Christmas Week! 16th – 18th and BREAK 19th – 7th January

Hello! The last few days before Christmas break, here are a few updates and reminders.

Camana Bay Food drive, due Wednesday!

  • We passed out a blue Camana Bay reusable bag last week, which can be used to filled for the food drive, please turn in by Wednesday. Thank you for any donation you can give, it’s a great way to help those in need this Christmas and give an encouraging start to their new year.
  • These can be turned in earlier.

Class Christmas Party, Wednesday.

  • Just a reminder about the class parties. Check in with your students on what they have signed up for, if it’s not possible to bring that item please let us know and we can work something out.
  • Dress down, follow school dress code
  • Electronics = yes
  • Board games/games = yes
  • Secret Santa gift! = $10 (book)
  • Christmas spirit = YES (:

Christmas Break 

Numeracy

  • Please practice multiplication and division in someway, games, online, mathletics etc. even if that’s 5 – 1o minutes a day. If you’re traveling, try on the plane with playing cards. They know a lot of games with them and it’s a fun way to practice those skills.
  • Make sure all mathletics activities are up to date

Literacy

  • Read every day for 30 minutes, don’t let that get behind; especially Battle of the Books contestants! This is a great time to search for books and begin reading.

Have a wonderful break spending time with family and friends. It has been a whirlwind few months as students began grade 5, so this is a well deserved break.

Weekly Objectives and Homework: Dec. 9-13th

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Christmas now is in full swing and we hope during the hectic times, you find times to rest, enjoy traditions, and a fun Christmas movie!

Countdown to Christmas break: 1.5 weeks left (;

Literacy

  • Reading – this week we will read a short non-fiction story on George Washington and answer think critically questions as well as apply the skill of text structure – sequence.
  • Grammar – Students will complete work on Subject-verb agreement, Agreement with Be and Have and Contractions with Not.
  • Writing – Students are completing their neat narrative writing and starting a new Christmas theme narrative writing piece.

Numeracy

  • Students will review skills in word problems that involve patterning and addition/subtraction.
  • We will also use estimation to determine a product with whole numbers and decimals.

Science

  • Students will learn how energy transfers into other forms, like motion. We will learn one of the motions used is kinetic energy.
  • We will also compare and contrast energy forms.

Social Studies

  • Students are studying the Natural Environment of the Cayman Islands including the types of mangroves. Students will complete a fact file on a local plant or animal. We will also examine the fragile environments and protected areas of Cayman.

Bible

  • Students will learn about the Christmas story, focusing on the promised Messiah.

  • Mathletics: Monday – Thursday
  • Monday – ‘Are you ready?’, the remainder of the week is differentiated and covers addition and subtraction.

Announcements 

  1. Class party on Wednesday, 18th! (full day). We will have a movie, food, and games. Students can bring in games (board games, uno, etc) and electronics.
    • We will send out an email later this week about snacks and food for the party. We really appreciate anything your family can provide, we don’t want to overload, especially at this time of the year. Thank you (:

Homework and Objectives December 2nd – 6th

The countdown to Christmas has begun! Only a couple more weeks left of the school year and still lots to do, check out the blog for updates and changes that may occur (:

Literacy

  • Reading – we are reading a short story and some poetry from unit 7 of our Storytown book.
  • Grammar – We will  carry on  with verbs and look at past and present tense.
  • Writing – Narrative writing – students will finish and copy up their narrative writing.

 Numeracy

  • We will review our multiplication methods on column multiplication with multiple digits and division. We will use these skills to solve multiplication and division practical problems.
  • + and – practical problem test will be on Tuesday.
  • Students will also be completing their STAR Math this week.

Science

  • Students will take notes on how energy gets transferred to other objects and the results. We will use the research they’ve done on different energy forms and compare them.

Social Studies 

  • This week we look at the local flora and fauna – and research a local plant or animal.
  • Students will also check their understanding of scale and distance on maps.

  • Grammar Pg 44 – Tuesday
  • Grammar Pg 46 – Thursday

Numeracy:

  • Monday: Complete classwork on review of + and – practical problems.
  • Wednesday: Column multiplication (differentiated) #1 – 15
  • Thursday: Division worksheet (differentiated)

Tests

  1. Tuesday: Addition and Subtraction practical problems

To study:

    • students can review work we did in class, noticing key words and how they set out problems.
    • Finish classwork that we started in class.
    • Go to ‘Numeracy Resources’ post and use one of the links to practice other practical problems.

Announcements

  1. Monday: Christmas Concert! Hope you all can make it and join us for dessert after in the breezeway.
    • Attire: Students should wear Red or White with jeans.
    • Grade 5 A & 5 B -1 case juice boxes (capri sun, minute maid) or 1 case small water bottles
  2. Friday: Dress Down (No Fruity Friday) – Bring a $1 for Meals on Wheels, wear Orange

Future dates to note:

  1. Tuesday, 10th December: Hot Chocolate and Books in the library, 5:30-6:30.
  2. Last day of term, Wednesday, 18th December. This is a full day!
  3. Camana Bay Food Drive, students have been given a Camana Bay bag to return all the canned and non perishables in. Turn in by Wednesday, 18th December. (One bag per family, they have been handed out already)
