Letter to the Parents 31/01/14

Dear Parents,
We had a wonderful field trip today and I was so impressed with the parent turn out ! Thank you so much. Grade 5 parents are the best 🙂
In literacy this week we have started our new novel ‘ Tuck Everlasting’.
In numeracy we have begun a unit on Algebraic Expressions. A couple of students will need to do a retake on the division test. Before they do that I have asked them to study their times tables for the next two weeks. Practice on Mathletics could help this too.
In Science I have given the students their project sheet for the school Science Fair. The theme is ‘Save the Grouper : Protect our Reef.’ Pease see the details on the grade 5 blog for more information.
On Monday 3rd February is the FBCS and Wee Care Open House. It will begin in the Chapel at 5.30pm, then continue in the gym. This is the perfect time to visit the Grade 6 table to see some of the wonderful things they will be doing next year !
Thank you as always for your cooperation in the education of your child,

Grade 5 Science Fair Project

Science Project Grade 5 2014

Save the Grouper : Protect our reef

For the Science Fair project you will work with a partner to complete a campaign awareness project on why it is important to protect the Nassau Grouper and why this is important for Cayman’s Coral Reef.

You will research and present a written report on the following questions –

What is a Nassau Grouper?

What is the role of the Nassau Grouper in maintaining a healthy, reef ecosystem?

What is a keystone species?

What is a spawning aggregation?

What is the role of the Nassau Grouper in the Cayman fishing community?

How do we protect the survival of the Nassau Grouper and the health of the reef, while meeting the needs of the fishing community?

You will also complete a poster and information booklet to advertise to people the importance of the Grouper and the Coral Reef in Cayman.

You could even complete a PSA or commercial to promote awareness!

The project is due on Monday 24th February. You will then display your project in the school Science Fair on Thurs. 27th February. Be ready to be able to answer questions about your report to the judges!

Have fun finding about the Nassau Grouper and our beautiful Coral Reef !

Save the Grouper – Protect our Reef !

For the 2014 Science Fair FBCS will aim to raise awareness of the importance of conserving our beautiful Coral Reef here in Cayman.

Grade 5 will focus on the Nassau Grouper  – why this fish is so important, what can we do to conserve the fish and how this effects the Coral Reef.

Check out www.reef.org/groupermoonproject for more information.

We will aim to answer the following questions –

What is a Nassau Grouper?

What is the role of the Nassau Grouper in maintaining a healthy, reef ecosystem?

What is a keystone species?

What is a spawning aggregation?

What is the role of the Nassau Grouper in the Cayman fishing community?

How do we protect the survival of the Nassau Grouper and the health of the reef, while meeting the needs of the fishing community?

Field Trip – Mangrove Kayak Tour

Dear Parents,

Our field trip will be on January 31. We will leave school about 9am to go to Safe Haven. We have split the groups up to accomodate a few parents, so Grade 5 will be in the morning, Grade 4 and 6 will go in the afternoon. So we now have room for a couple of parents to accompany us, please email me if you would like to come on the trip and be in a kayak, or if you are able to drive. WE NEED 3 or 4 PARENTS to drive.

Students are to come to school in their swimwear, shorts, tshirt that they can get wet. They should also bring a towel and their P.E kit to change in to after the trip.

Thanks so much for your help.

A Healthy Reef – Visit from Courtney Platt

Grade 5 ( and the whole school ) enjoyed a presentation from Mr Courtney Platt , informing us about the importance of protecting the Coral Reef and saving the Nassau Grouper.  The Grade 5 students listened well, enjoyed the information and asked some great questions. We learned about why we should not be eating reef fish and what we can do to protect this beautiful underwater paradise that God has provided us with !

Thank you Mr Courtney !

Letter to Parents – 10/01/2014

Dear Parents,
Happy 2014 ! I hope you had a wonderful and restful Christmas holiday.
We have dived straight back into work this week in Grade 5. I told the students that I think this middle grading period is very important and a time to really improve and extend their skills.
In Math we are working with Division, this week was estimating quotients and one-digit dividing. All students could benefit reviewing their times tables over the next couple of weeks, it is difficult to divide without a good grasp of multiplication !  In literacy we have been using adjectives in writing and reading about Leonardo de Vinci in the Storytown unit.
The students have started an Ocean unit in Science, which will lead into a study of Coral Reefs followed by a Grouper project for the school science fair.
Please ask your child the following questions to reinforce class time –
1. How would you estimate 248 divided by 5 ?
2. How are waves made in the Ocean and how do they move ?
3. What happened in the story Leonardo’s Horse ?
Thank you as always for your cooperation in the education of your child,
Janine Nyyssonen
