Letter to the Parents – 24/10/2014

Dear Parents,
I hope you are having a great Friday and are looking forward to mid-term break !
In literacy this week the students have enjoyed skyping with a class in California and having a video made about the Global Read Aloud programme. I will put the link to the video and news article on the blog so you can watch with your child.
In numeracy the students have been studying mean, median and mode. We started a new chapter on Data.
I have sent home a permission slip today with your child for our field trip on Tuesday 4th November. We will be going to the Mission House and the Botanic Park. I need one parent to accompany us that is able to take 4 students in their car, please let me know if you are able to join us. In Social Studies we have been learning about early settler life, so at the Mission House we can see what education was like in Cayman ,and see the Caymanian house and garden at the Botanic Park.
Please ask your child the following questions to reinforce our learning time –
1. What is the mean, median and mode of the following numbers – 12, 14, 16, 20, 26 ?
2. Where do you put the apostrophe when writing a plural possessive noun ?
3. What does atonement mean ?

I will look forward to seeing the students back in class on Monday 3rd November

Dear Parents,
Happy Friday !
It has been another busy and enjoyable week in Grade 5 !
Thank you to each of you for coming to meet with me this week to discuss the progress of your child. Do not forget you can email me anytime if you have any questions.
In literacy this week we have continued on with the Global Read Aloud book and connected with a class in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The students have also studied common, proper, singular and plural nouns.
In numeracy we examined how to work out the volume of prisms, and then reviewed area, surface area, perimeter and volume.
We completed Chapter 2 in Science – Classifying Living Things.
On the 21st November will be the ‘International Night’. This will be a fundraiser for the school – as teachers, students and parents work together to create a class booth. Grade 5 will be doing Great Britain. We will study England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. There will be food samples and displays on our table to represent the UK. I would LOVE your help with this !  If you are good at building, cooking, or feeling artistic – please let me know if you are willing to help and if you have any ideas. THANK YOU !
Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to reinforce class time –
1. How do you work out the Volume of a Prism ?
2. What is a Proper Noun ?
3. How does God communicate with us ?
Thank you as always for your help and cooperation in the education of your child.

Letter to the Parents – 10/10/2014

Dear Parents,
We have had another fun and productive week in Grade 5 filled with Poetry, Perimeter and Pasta 🙂 ( your child will explain what I mean about the pasta ).
In literacy we have enjoyed starting the Global Read Aloud connections, we read the first 5 chapters of ‘The Fourteenth Goldfish’, then ‘blogged’ our thoughts, and today we have skyped a class in Akron, Ohio. We discussed the book, our thoughts and predictions. The class also enjoyed hearing about fall leaves, ice skating and snow 🙂
In numeracy we continued on with Measurement – finding and measuring area. This week the class learned about 3D shapes with our guest teacher Ms. Babb.
In Science we have studied classifying living things. Today we have completed an experiment to see how the backbone is structured in vertebrates.
Please ask your child the following questions –
1. What did you discuss about the class novel with the class in Akron ?
2. What is a face of a shape ? What is a vertex ?
3. How many faces does a rectangular prism have ?
I look forward to meeting with you next week during the mid-term conferences,
Thank you as always for your cooperation in the education of your child.

3D lesson with Ms. Babb

Our guest teacher – Ms Babb came in today and taught the students a lesson on three-dimensional shapes. The class had fun learning new vocabulary then applying this knowledge.
