Numeracy
Topic: Measurement – Compare Height
Objective: The student should be able to:
• Use direct comparison to compare the heights of objects.

Developing Vocabulary: New Vocabulary: height shorter, taller.

Lesson Introduction:
• Write each word on a separate sheet of paper.
• Show each word to the student (s), say each word.
• Have students repeat each word.
• Have students tell you what they know about each word. E.g., students might describe their height as shorter than or taller than a sibling’s height.

Listening Time: Watch the read-aloud story on the link below:

Ask the following questions:
• What is the title of the story? (Short and Tall Doesn’t Matter at all by Asaf Rozanes)

• Explain in your own words what the story was about? (Possible answer: it’s about a little girl who shows bravery, kindness, and determination; Mia shows her friends that everyone, no matter how small or different, has talents and skills too.)
• What was different about Mia? (she was shorter than all the other kids)
• What did the sun say to the moon? (I am taller than you. You’ll never be as tall as me; you know that’s true.)
• Who was the shortest of all the kids in the story? (Mia)

Learning Activity: Have students locate a door and a bottle in the house. (Put objects beside each other to compare them). Instruct students to use a measuring tool such as a toothbrush, a tissue roll, a spoon, a fork, a tube of toothpaste, or a bar of soap in the box/package to measure those two objects. For example, the students need to tell how many toothbrushes taller the door is and how many toothbrushes shorter the bottle is.
After the students measure the objects, assist them in comparing the objects by using the words, taller and shorter.
N.B. The students need to compare the height of the door to that of the bottle. Describe it. Sample answer: The door is taller than the bottle, or the bottle is shorter than the door.
Ask students, how do you know the door is taller than the bottle? (Sample answer: the door is taller than the bottle because the height of the door is taller than the height of the bottle.)

Repeat this activity with other objects to practice the skill.

If possible, take students outdoors. Ask them to identify trees/flowers that are tall and trees /flowers that are short. Describe them. Compare objects by using the words shorter and taller.

Task: Discuss the activity on page 153 in the Ready Math Textbook. Encourage students to compare objects based on their heights and lengths.
Complete the activities from the Ready Math textbook on pages 154-156. (The instructions are written on each page)

Extended Practice:
Students should work independently to draw on a sheet of paper, something that is taller and something shorter than them. These objects must be different objects from their practice activity.

Bible Story: The Fiery Furnace
Focus: God gives Courage
Objective: To know that God protects Daniel’s friends in the fiery furnace.
Listening Time.
Read Psalm 120:1. Explain that when people are in distress or trouble, they are having a problem and need help. Tell students that God hears His children when they talk to Him and will help them in all situations, even when they need the courage to face a difficult situation. Read Psalm 105:1, Explain that students should thank God for answered prayers, and share the goodness of the Lord with others.

Please read the make-believe story. (see attachment via email)

Ask the following questions:
• What did Beth do when she saw that her sisters were doing something wrong?
• How is Beth like Shadrach, Meshach, and Adeb-Nego?
• What other people in the Bible demonstrated Courage to do what is right?

Learning Activity: Complete the activity from the Bible textbook on page 62. Give students a ruler (pencils only work as well). Instruct them to draw a line to connect flames of matching colors. When all the lines are drawn, ask students what they notice about the picture. Draw students’ attention to how the lines connecting the flames do not touch Shadrach, Meshach, Abed-Nego, and the son of God. Relate this to the bible truth of how the three men were unharmed when they were thrown into the fiery furnace.
