Homework and Objectives: October 28th – November 1st

Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful week off of school and had some time to enjoy family, friends, and make some memories.

Here’s a look at the week.

Literacy:

This week will look at a little different as we are celebrating Reading Week. Check out what we will focus on each day in literacy.

Monday – China – The Runaway Wok

Tuesday – India – Listen to Elephant Dance

Wednesday – England – The Gruffalo

Thursday – Mexico – Frida Kahlo

Friday – Africa – The Water Princess

Also on Friday students can dress up as a book character and bring in their favourite book.

Writing: Students are working on their research expository essay on an animal

Grammar: We study singular and plural nouns.

Science: We will be finishing our topic of the rock cycle and extend with understanding how weathering and erosion affect the cycle and earth’s surface.

Numeracy: Students will continue comparing and ordering fractions from the previous week of school, but this time focusing on decimals. Students will also be learning about odd/even and prime and composite numbers.

Social Studies: Students will be studying land mass, directions and distance.

Reminders

  1. We have agendas! They have finally arrived after some shipping issues, so please be sure to check backpacks that they are using them and checking the work they have for the week.
  2. Friday: Character Day! Encourage your child to come to school in their favorite character from a book. (Not a free dress down day)

14th – 17th October: Objectives and Homework

Literacy:

I was so impressed with the Biography projects and dioramas – the students did a great job presenting to each other. Well Done Grade 5! – Mrs. Nyyssonen 

  • Reading: This week in reading Grade 5 will continue on with The Bridge Home – exploring character – how the author will ‘show not tell’ and the major themes. The new list of vocabulary words were given out today (Monday 14th ) – they will study for a test on Thursday.
  • Writing: The students are continuing on with their second expository essay on their chosen family. They will follow a research plan and structure in class.
  • Grammar: As we continue on with Nouns – Unit 2 – Grade 5 will use common and proper nouns and effectively use nouns in compound sentences.

We will also complete the DRA reading assessment.

Numeracy

  •  Students will be focusing on comparing and ordering numbers using fractions and decimals.
  • We will learn methods of how to convert fractions from improper to mixed and vice versa.

Science

  • Students will be finishing part of their study on Rock Cycles, by completing a Venn diagram of their research on origins of rocks (Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic).
  • They will also begin learning how these rocks are affected over time through weathering, erosion, and disposition.

Social Studies

  • Grade 5 will be completing a poster on India. They will also complete their work on settler life in Cayman.

Bible

  • 5A: For Bible this week we will finish our study on Joseph and prepare for an assessment on Thursday.
  • 5B: For Bible this week we look at the life of Moses and prepare for an assessment on Thursday.

Homework

Grammar: p. 14, due Wednesday

Spelling: p. 20-22, due Thursday

Numeracy:

Students will be given their Science test results on Tuesday. Please review and return signed by Wednesday.

Read to the end of Chapter 22 – write a summary of the main events from this section of the novel.

Literacy

Reading – Students will continue on with Chapters 8 – 15 of The Bridge Home. We enjoyed a google hangout with our partner class in Winnipeg this week and connected via a Padlet to explain the similarities and differences between the Cayman Islands, Winnipeg and India – the setting of the novel. Next we will explore description in the book and write our own description of a favourite food item.

Grammar – Students  have completed their Unit 1 Grammar test on sentence structure , imperatives, subjects, predicates and correcting run-on sentences. We will  begin unit 2 – Nouns. This week we will start with identifying, capitalizing and proofreading common and proper nouns.   

Writing – Students continue on with learning the structure of an expository essay and writing a second assessment – their biography projects and dioramas will be presented in class on Friday. If students have a rough draft to bring in they will be able to work on the editing in class.

Numeracy:

Students will review fractions, models, and decimals. Then find equivalents between them using models and without.

Science: 

Students will continue our new topic of rock cycles by completing their own diagram and beginning an in class project on comparing and contrasting igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. Their final notes will be put into a venn diagram.

Social Studies:

Grade 5 will explore what life was like in Cayman for the early settlers – comparing aspects of early life with life today.

We will also begin a research unit on India – to compliment our Global read Aloud novel. 

Bible:

 5A will finish their study on Joseph, while 5B we will begin looking at the Life of Moses – and discussing Spiritual Gifts and how we can use the talents that God has given to us.

  • Thursday: Earth’s structure for science – involves knowing the 4 main structures of Earth, plate boundaries and their affects on earth’s surface. (study composition book and study guide)

  • Friday: DUE – The Biography of A Remarkable Person and diorama

Reminders

  1. FIELD TRIP! Wednesday and Friday. Cost in total is $6 per student. Waiting on final count from Fruity Friday to know if we can use some towards this trip. If possible money will be returned to each student. We will be visiting UCCI to participate in their STEM Conference.
