Literacy

Students enjoyed more GRA connections this week and responding to the weekly flip grid questions. We participated in a live weekly twitter, where I asked students the questions and posted them in the twitter group and read the responses from other students around the world. Next week we have a connection with a french school where we will have a translator.

Students learned about long vowel sounds and forming words with the long vowel sounds. Students also started learning about Types of Sentences. We focused on two types of sentences this week – statements and questions. These we will continue to explore next week. Please use the following link to review with your child at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkpJtQy_c_k

Numeracy

We reviewed counting forward by 2s and students are learning to count forward by 5s and 10s, we explored this in various ways, by using manipulatives, doing addition, and a challenge; having a mental math competition.

Please see attached videos, this you may use for practice with your child at home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wq1kRgz7j0I

  • eliminate the rest
  • make a list of what you know about your topic
  • write a topic sentence
  • add details
  • draw a picture
  • give someone your writing to read
  • make corrections

Science

Students continue to learn about life-cycles. This week we reviewed the life-cycle of an insect and students learned about the life-cycle of a mammal. We will continue to compare and contrast life-cycles noting the differences between the mammal life-cycle (cat) and the insect life-cycle (dragonfly).

Social Studies

Students continue learning about grids. This week we looked at important grids: The Equator, the Lines of Latitude and Longitude- the most important line of longitude; the Prime Meridian. Students are learning the importance of grids although the lines are imaginary. We will continue to explore this topic next week, as we view more videos where airplane and ship systems use grids to navigate location.

Grade Two Scoop

Happy October, we are not in an area where we have changing seasons, but each new month brings us closer to Christmas. It is by far our children’s most favoured time of the year :).

Literacy

This week we kicked off the Global Read Aloud (GRA), that is one book connects the world. Second grade classes around the world are presently reading the same book – Stella Diaz has something to say. We have two buddy classes; one from Sunbury Ontario which we did a skype with Friday morning, to talk about the book so far and answer questions from this week’s padlet. Our second buddy class is from Deerfield MA. We have a google hangout appointment with that class next Tuesday. Students also participated in this week’s Flipgrid, by responding to the question, “Like Stella compared herself to her beta fish, what animal would you compare yourself to and why?”

We focused a lot on comprehension this week by combining all of what students have learned so far: sequence of events and compare and contrast those events. In grammar, we reviewed writing complete sentences, identifying the subject and predicate and correcting run-on sentences. Next week we will look at types of sentences – exclamation, statement and questions. Please click the links below to review sentences with your child at home, as students prepare for their upcoming tests.

Note: Worksheets sent home for both Numeracy and Literacy are not homework to be returned to school, but to be used as at home practice, to prepare for tests. Worksheets were sent home Friday and additional ones will be sent home next week as well. However if you notice that your child is unable to complete a task please send worksheet back so I can go through that topic again.

We will continue to review all topics next week.

Numeracy

We reviewed previous topics taught. Upon review, some students did not fully grasp the topic of expanded form. We spent some time on the topic this week and will spend more time on said topic Monday and Tuesday and give students an assessment on Friday. Students learned about odd and even numbers. How to group them and identify which are even and which are odd. Next week we will use even and odd numbers in counting (skip counting), counting by twos and threes. Please see links below, you can watch these with your child as a way to review and for the strategies used in class to teach the above mentioned topics.

Science

We reviewed the previous topics done. Students started learning about life-cycles. We will focus on life-cycle of a mammal and an insect next week and have students note the similarities and differences between the two.

Social Studies

Students learned about the two hemispheres the world is divided into and the equator which divides the world into those two hemispheres. They located the Caribbean on a map and was able to tell which hemisphere the Caribbean can be found in and that we are close to the equator.

Bible

This week we studied Moses and the children of Israel in the wilderness. Students learned why and where Moses received the “Ten commandments.” Next week we will learn about respecting authority and the consequences for disobedience, as we focus on Miriam and Aaron by studying Numbers 12, Romans 13, Hebrews 13 and Exodus 20.

In the loop

The time is going by so fast, it has been a whole month since your children have been back in school.

It has been lovely, getting to know each child, and together they make a wonderful bunch. Parents you are doing a great job raising your children.

Please see what we have done this week and what we look forward to next week.

Literacy

In Phonics students continue learning about vowels. This week we focused on the vowels “O , U, E”. Students were able to blend letters and form words with the short vowel sounds of the focus vowels. Students were also able to think of and suggests CVC pattern words containing the focus vowels.

For grammar we reviewed complete sentences: which includes the naming part, the action part, using a, an, the correctly. Students were introduced to run-on sentences:- Sentences that contain two naming parts and two action parts. We will continue with this next week. Linking phonics to grammar – As a part of continuous formative assessment (class work and oral response) students were able to identify words with the CVC pattern while they carried out tasks. We also practiced using the spelling words in sentences.

For comprehension students continued to learn to compare and contrast events in a story.

Students were not given new spelling words this week, instead next Friday, for their spelling test words will be chosen at random from two previous spelling lists. Please have your child return the spelling tests that were sent home by Thursday. Please see attached document below for the two lists that words will come from.

Subject Updates and Reminders

Literacy

This week, we reviewed the topics taught last week. Students learned about CVC syllable patterns –  paying attention to two syllable words containing a and i vowel sounds.

In Grammar we looked at using a, an, the in sentences and putting words in alphabetical order. Students started learning about Expository Writing (children friendly term – telling what I know). We related this to comprehension, by writing information that we know from the book in correct sequence and using those points to write at least one sentence about each section of the story.

Please spend at least 15 mins. reading to your child each night and asking questions; how, why, what, where, when, during the story. You can  integrate this with bible as a part of your nightly devotions –  we will be reading portions of Exodus chapters 3- 12 next week.

Bible

Students learned about Abraham last week and this week. Next week we’ll be studying Moses.

Social Studies

Students learned about identifying different areas on a map and using a key to read a map. We started studying the map of the area of Bodden Town.

Mathematics

We looked at place value for numbers in the hundreds, we also wrote theses numbers in expanded and standard form.

Science

We looked at the life cycle of the butterfly.

Reminders

Starting next week students must have their school hats to play during recess. If they do not have their hats they will be asked to sit in the breeze way during play times. If students ordered school hats and have not received them, they may wear a personal hat.

Numeracy update: Fractions

Now at this stage, the learners are super confident and will be able to tell you the following: A fraction is a PART OF A WHOLE.

You can’t eat the whole cake, or take all the candies, but you may have part of it.

Questions and topics to discuss with your child:

  1. What is a fraction?
  2. What is a half?
  3. What is a quarter?
  4. Try asking, what is a third or even a fifth?
  5. Draw a bag of marbles, color some blue, some red and some green, then discuss how many are green compared to what fraction is green? Do this for all the other colors.

See some pictures of how we used our bread that was sent to school!
