Reading Week

This year our Reading week theme was “Once Upon a Time..” A host of activities took place starting with Family Reading Night in the library on Monday evening. Parents and family members joined us for a reading evening full of tasty treats and traditional tales. Students drank beanstalk juice, tasted magic ‘jelly’ beans and magic wands. These snacks were enjoyed while they relaxed listening to the enchanting fairytales being read.

The Cast of Cinderella

In class, each day, we focused on a different story or fable. Some of our book studies featured, The Three Little Pigs, Aesop’s Fables, Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk. Mid-week, the students were delighted to watch the literacy teachers from each grade in their dramatic production of Cinderella. No fairy tale would be complete without a handsome prince. Our own Mr. Ricky from the office stepped in to search for his mysterious Cinderella! Whilst love was in air, we give thanks for the parents who joined us for a delicious Valentine’s Day lunch, as the production took place.

On Friday, we wrapped up Reading Week with our ‘Dress as a Book Character’ parade.  As usual, the teachers end up having way too much fun as ‘crayons’ from the book “The Day the Crayons Quit” by Drew Dewalt. Characters from Harry Potter and Mary Poppins were also spotted. Students also participated in “Flashlight Friday”. Learners enjoyed reading and sharing their favorite books with friends whilst using torches. It was a fabulous week to inspire students to plan to write their own stories for our FBCS fairytale book.

Field Trip to Nautilus Undersea Tours!

An experience to remember! The children were overly curious and excited to experience life under water. They had an opportunity to learn facts about the different kinds of fish, saw a shipwreck that happened years ago and viewed the famous “Cheese Burger Reef”! We were also lucky to see a “‘Merman” feeding a school of fish. It was a well-spent day outside the classroom!

Field Trip to Turtle Center!

The children had a fabulous time spending the morning outdoors, getting first-hand learning experiences, reviewing lessons taught and learning new facts about Sea Turtles of the Cayman Islands.

Mathletics

Hello Everyone,
I will be sending home a Mathletics website login for your child today. Mathletics is an engaging online math learning space providing students with all the tools they need to be successful learners, both in the classroom and beyond. Please check your child’s behavior logs for this information. On the card, you will find your child’s user name and password. Please feel free to log in with your child and practice skills learned. This is also a perfect opportunity for you and your child to bond. Have fun!

Field Trip to the Botanic Park

We are learning about different types of animals and Kindergarten went on a field trip to the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park. The park provides a habitat for the Cayman Blue Iguana and is a breeding ground for a variety of animals. This helped us learn more about Reptiles in particular and the Blue Iguana, which only two decades ago, faced extinction. Kindergarten students had a guided tour of the grounds, the grow boxes and traditional Cayman artefacts. This visit also allowed us a great opportunity to learn about the flora and fauna indigenous to Cayman.
