Class info 11th January 2019

Happy Friday and Welcome to Term 2 !

We have settled back into the routine and have been working hard this week.

In reading the students have studied tall tales and a non fiction piece. We will start our new class novel in 2 weeks.

In writing they have been working on an opinion essay.

In Social Studies we continue on with The Natural Environment in Cayman – the students have been assigned a mini project due on the 25th January to research a local plant and animal.

Letter to the Parents 28/11/2018

Dear Grade 5 Parents and Guardians,

As the year draws to a close we have some important test dates the students need to be aware of.

We have completed the Global Read Aloud novel and the students have a book report due tomorrow – they have been working in class on this.

Monday 3rd December at 6.30pm in Chapel is our Christmas Concert – the choir are to wear jeans and a white, silver or gold top, dancers can wear black leggings and the cast will wear their costume.   

If you are missing any costume items please let me know. We will meet in the Music Suite at 6.15pm on Monday.    

Here are the upcoming test dates –

Wednesday 5th Dec – Math test

Thursday 6th Dec – Grammar test on nouns

Friday 7th Dec – Science and Bible test.

Some other dates to remember –

Friday 7th December – Dress Down for Meals on Wheels and Grade 5 assembly

Wednesday 12th December – 5.30 – 6.30pm – books and hot chocolate – family reading night in the library

Thursday 13th December – possible trip to the Pines

Friday 14th December – Christmas party.

Literacy – 5/11/2018

In Literacy this week Grade  have continued on with Amal Unbound. Using quotes and descriptions to show comprehension. 

For writing we have started on the first draft of a Personal Narrative.

In spelling we have added on 5 extension words each week to challenge ourselves.

Questions for this week –

  1. How is Amal feeling ?
  2. How can you make the opening of a Personal Narrative interesting ?
  3.  What does amorphous mean ?  

Mid term conferences

Just a reminder today and tomorrow ( Tuesday 16th Oct ) we are having mid term conferences after school.

Reading Week

Grade 5 enjoyed Reading Around the World this week.

We studied books from Europe, Asia, South America and Africa.

To end the week  – everyone came dressed as their favourite book character.

Also each student received a Reading Certificate to celebrate meeting the Reading Challenge !

Letter to the Parents 24/2/2017

Dear Parents,

Happy Culture Awareness Day ! It is really wonderful to celebrate all the cultures we have represented here at FBCS.
In literacy we have moved back into Storytown and the students studied a informational narrative about the tidal zones in Cobscook Bay. In writing we have been looking at adjectives and elaborating sentences. The students have also learned to create a padlet.
In Social Studies we continue on with our study of Tourism in the Cayman Islands.
School closes at noon next week Tuesday 28th February.
Have a wonderful mid term break.

Semi-Abstract Art

In Art class we enjoyed doing some pastel work with the theme of ‘The Natural Environment’, we did a semi abstract piece inspired by our trip to the gallery.
