Letter to Parents 22/11/2013

Dear Parents,

I look forward to seeing everyone that can make it at the Fall Dinner this evening – 5.30pm onwards.

This week in Grade 5 the students have completed the Math Chapter on Multiplication, the test will be on Monday, 25th November. In literacy we have started a new Storytown unit on the theme of Facing Challenges. In Social Studies we have continued learning about early settler life in Cayman and begun to work on maps and plotting positions.

I enjoyed reading the book reports today ! Very nice, detailed and well presented work – great job Grade 5 !

Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to reinforce class time.

1. What are some differences between early settler life and life today in Cayman ?

2. Ask your child to make sure they are prepared for the Math test on Monday –  are there any concepts they want to review ?

3. Complete some Mathletics questions on multiplication.

Thanks as always for your help,

Janine

Letter to Parents – 15/11/2013

Dear Parents,

Another fun and educational week in Grade 5 !

I loved all the costumes for Heritage Day, I was very proud that everyone participated so well. We talked about Cayman traditions and heritage, listened to some local music, designed a poster, completed our family tree and ended the day with a quadrille dance ! 🙂

In Math the class moved on to multiplying two digit numbers and multiplication patterns. In English they have prepared for their book report and wrote some wonderful poems. We watched a video titled ‘Don’t laugh At Me’ for inspiration with our poems.

Here is the link if you would like to watch it with your child

The book report is due Friday 22nd November.

Our next Math Test will be on Monday 25th November.

Here are some questions to discuss with your child –

1. What did you learn from the song ‘Don’t laugh at me’ and also from the book Out Of My Mind ?

2. Which multiplication property is this – 5x(2×10) = 2x(5×10)

3. Start a family gratitude list or thankful tree.

Thank you as always for your cooperation in the education of your child,

Janine.

Spelling Bee

Letter to Parents 1/11/2013

Dear Parents,

What a fun event filled week we have had in Grade 5 !

The students did a great job of leading the Harvest Festival Assembly on Wednesday – I was very proud of them 🙂

In English they  successfully completed a grammar check up. In Math we have begun a new chapter – Multiply Whole Numbers. Now would be a good time for them to review their times tables. We have started Social Studies and are enjoying finding out about explorers and the New World.

Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to review our class time –

1. Using distributive  property how would you quickly work out 5 x 26 ?

2. Which explorer did you research ? What did you discover ?

3. What are some ‘giants’ in our lives ? How can we overcome them ?

Thank you as always for your cooperation,

Janine Nyyssonen
