Dear Parents,

What a busy and fun week we have had in Grade 5 ! The students completed Chapter 1 on Place Value in Math and also completed their first Science unit. We are celebrating completing our first two tests with cupcakes this afternoon 🙂 ( Thanks Ms Nettie )

A few students will be studying their Science paper to do a retake of the test on Monday.

In English the students have learned/ reviewed subjects in imperatives, simple predicates, conjunctions and writing good sentences.

Next week we start the Global Read Aloud adventure, please ask your child to show you the place on www.edmodo.com where they can log in and share thoughts with students form around the world. This is a moderated site so students can only post after it has been approved by a teacher, so all internet safety rules will apply.

Please ask your child the following questions to reinforce what was learned this week in class –

1. How did you do on the Math test ?   Are there any areas of Place Value you still need further help with. ( they can let me know on Monday ).

2.  What is the subject in an imperative sentence ? For example what would be the subject in – Take your books out.

3.  How did God use certain people in Joseph’s life ?

Global Read Aloud

The Grade 5 students will be taking part in a project called Global Read Aloud as they read their first class novel – ‘Out Of My Mind’ by Sharon Draper. The students will read chapters of the book at the same time as hundreds of fifth grade classes across America and internationally. They will then connect with two classes to share ideas on edmodo, Skype to discuss and possibly even set up kidblogs to share their writing. This is going to be an exciting adventure into global reading ! We will start on 30th September, so check the blog for updates.

Some of our learning resources can be found on the link

I look forward to watching the Grade 5 students explore this novel and at the same time explore connections with other global classrooms !
