Grade Two Last Week and Upcoming

Apologies for the late post.

Literacy

In Grammar, students learned about verbs. We looked at verbs in the present tense. Students are learning that an action done by a person or a thing is classified as a verb. Students will continue learning about verbs this week, we will put together what has been taught so far. We will review subject, predicate and nouns; students will be reminded that a complete sentence consists of a subject (the naming part, which has the noun) and the predicate (the action part which has the verb). Phonics- Students are learning about base words and -ing and -ed endings.

For writing students continue to learn about opinion writing and how to write an opinion and add supporting details. In comprehension, we continue to explore the author’s purpose and identifying the main idea in a text.

Numeracy

In Numeracy students will continue to practice using money as we have our in-class shop going for the remainder of grade two. Students will continue carrying out exercises to become more familiar with the U.S dollar currency as that is what they will be tested on for the Terra Nova exam. We will continue practicing addition and subtraction of money. Students will carry out a short assessment on Tuesday on what we have done with money so far. On Wednesday we will move on to fractions (students homework sheet says Monday, that was my mistake.)

ScienceĀ

As students continue learning about Weather, this week students will carry out experiments to investigate how some weather phenomenons occur, such as: lightning, thunder storms and tornadoes.

Social Studies

We will explore the different accents of the Cayman Islands and the impact of other nationalities on the accents. We will continue to explore the districts and what is indigenous to each district.

Bible

Students will continue learning about Esther, we didn’t get through much of the story of Esther last week as we had several activities in the mornings. The readings scheduled for last week will be used this week.

New Beginnings – Quarter 3

We ended Quarter 2 on January 31st and began a new quarter February 3rd. Students were not given homework or spelling words last Friday as we started new topics this week.

Numeracy

Students continue learning about money. This week we focused on subtracting and adding. Students had practice working out math problems consisting of subtraction or addition of money. Please have your child continue to work on getting familiar with: the money pictures, value and names. We have shops set up in our classroom each day so students can also learn through real life experiences of working with money.

Thank you for sending in your empty containers. We now have enough to share among students to keep our lessons ongoing.

Please be reminded that the numeracy project is due on Wednesday February 12. Numeracy project

Literacy

In phonics students learned more about blends, using th, ph, sh, ch to form familiar words and transition to longer words. For Grammar students are learning about collective nouns for people, animals and things. In comprehension, we will be focusing on, the author’s purpose; for example, why he/she wrote about a particular topic, students will also explore how to write out their opinions, such as; why the characters do a particular action. Students will explore Opinion Writing further, as this will be our focus in writing this quarter.

Students resume taking home books each day from Monday – Thursday, book logs are to be handed in on Friday mornings with a parent signature. Book logs record what students read on a daily basis, therefore students are required to document what was read based on the questions asked each day.
