Grade Two Round-Up

Literacy

Students continue learning about long and short vowel sounds and how to blend them into words. We have also been reviewing consonant sounds that vary, such as the C sound that gives a ‘k’ sound or an ‘s’ sound, and the G sound that gives a ‘g’ and a ‘j’ sound. We continued with comprehension practice, using comprehension strategies to help answer questions, and identifying the main idea. We paid attention to the difference between commands and exclamation sentences this week and spent time reviewing the different types of sentences. Students did a short quiz identifying statements, questions, commands and exclamations.

Numeracy

Students continued learning about ordinal numbers, identifying them, and using them correctly. We spent some time exploring numeracy in the form of simple worded questions. Next week students will learn about equal and not equal to and using the correct signs.

Science

Students are enjoying learning about various habitats, and sharing about habitats they may already know and have seen. This week we explored how plants and animals depend on each other to survive in habitats. Next week students will begin learning about natural changes in habitats and their effects on plants and animals.

Social Studies

Map reading is becoming a natural skill for your second graders and soon you will be less dependent on a GPS as they will be navigating to various locations. Students learned how to use various cardinal points on the compass rose to locate places close to and far from the Caribbean. They also learned of where hurricanes are formed and the path they travel through our warm warms.

Bible

We wrapped up our study on Joshua this week and students did a quiz. Next week we move on to study an extraordinary woman of the bible “Ruth”. You may prepare for the week ahead by going through the following verse during devotions with your child: Ruth 1, Proverbs 12, 18 and 27. Genesis 28 and Deuteronomy 31.
