Update – October 26-30th.

This week in Grade Two.

Literacy:

Grammar– we completed the topic of ‘Types of Sentences’ this week. Sentences is a continuous practice, as, in all areas students must write in complete sentences. Next week students will start learning about ‘Nouns’.

Phonics – This week we focused on the long vowels ‘a’ and ‘i’. Next week our focus will be on long vowels o, u, e.

Comprehension – Students are learning to think through the text. Taking a closer look at the story or non-fictional information and understanding what is being written about.

Writing – This week we completed the type of writing; “Expository Writing”. Next week students will be learning about Narrative Writing.

Oral Communication – Students are learning how to verbally make presentations through oral book summary. On Mondays students will orally summarize their library books or a book of their choice. They will tell the name of the author, the title of the book, the main characters, their favourite part of the book and why. Books should be read prior to Monday’s class. Please see rubric, showing what an oral book summary entails. This rubric will be used to grade students as well. You will be notified when an oral presentation will be graded. Numeracy – This week we completed the topic 100 less and 100 more. Next week students will start learning about ‘comparing and ordering whole numbers between 0-999.’

Science – we continue to look at forces. This week we completed the topic of gravity and started the topic of magnetism. Next week will continue to explore the topic of magnetism.

Social Studies – Students continue to learn about ‘The Cayman Islands as part of the world. At the end of this topic students will be able to locate; the Continents, the Caribbean and The Cayman Islands within the Caribbean on a map.

Bible – students continue to learn about Moses and his family. Next week we will explore Moses receiving the ten commandments.

Updates – October 7-9

In all things God is faithful. He is good and his mercies endure forever.

Library – students missed their library time which is scheduled for Mondays. Unfortunately there was no other available time for students to return and borrow library books. Please remind your child to pack their library books on Monday so it may be returned on Monday and they may receive one in turn.

If your child has outstanding library books from Grade one please remember to have them return to the librarian so she may update her system.

In your child’s folder you will find:

  • Vocabulary words to practice for their spelling test on Friday, October 16th.
  • Homework to be returned on Friday, October 16th

Reminders:

  • Social studies project is due on October 16th. I will keep you posted if there are any changes to our school guidelines keeping in line with Government requirements, where the food aspect is concerned.
  • Terra nova – Exams continue Monday and Tuesday next week.
  • Open house is cancelled.
  • Friday, October 16th is dress down day. Please be reminded students are not allowed to wear short shorts and opened toe shoes, please see handbook for other guidelines.

Sept. 28 – Oct. 2, 2020

Update:

This week we spent preparing for next week testing.

We spent time reviewing letter sounds of short and long vowels, by breaking our CVC words apart and finding their similar sounds.

We spent time going through comprehension questions.

Refreshing what students already know by using number lines, addition and subtraction in working with 10 less and 10 more.

Carrying out Terra Nova practice tests.

Social Studies Project due October 16th. Project 1

Terra Nova:

Test days are October 5 – 9, 2020. Teacher will be reading the questions and options to students. Please send 2 number 2 hb pencils with your child.

There is no homework nor spelling words this week, so students can focus completely on Terra Nova.

Tips:

  • Students should go to bed on time
  • Get ample rest
  • Stay hydrated
  • Receive calming words
  • Eat a healthy breakfast

 

September 21-25 Update

This week in Grade Two:

We spent time doing revision of the following topics:

Literacy

  • Grammar – Parts of the Sentence
  • Comprehension – reading to locate information and sequencing.
  • Numeracy – Place Value and the Expanded Form
  • Science – Force and Motion
  • Bible – Abraham

Students did assessments on these topics after review. Due to the assessments done this week, their Spelling Test is postponed until next week Friday, October 2nd. Woohoo an extra week to prepare. Please have students practice the words that were sent home last.

In Phonics we reviewed short vowel sounds and continue to work with words with the CVC (Consonant Vowel Consonant) pattern.

In preparation for the Terra Nova Exam, students also did a Practice Test.

The Week Ahead

Grammar – Students were introduced to two types of Sentences; Statement and Question this week and we will continue to explore that next week.

Science – We will continue to explore the topic of Force and Motion as students learn about Gravity.

Numeracy – Identify numbers 10 more and 10 less 

Bible – Students were introduced to Moses this week and we will continue our study on him next week.

Updates Sept. 14-18

It is a joy to watch these little brains at work. Our grade two students are resilent and are capable of so much more than we may realize at times.

Our daily reminder is: ‘You are brilliant and you have the ability to achieve great things.’

Updates

Literacy:

We celebrated Roald Dahl day and students were treated to their teachers dressing up as a character from the Roald Dahl novel being read in class. Grade Two’s novel is ‘George’s Marvelous Medicine’.

Students carried out a STAR Reading test.

Phonics – Students continue to learn about CVC words. Students identified words with CVC patten, practiced spelling them and a part of Grammar using them to make simple sentences.

Grammar – Students continue to learn about ‘The Sentence’; identifying the two parts of a sentence and making their own simple sentences, ensuring their sentences have a naming part and an action part.

Comprehension – Students continue to develope the technique of listening and reading to locate information and putting events from stories in correct order. This integrated into Bible, as this week bible activities included students listening to the story readings and locating information to respond to questions and sequencing events correctly.

Writing – This week continued learning how to organize information to order writing correctly. They used the process of elimination to select a topic, use their graphic aid to plan their writing and then wrote two paragraphs (including introduction and supporting details).

Numeracy: 

Students carried out a STAR Math test.

Students continue learning about Place Value. This week we explored the expanded form, changing from standard form (343) to the expanded form (300+40+3) and vice versa. Science:

Students continue to learn about force and motion. This week we reviewed their homework about ramps and discussed and noted the common factors in the videos. Students will carry out an assessment next Wednesday before we move on to another aspect of force motion (Gravity).

Social Studies

As we continue to explore the topic Finding our Way, which will lead into our other topic of study ‘Where we are and where are we going’. Students will receive a Social Studies project on Monday.

 

 

 

Grade Two – Sept. 7 – 11

It is a joy to watch the daily achievements of the students. They continue to improve each day.

Homework:

  • Numeracy and literacy homework to completed and returned on Wednesday, September 16th.
  • A new spelling worksheet has been sent home for students to review for their spelling test next Friday.
  • Students are required to read the book brought home or their own books and tell two things they remember from what they read.

N.B Please sign and return on Monday, September 14th, the graded spelling test sent home with your child/children.

Update: This week we explored the following:

Literacy: 

Phonics: We reviewed vowels and paid attention to the pattern of vowels and consonants in words. The pattern we are looking at is the CVC pattern (Consonant Vowel Consonant), examples – 1. mat 2. tiptop.

Grammar: Subject and Predicate. Our main focus was on the Predicate and identifying the complete sentence with both parts.

Spelling: Students practiced decoding words by their letter sounds, and putting words into alphabetical order.

Writing: Students learned how to plan an expository writing, by using a graphic aid outlining step by step what they need to write.

Numeracy:

This week students worked with manipulatives and diagrams to represent place value. Students also used the place value table to do addition. They were introduced to the hundreds value, which we will concentrate on next week and writing numbers in expanded form.

Students will also receive a times table sheet to practice the two and five times tables.

 

Social Studies:

Students learned about using a map for direction and the different aspects of a map.

Bible:

We concluded our study about Abraham and his family.
