This week in Grade Two

Thank you parents for taking the time to come in and meet.

Literacy

Students are learning about Nouns: This week we focused on Nouns as names of People, Places, Things and Animals. We will continue with this topic next week. Our writing focus for the remainder of the quarter is Narrative Writing. The first aspect is Fictional Narrative and after the Christmas break we will do Personal Narrative. Please see the attached rubric which will be used to mark Narrative Writing. Narrative_Rubric_Gr2

In Phonics students are learning about consonant blends and the sound of those blends when added to a short vowel or long sound. We continue to pay attention to comprehension: Reading a story and using it to respond to questions and support answers and thinking about the why aspect to an answer given (why did you like that part, why do you think they did that), and identifying the theme and main characters in a story.

Numeracy

Students are learning how and when to use the not equal symbols. We focused mainly on the equal symbol this week, getting an understanding of the similarities. One way is making students aware that whatever is on one side when it is the same as what is on the other side then it is equal therefore the equal symbol is used. The following link may be helpful for you to use at home as a reminder of what was taught. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12xkKtNTAYQ Next week we will continue with equal and not equal.

Science

Students continue learning about animals and plants coexisting and how they support each. This week we focused on adaptation which will continue next week. How are living things adapted to their environment – survival skills, plant protection, and animal protection.

Social Studies

Students continue to learn about map reading and The Cayman Islands – A part of the world. They are learning to locate the Caribbean region and islands in the Caribbean. We will continue to use the compass rose to show location of places on the map.

Bible

We will continue with our study of Ruth next week as we look at the following chapters: Ruth 2-3, 4:1-10, Proverbs 17, Romans 5:6-11. Please have students study their bible verses so they can tell it to me each week.

Grade Two Round-Up

Literacy

Students continue learning about long and short vowel sounds and how to blend them into words. We have also been reviewing consonant sounds that vary, such as the C sound that gives a ‘k’ sound or an ‘s’ sound, and the G sound that gives a ‘g’ and a ‘j’ sound. We continued with comprehension practice, using comprehension strategies to help answer questions, and identifying the main idea. We paid attention to the difference between commands and exclamation sentences this week and spent time reviewing the different types of sentences. Students did a short quiz identifying statements, questions, commands and exclamations.

Numeracy

Students continued learning about ordinal numbers, identifying them, and using them correctly. We spent some time exploring numeracy in the form of simple worded questions. Next week students will learn about equal and not equal to and using the correct signs.

Science

Students are enjoying learning about various habitats, and sharing about habitats they may already know and have seen. This week we explored how plants and animals depend on each other to survive in habitats. Next week students will begin learning about natural changes in habitats and their effects on plants and animals.

Social Studies

Map reading is becoming a natural skill for your second graders and soon you will be less dependent on a GPS as they will be navigating to various locations. Students learned how to use various cardinal points on the compass rose to locate places close to and far from the Caribbean. They also learned of where hurricanes are formed and the path they travel through our warm warms.

Bible

We wrapped up our study on Joshua this week and students did a quiz. Next week we move on to study an extraordinary woman of the bible “Ruth”. You may prepare for the week ahead by going through the following verse during devotions with your child: Ruth 1, Proverbs 12, 18 and 27. Genesis 28 and Deuteronomy 31.

The comprehension strategies students are using are: Rereading, using the text for support to answer questions, compare and contrast and identifying and using the main idea to tell what the story is about.

For at home practice, please have your child orally answer questions from the books he/she reads to you or you read to him/her. You may also implement this through bible, during your devotions by reading the passages we will focus on next week:- Joshua 23-24, Joshua 4, Mark 12, Colossians 3, John 4.

Bible

We continue to study Joshua and his obedience to God. Next Friday students will get a short quiz after we review what we have learned about Joshua so far.

Numeracy

Students learned about identifying ordinal positions and using an ordered set of objects such as, blocks, hidden objects, floor tiles, and real life events being in an ordered line, school years, and persons in a race. Next week students will spell ordinal numbers correctly, write the worded form and the numerical forms. Students are required to continue to review their times tables and their ordinal position sheets.

Science

As students are learning about habitats, they are having a great time seeing habitats first hand, by going around the school yard and identifying the various habitats. Students also get the opportunity to use the internet and books to identify habitats. As we look specifically at birds on Tuesday, students will learn that not all birds fly, hence they don’t all live in trees.

Parent question: Please ask your child the following question. They will give me the answer in class on Tuesday.

What is the habitat of an ostrich and a penguin? They may use the internet or if you have access to animal books; to find their answer.

Social Studies

Students are learning that natural disaster affect Cayman and other Caribbean countries because of our location in the world. They identified our location on the map as they learn of our warm waters. As we focus on Natural disasters next week, students will learn about the path of hurricanes.
