Grade 5

The grade 5 class are working hard to complete their portfolio for the Disney Environmental Project.

Here are some of the learning objectives this project has met -

The First Baptist Christian School objectives met during this project

include the following –

Language –

·         Read to acquire information.

·         Express thoughts and ideas in written form, applying the rules of spelling and grammar appropriate to Grade 5.

·         Produce pieces of writing using a variety of forms - e.g. reports and newspaper articles.

Oral and Visual Communication –

·         Ask and answer questions on a variety of topics to acquire and clarify information.

·         Work cooperatively with other students in partners and groups.

Science –

·         Explain how people’s actions can affect the environment.

·         Describe ways to protect the environment.

·         Evaluate the reasons for conserving natural resources.

Visual Arts –

·         To acquire manipulative skills in the effective use of a variety of materials, techniques and artistic procedures.

Friday 13th Jan the Grade 5 class enjoyed a Social Studies lesson at the beautiful Smith Cove. We were learning about our beaches, the different types of rock and why it is important to protect the coastline.

After the lesson we did a beach clean up, to play our part in protecting the natual environment.

The Science Fair is on Friday 20th January - 1pm until 2.30pm.

All students are to complete their projects and have them ready to display.

Bible Memory Verse -

Grade 5 will have their class Christmas Party on Tuesday 13th December - 12 - 2.30pm.

The students have a note in their bags explaining what to bring. They wanted to do Secret Santa , and in the spirit of giving we are going to buy and donate a gift too.

TODAY IS OUR CHRISTMAS CONCERT. Please have your child meet in the balcony between 6 and 6.15pm.

Dear Parents,

We have had a busy week in Grade 5 rehearsing for the Christmas Concert, completing a ‘data’ mid chapter check in Math, reading a non-fiction narrative about Leonardo DaVinci, learning about fossils and continuing on with our environmental project.

Please ask your child the following questions -

1. What is a ‘non-fiction narrative’ and what did you learn about Leonardo DaVinci’s horse statue?

2.  How do you choose an appropriate scale for a frequency table?

3. What did Achan do ? (hide his sin) What can we learn from this?

Next week the student’s will receive a letter about the class christmas party on Tuesday 13th Dec.

Dear Parents

Please remember the field trip on Monday 28th Nov, students will need water, sunscreen and their hat.

Friday 2nd December is the school Christmas concert at 6.30pm. The boys have taken home their Indian outfits ( Thankyou Allan’s Mum !! ), and the girls are going to bring in their tops on Monday.

Please ask your child the following questions -

1. Ask them to show you their Indian dance.

2. What is range, mode, median and outlier ?

3. What is an example of a direct object ?

Dear Parents,

It is a busy time in Grade 5. We have started a new grading period, this includes new units in English, Math and Science. The Grade 5 class are starting rehearsals for the christmas concert on 2nd December. We are also concentrating on our environmental project - Recycle Rangers !

Could you please help us with the following-

Start a recycle box at home, with containers you can reuse and any papers or newspapers.

Find a costume suitable for the Christmas Concert - our country is India. See me for suggestions.

Questions for the week -

1. How did Joshua and Caleb -stand alone ?

2. Ask your student to read you their creative writing and let them know what you think of their story.

3. What did you learn during the National Trust presentation on trees ? Which tree are you writing about ?

The students enjoyed planting Silver Thatch and Mahogany seeds as part of our environmental project.

Please sign up for a report card conference time, with your child, on Wednesday or Thursday (16th or 17th).

Students are to work on their recycyle research projects.

Students are rehearsing for the christmas concert on Dec 2nd, please help them find an indian style outfit to wear. See me for ideas.
