Subject Updates, Test Reminder

Happy Weekend!

Wow, what a way to end the week. Science Fair was a huge success and I received great feedback from the judges! The kids should feel so proud of themselves for following through on their scientific process, experimenting and trying something new.

We hope you have a great weekend of rest and for some, we’ll see you bright and early tomorrow at South Sound Stride!

Also, if anyone was able to visit Grade 3 projects and took photos, can you email me? We would love to create a collage and share on the blog of our Science Fair day.

Thank you all again for your support with your child’s learning and exploration in science!

Math

We worked on Terra Nova worksheets which I have in class and will send home next week. Here is a link to help with PRACTISE click on Grade 3 Science or Math or Reading. The second test on Time will be given on Wednesday April 17. It will test elapsed time using number lines and some simple word problems on time.

SCIENCE

We did a summary revision on soil. All students should have their science notebooks and workbooks to study from. We also did some Terra Nova practice in Science. Will complete it next week.

Test Reminder :

TEST on soils Tuesday April 16, 2019.

Literacy

Students carried out a Grammar test this week. Students spent literacy sessions this week doing Terra Nova test past papers, which we are also reviewing in class. These papers will be sent home next week, for continued review.

Social Studies

Monday April 15, students will begin writing their heritage essay, this essay will be written over a period of  2-3 days. Students are required to take the response received from their family interview. They can take along notes to help with writing the essay, but not a pre-written essay.

Grade three visited the Bodden Town Mission House and gained a wealth of knowledge about Cayman’s traditional houses, food, folklore, education, travels and religion. The Grade three class was also visited by a local entertainer (Michael Blackburn) from the Pauze Entertainment Group – a local christian rap group. He spoke about his life growing up in Cayman, the differences in his childhood and Cayman today, what aspects of Cayman folklore led to him pursuing music and the importance of being a christian in a changing world.

Subject Updates, Field Trip Reminder

Hope you find some time to relax and enjoy your children this weekend. Here are the updates for the week of April 1, 2019.

Literacy Update

Students learned about adverbs that tell how. We reviewed the topic of adjectives: adjectives that tell what kind and how many, comparing with adjectives and special kind of adjectives – called, articles. Students will not be carrying out an oral book summary using their words in sentences, instead, we will spend Monday and Tuesday reviewing for the Grammar test, on Wednesday April 10, 2019. Students

Students also practiced for Terra Nova, using past papers found online.

Social Studies Update

Students continue to learn about the heritage of the Cayman Islands. This week students learned more about the national symbols and housing of the Cayman Islands; how houses were built, what was used to build houses, and the types of houses that were built in traditional Cayman, compared to now.

Field Trip reminder:

Please be reminded of the Field trip to the Bodden Town Mission House on Thursday April 11, 2019. Students are required to make a payment of $8 by Tuesday, April 9.

Math Update

Some students worked on the unit-TIME.  A test on time will be given on Tuesday-April 9, 2019. This will test the following:

  1. Writing the digital time when given an analogue clock.
  2. Drawing the hands on a clock to show the given time.
  3. Matching the time with digital and analogue clocks
  4. Telling time two ways using past the hour and to the hour.

All students practiced for Terra Nova using past papers found online.

There were some topics that we have not covered as yet but I was able to use the opportunity to teach those topics in a way that would allow them to choose the correct answer. I will be teaching the simple multiplication and division this week so they can be better prepared. Feel free to assist where you can.

A Terra Nova worksheet was sent home for the students to work on for next Friday. They are already working on others in class with similar skills and knowledge.

The next few days before school ends for this term, we will be diligently practicing for the standardized Terra Nova test in May.

Science Update

We continued developing knowledge and skills in understanding and learning about soil. A test on this will be given on Monday 15 April, 2019.

It will test the following: (see the following pages in their workbook for the information)

What is soil? Pg 266, Importance of soil. Pg 267. Layers of soil and its properties- humus, topsoil, sub soil, parent rock, bedrock pgs 268-269 and note book. Types of soil and its properties. Pgs 270-271. What is loam? Pg 272

SCIENCE WORKBOOKS WILL BE SENT HOME ON MONDAY APRIL 8.

We would like the students to take more of an active role in remembering their homework and being responsible for their learning so we will not be posting up the homework but relying on them writing it down in their Agendas. Please remind them to pack this in their bags daily.

If you need more information about the homework given for the week and you feel that what your child wrote down is unclear then, please feel free to email us and we can clarify.
