Second Grade Round-up

We had a very eventful week.

Literacy

  • We traveled the world with our reading passports, visiting China, India, England, Mexico and the countries of the authors of our favourite book characters. Students had fun getting their passports stamped after each day of reading.
  • We explored responding to questions using complete sentences at all times. We paid attention to the setting of the story and identifying and describing main characters. Students are learning how to edit their work, specifically; capitalization, and punctuation.
  • Next week our focus will be on Exclamation and Command Sentences.

Numeracy

  • We spent this week doing a thorough review of counting backwards, using different methods, such as: the number line, the number grid and subtraction. A previous blog post has a video that you may use to help your child review at home.
  • Next week students will start learning about Ordinal Numbers. Please see your child’s take home folder for the ordinal numbers 1-30, which we will focus on.
  • Students are required to practice their 2, 5 and 10 times table. A sheet containing the times tables from 2-12 can be found in your child’s blue folder.

Science

This week students presented their life-cycle of a mammal/insect project. We spent some time comparing and contrasting the life-cycles the students presented on. Next week we move on to focus on habitats.

Social Studies

  • This week we focused on the Cayman Islands and it’s surrounding, where we are located and some of the dangers that may occur because of our location.
  • Next week our focus will be on Natural disasters that impact the Caribbean, specifically Cayman.

Bible

This week we started studying Joshua. Students learned of how Joshua came to lead the Israelites to the Promised land and what he took with him, and the people who made it to the Promised land. We will continue to study Joshua next week as we focus on the following chapters from the book of Joshua: 1:8-18, 3:5-11.

N.B.

  • Please check your child’s folder for homework and spelling words.
  • Students were given an agenda, this agenda will be used to write important details, such as: test dates, project due dates, school events, field trips dates, when ever they receive such information. Information will continue to be posted on the blog and sent through emails, but now there is an additional place for such, please check your child’s agenda each day, and please have him/her write in relevant information as you see fit.
  • Reading log that is sent home on a Monday is to be filled in each evening after reading (the books that are sent home) and returned to teacher on Friday.
