100 days of school!- Mighty Math style

February 12th-100 days

The kids were very excited to finally reach 100 days of school and had been looking forward to it all week. So in grand fashion the day was devoted to all things 100.

The morning was divided into 4 stations the children worked through. My favorite station was the 100 cups structure. It proved to be a really cool problem solving station because the kids had to figure out how to use all the cups and make sure the cups stayed up. It was quite hilarious when the kids began to jump around, out of pure excitement for their achievement and the structure came tubing down and the would have to start over. Despite this, 100 cups station was a hit.

Our Valentine’s was well spent, showing love for our fellow man and for God’s creatures. Jeremy Olynik, one of our parents came into talk to us about our Marine environment, sharing some of his own experiences catching and recording information about the marine world.

The children had lots of questions to ask, and generally enjoyed the interactive and informative presentation.

Our Grade 6 bud die readers came over and had a wonderful treat when Jeremy pulled out… Live LIONFISH! I was far too engrossed in the questions and the general buzz of conversation to remember to take the picture. But rest assured, the kids had a great time.

First Field Trip of the Year!- Weather Station

Our first field trip of the year was to the Weather Station.

All week the kids were completely excited about going to the weather station and hear how weather is recorded in Cayman.

The most exciting part of the them was riding the bus, which was the perfect distance from our school.

Weather affects so  much of what we do. They kids realized early that weather especially on our island is important.

Careers Week was a Massive Hit!

November 4-7th We dub this as Careers Week

A subunit within our look at the community. I believe the best experts are the people in the trenches. What better way to teach kindlers about careers than to have Mom and Dad show us.  Well thats exactly what we did.

Monday I introduced the topic of jobs, Careers and gave the kids some simple definitions.

Worker- Someone who works with the intention of earning money

Volunteer- Works without requiring pay. They can use their free time or choose to volunteer a bit at a time

Intern- Someone who is interested in a job and wants to try it out.

With that being said, Careers Week was all about getting a chance to pretend play for an entire week!

Very hungry catepillar kebabs!

We have been reading “A Very Hungry Caterpillar” as part of our author study. It was a story the children were very familiar with  and after reading it through a few more times, we thought about the story in relation to bears. What would this story sound like if it were about a very hungry bear?

More on that later. Cooking class then was to make a fruit salad with all the fruits that the very hungry caterpillar ate. This was a great opportunity to expose the kids to fruits they had never tried in the safety of a bite sized piece. They enjoyed skewering the fruit along the kebab sticks and nibbling away. Here are a few photos.
