Letter to Parents – 12/09/2014

Dear Parents,
We have had a fun and productive week in Grade 5 ! The students have settled in well and are following the classroom routines well.
In Math the students have worked with the four step plan in Problem Solving, continued with understanding Place Value and have just started converting fractions to decimals.
In English they have finished their first piece of descriptive writing and have enjoyed writing poetry and completing a reading comprehension assignment.
In Science the students have examined the structures of cells and looked at how cells, tissues, organs and body systems work together.
If you would like to pay for the class novel for your child to keep please send in the $17 on Monday.
Here are some questions to ask your child over the weekend –
1. What was the theme of the story ‘Rope Burn’ ?
2. What would 5/10 be, when written as a decimal ?
3. What are the parts of a plant cell ?
Thank you for your continued support in the education of your child !

Place Value Action !

To help us understand Place Value better we got moving in Math class today. We created a Place Value chart on the floor to try and help us visualize where each number is.

You could try this at home ….

Global Read Aloud

Here is some extra information about the Global Read Aloud taken from their website.

We are excited to get started and will be connecting with 7 other classes – from England, Canada and different parts of the USA.

The students will be connecting via kidblog and Skype.

You can visit our class blog at http://kidblog.org/Grade5FBCS – once we start blogging we would appreciate any comments you would like to leave on our class blog 🙂

What is the Global Read Aloud?

The project was created in 2010 with a simple goal in mind; one book to connect the world.  Now with four years under our belt and more than 200,000 connections made, we realize we are on to something larger than us so we look forward to continuing the global connections.

The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 6-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible.  Each teacher decides how much time they would like to dedicate and how involved they would like to be.  Some people choose to connect with just one class, while others go for as many as possible.  The scope and depth of the project is up to you.  In the past we have used Twitter, Skype, Edmodo, our wiki, email, regular mail, Kidblog, and any other tools we can think of to make these connections.  Teachers get a community of other educators to do a global project with, hopefully inspiring them to continue these connections through the year.

Letter to the Parents – 5/9/2014

We have had a great first few days in Grade 5.
The students are responding well to my discipline and reward system. They are all working well.
We will have our first class meeting this afternoon, and will have one at least every month.
In Math we have begun the first unit on Place Value, finding the place and value of numbers up through the billions. In English we have started appreciating poetry – reading and responding to it. They also wrote some great poems. Today we have gone over the writing process and they have started a descriptive writing assignment.
Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to reinforce class time    –
1. 350,000 – What is the place and value of the number 5 ?
2. What are the steps in the Writing Process ?
3. What did you do in your class meeting today ?
