Subject Updates, Test Dates and Field Trip

Literacy Update

Students continued to learn about Adjectives – this week we explored special adjectives; called articles (a, an, the). We reviewed what are vowels and consonants, hence painting a clear picture for students to understand when to use a and an.

Students continued to practice story writing in class. Students are enjoying reading the book “The Boxcar Children.” They have come up with interesting predictions about the story’s ending and we look forward to seeing who came closest with their prediction.

Math Update

During the week of Inspection we were finishing up DATA and we started the unit on TIME. The students have been practicing telling time using both an analogue and digital clock. They also learnt how to calculate elapsed time in increments of 1 hour.

The areas that needed the most work was telling time in words using the analogue clock. For example, 3:50 can also be said as fifty minutes past three or ten minutes to four.

Using a number line helped students calculate elapsed time.

In Math computation we started division by using manipulatives (counters) to group large numbers into smaller ones. The division equation was also introduced.

36 ÷ 4 = 9

The terms dividend, divisor and quotient were introduced.

No Math homework this week.

Science Update

We completed the unit on Soil and have been practicing howto answer questions related to the topic. In addition students have been working on different ways to show what they understand about the topic.

In the upcoming week we will continue to practice and a formative test will be given to inform me what further intervention might be needed. A test on Soil will be given on Tuesday April 9.

PLEASE USE THIS WEEKEND TO WORK ON SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS. FOLLOW THE LINKS THAT WERE SENT IN A PREVIOUS EMAIL, TO GET SOME IDEAS.

TEST PAPERS WILL BE RETURNED ON MONDAY 1 ST APRIL.

Literacy

This week students learned about Adjectives – they learned what an adjective is, different types of adjectives; that tell what kind and how many.

The writing type students are learning about this half of the term, is Descriptive Writing (Fictional Story).

We also practiced using the dictionary, please allow your child to continue doing so at home. They can practice dictionary use by searching for the words from their spelling lists.

There are no new words this week. In your child’s folder you will find two lists of vocabulary words. Students received those words on previous spelling lists, students need to review them. I will choose words at random from both lists for the next Spelling Test on March 29, 2019.

Social Studies

For this half term, students will be learning about the Cayman Islands and the contribution of other nationalities. Students will be exploring their lives presently and what is accessible to them in present day. This week students started learning about history (the past), as the past helps to shape the present.

Project

Students were given a project and an essay preparation outline this week.

There will be no test for this half of the term, instead students will write an essay in class. In order to write this essay students will need to collect as much information from their families. This essay will be written in class on May 3, 2019. You can help your child prepare to do this, by having him/her practice writing the essay at home. Whatever is written at home must not be taken to class, it is merely practice.

Reminder

Students have a Bible Test on Monday March 18, 2019. Review notes were given.

Math Update

Students practiced solving problems in drawing and interpreting pictographs and bar graphs. They will be tested on Friday 22nd Mar.

Math Homework

Do Mathletics . New work have been assigned yesterday afternoon. So do not be fooled by the comment “I do not have any, I finished all at school.”

SCIENCE Update

Students learnt about the three types of soil and their properties. 3B was able to design an investigation to find out which type of soil plants grow best in. They used models to help plan and visualize the process. 3A will do the same activity on Monday. Here are some pics in the attachment.
