Letter to Parents – 18/10/2013

Dear Parents,
Whew ! What a fun and busy week we have had.
Today the students had a great time at the National Gallery, they were given a guided tour of the photographs of ‘yesteryear’ Cayman and then made a piece of ‘turtle art’. A big THANK YOU to our drivers and helpers – Marlene, Renita, Jessica, Morag and Nettie.
The students have completed the Math Chapter on Add and Subtract Decimals and Whole Numbers and will be taking a Math Test on Tuesday 22nd October.
We will also be skyping with a class from Providence Rhode Island on Tuesday as part of our Global Read Aloud connection.
Mid term break is Wed 23rd to Fri 25th Oct.
Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to help reinforce our class time –
1. Explain compensation – how would you use compensation to add 57 + 23 mentally ?
2. What is your favourite part of the novel ‘Out Of My Mind’ so far ?
3. Which endangered animal are you working on with your partner ? What do you know about why that animal is endangered ?
Thanks as always for your cooperation in the education of your child,
Janine Nyyssonen

Letter to Parents – 11th October 2013

Dear Parents,

I loved seeing the biography projects the students produced today. Very interesting reports, well presented and creative shoe box designs. Well Done Grade 5 ! This week the students are enjoying reading more of our novel Out Of My Mind and connecting with our partner classes around the world. They are working on adding and subtracting whole numbers, both with estimates and exact numbers. They have also completed some problem- solving with estimates and exact numbers. We completed our Science unit on Living Things and next week the students will choose an endangered animal to research with a partner in class.

The Open House is next Tuesday (15th October) at 6pm, I look forward to seeing you. There will be a chance to sign up for parent conferences, these will take place after mid-term break and you will also receive your child’s mid-term report at this conference. If you have started to think ahead to middle school / high school already – our school board president Uche Obi will be in my room at 6pm during the Open House to chat with you

Please ask your child the following questions to help review class time –

1. What are spiritual gifts ? How can you use your spiritual gifts ?

2. What did Melody want to ask the Wizard of Oz for ? What would you ask for ?

3. How did you do on the Mid-Chapter check ? How would you estimate this question – 89 + 62 ?

Thank you as always for your cooperation,

Have a great weekend,

Janine Nyyssonen.

Build a backbone

We enjoyed making a model to represent the backbone – the spinal cord and the vertebrae. We want to add something next week to represent the discs.
