Letter to the Parents – 26/09/2014

We have had a fun, rainy, and educational week in Grade 5 !
In Math we completed Chapter 1 on Place Value. Please make sure your child showed you their Math test and had it signed by you. We then started our new Chapter today on Measurement. I will be sending home the first Star Math and Star Reading reports today with your child. This is one indication of the grade level your child is at, and will serve as a benchmark for me as strive to improve each child’s knowledge this year. Please email me if you have any questions about these reports.
In literacy we continued on with Storytown reading comprehension and in grammar looked at sentence structure.
In Science we completed the first unit – Cells to Body Systems, and next Tuesday they will have a Science test. A review of what they learned in this Chapter.
TUESDAY 30th SEPTEMBER – Grade 5 will have their pictures taken. Please make sure they have the proper school uniform on. Also on this day will be our field trip to Camana Bay.
Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to help reinforce class learning –

Letter to Parents – 19/9/2014

We have had an excellent, productive week in Grade 5.
In Math the students have continued on with Place Value through to Thousandths and have been comparing numbers and decimals. The end of Chapter test will be next Wednesday. I have given each child a study packet for the test, they can complete a couple of questions from each sheet over the weekend.
In English the students have been working on sentences in grammar, and comprehension in reading. They also completed a graded speaking and listening exercise.
In Science we have started looking at the Body Systems – the circulatory system, respiratory system and the skeletal system.
We will be going on a field trip on Tuesday 30th September to Camana Bay to listen to Christian author Karen Kingsbury talk about her new children’s book. The book is a little young for the Grade 5 students, but we will still go as I feel it is always a rewarding experience to listen to an author talk about their work. The permission slip is in their bag today.
Auditions for the Christmas Concert will be on Friday 26th Sept at 3pm in the Music Suite.
Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to reinforce our class time –
1. What are the major organs in the Respiratory System ?
2. How would you compare the decimals – 3.9 and 3.56 ? Which is greater ?
3. What can you remember about the story ‘Line Drive’ ? Please also encourage your child to be reading their library book each day.

Testing Reaction Time !

In Science today Grade 5 were exploring Body Systems and how they work together.

This experiment tested reaction time – and looked at how fast our brain sent signals through the nervous system.

Roald Dahl Day – Sept 15th.

Today is Roald Dahl day ! I hope you have a ‘scrumpdillyuptous’ type of day 🙂 It is also the 50th Anniversary of the book ‘ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ‘.

To celebrate we watched a broadcast from the Drury lane theatre in London, with information about Roald Dahl, a sing a long, and a ‘how to draw’ Willy Wonka with the illustrator Quintin Blake.

You could watch this again at home with your child at  –
