Global Citizenship - Colombia

The Grade 5 class have started a class project on Global Citizenship and a study of the country - Colombia.

The students will be exploring the following questions together -

What does it mean to be a Global Citizen ?

How are you the same and different from children in Colombia, and around the world ?

What are the rights and responsibilities of being a citizen of the world ?

What customs and traditions do families have ?

How can we show God’s love to people in Colombia ?

Each student will also research their own project on facts about Colombia including information on transport, government, food, schools, language, culture.

The FBCS Global Awareness week is 5th - 8th June.

Disney Planet Challenge Presentation

Today the Grade 5 class enjoyed a presentation about the Wetlands. This was presented by Ms Dianne from the Dept of Tourism and two students from the Triple C class that won the Disney Planet Challenge.  

Ms Dianne also informed the class that the judges were impressed with their project on Recycling that took 3rd place.

Field Trip - ‘Living Green Fair’

The Grade 5 class will be going on a field trip on Friday 20th April to the Governor’s Garden for the ‘Living Green Fair’. Transport will be provided by the Dept of Tourism. The class has been invited to this event because they came 3rd place in the Disney Project Challenge. We will leave school at 11am and return at 1.30pm. 

The event is open to the public so any parents are welcome to join us there.

Reading Week 2012

Grade 5 enjoyed dressing up as a nursery rhyme character and going to recite their rhymes to the P3 class.

The Grade 5’s read for 25 minutes silently during the FBCS Read-a-thon, to raise funds for the new christian book section for the library.

Tourism Social Studies Project

Tourism Project – Grade 5 Social Studies

There are three parts to this project –

1.      Design and draw a poster which promotes the Cayman Islands and encourages more tourists to visit the islands.

2.      Research and then write an information booklet on the Department of Tourism, explaining its function and the methods it uses to promote tourism.

3.      Choose one business in Cayman that is part of the tourist industry. Interview the manager/ owner or an employee and find out more about what that business does. Write a one or two page case study of this business and include photographs, drawings or a brochure to illustrate the case study.

 

This project is due Monday 19th March. Have fun!

The grade 5 class are working hard to complete their portfolio for the Disney Environmental Project.

Here are some of the learning objectives this project has met -

include the following –

 

Language –

·         Read to acquire information.

·         Express thoughts and ideas in written form, applying the rules of spelling and grammar appropriate to Grade 5.

·         Produce pieces of writing using a variety of forms - e.g. reports and newspaper articles.

Oral and Visual Communication –

·         Ask and answer questions on a variety of topics to acquire and clarify information.

·         Work cooperatively with other students in partners and groups.

Science –

·         Explain how people’s actions can affect the environment.

·         Describe ways to protect the environment.

·         Evaluate the reasons for conserving natural resources.

Visual Arts –

·         To acquire manipulative skills in the effective use of a variety of materials, techniques and artistic procedures.

Social Studies lesson / Beach Clean Up

Friday 13th Jan the Grade 5 class enjoyed a Social Studies lesson at the beautiful Smith Cove. We were learning about our beaches, the different types of rock and why it is important to protect the coastline.

After the lesson we did a beach clean up, to play our part in protecting the natual environment.
