objects like rocks, shells, sticks, etc. to make your words.

Under the sea- An above the water exploration of the ocean

Ok fact number 1- We live on an island.

Fact number 2- We have lots of sea creatures that are totally interesting and fascinating.

This month we studied all that the sea has to offer and show us.

We learnt about relationships between animals in the sea. We learnt about different kinds of animals- fish, reptiles, mammals that all call the sea their home.

So naturally at the culmination of the trip, we get to touch and feel some of these things.

Have a look at our field trips to Turtle Farm Wildlife Encounter AND Dolphin Discovery Water park. Both establishments had highly trained well polished professionals that made us learn even when we played.

Kinder Worship!

Mrs. Galvoa, our Aide loves worship time and often leads worship in Chapel. At the request of many of the kinders, they joined her in our last chapel to help bolster the rafters. Take a look.

Christmas Play-dough Fun

Here in Kindergarten, we usually alternate weeks between show and tell and cooking. This week, we “cooked” something a little different – play dough!

All it takes is 2 Cups of flour

kindergarten 014

1 Cup of salt

kindergarten 013

1 Cup of water

and a Dash of oil

and we added a secret ingredient…..glitter!

kindergarten 015

Then you just mix it up!

and enjoy! Play dough is great for building fine motor skills, and helps develop the muscles needed to write and draw neatly. It’s also loads of fun! Look at some of the creative things we made:

Ready for Reading!

Parents, your child should have come home with an envelope last Friday containing a book and a reading log. I am hoping that each child will make a habit of spending 20 minutes every day reading. These folders should be returned on Thursdays so a new book can be sent home each Friday.

20 minutes may seem daunting, but never fear! It does not have to be all at once, and it does not have to be only your child reading to you. In fact, children learn many skills that will help them learn to read better just by listening to you read to them.

Kindergarten 020

The 20 minutes also does not have to be only the book sent from school. Your child should be able to read this book to you at least once during the week, but they do not have to read it every day. Please let me know if a book I send seems way too hard or easy for your child. We Give Books is a nice website to read books online with a free sign-up. They have many different levels of books as well.

Please do not feel like you must log every single book or every single minute exactly. The reading log is as much for YOU as it is for me. The important thing is that your child is making it a habit to spend time reading and enjoying books every day, not that something is written in the reading log.

Reading Rockets has some good tips for building language skills at home as well. If you would like any additional tips or ideas for helping your child at home, just ask!
