Art in Grade 3

We made traditional Caribbean houses using mixed media.

We looked at a variety of Caribbean houses and then did a pencil sketch of a Caribbean house.  Next the students used bright colors to paint their house.  Then the students outlined the house with black marker.   The students then cut out the house and glued it onto hard cardboard pieces to make the house pop up on it’s blue backing.  Finally the students used construction paper to cut out palm trees,  a sun, shutters and stairs for their houses.

The students worked really hard and I’m very proud of how well their art work turned out!  Come on into Open House this evening (6:00 – 7:30pm) to have a look at the finished project.

Homework 7 – 11 October

MondaySpelling.  Review of words learnt over the last four weeks.  The test on Friday will be a selection of 20 words rather than all 60 of the review words.  Students are to complete p15-18 for homework.  Due Thursday.

TuesdayMath.  Focus on two digit addition.  Math Homework Book p14.  Remember to complete Mathletics tasks and take part in the online Mathletics competition.  Students who achieve 1,000 points per week get a bronze, silver or gold certificate.  These certificates will be printed out and displayed in our Math Center.

WednesdaySocial Studies.  We have finished our Science focus for this first grading period and will now be focusing on Social Studies.  We are particularly looking at the heritage symbols and history of Cayman.  Tonight’s homework is taken from the Social Studies workbook p27.  Students are to choose Option 1 or 2 from the Finding Out section.  All work is to be presented in their Inquiry composition book.

ThursdayGrammar and Writing. Grammar focus is on correcting run-on sentences.  This is a high area of need in this grade 3 class as many students forget to use periods and capital letters in their writing.  Students are asked to complete the challenge activity on p14.  The writing application on p14 does not need to be completed.  However,  students have chosen a famous person for their biography writing assignment.  The majority of this assignment will be completed in class.  So tonight they are asked to find a famous quote by their person and a picture of their person.  They also write down the website or title of the book of where they got this information.  Please see your child’s agenda for specific details pertaining to their person.

Bible Memory Verse:

“The Lord your God is gracious and compassionate.  He will not turn his face from you if you return to him.”
