Updates for the week of Nov 15th, 2016

Hello Parents,

We had an over active four day week with choir rehearsals and International night preparations. Please see update below.

MATH -Calculate the AREA of an object using a grid.

– Being able to use the same figure to calculate perimeter and area.

READING  -Use of images to help with comprehension.

-Readers Theatre: students read aloud their parts with expression and fluency.

 

Ask child to make a sketch of a description they read in their library book.

 

GRAMMAR -Identify and write words in the singular possessive noun. Example: John’s hat; The dog’s bone.  
SCIENCE Review on ecosystems and food chains for Science test on Monday 21st Nov. Go over notes in Science workbook. –pgs 33-37.

Quiz child on cause and effect notes(see note book) on how ecosystems can change.  Text book-pg 188-190.

SOCIAL STUDIES Students spent time learning the dance and preparing for International night.  
BIBLE Review on ways that Jesus prepared for Ministry. Go over revision notes that was sent home in bible workbook.
ART Create abstract designs mimicking Peruvian textile.

Update for the week on November 7th, 2016

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION PARENT TIP
MATH -Reteach of measuring to the nearest cm and mm

– Reassessment on measurement.

-Calculate the perimeter of an object using given measurements and using a grid.

– More practice on word problems.

 

-Ask how many mm is 3cm, 6cm etc.

-Ask child to draw and measure a line that is 145mm, 115mm etc.

-Ensure that child goes on Mathletics and complete assigned work.

READING  -Use text dependent questions to help with comprehension.

GRAMMAR -Identify and spell special plural nouns. Example goose-geese; child-children Use your own knowledge of special plural nouns and ask oral questions while driving in the car.
SCIENCE How ecosystems change. They can change by natural methods-floods and fires and by living things like plants and animals.

Students used a cause and effect graphic organizer to help summarize information.

Ask child to bring home Science notebook so you can have them explain what caused the change in the ecosystem and what was the effect.
SOCIAL STUDIES Students spent time learning the dance.  
BIBLE The spiritual weapons we have as Christians to use in order to overcome temptations. (Ephesians 6:10-17) Read the scripture with your child and discuss.
ART Painted faux stones for the display for international night.  

 

 

 

 

Update for the week of October 31st, 2016

SUBJECT DESCRIPTION PARENT TIP
MATH -Measure to the nearest cm and mm inch

-Estimate and measure metric units of length

– Solve word problems by working backwards

 

Pick some objects around the house and ask your child what unit of measurement(mm, cm, meter and kilometer) they will use to measure the length.
READING  -Use the main idea and supporting details from a paragraph to summarize.

– Use a dictionary to look up the meaning  of words.

Pick some random words and get your child to look it up in a dictionary.
GRAMMAR -Identify common and proper nouns

-write plural nouns using –s, and -es

Ask child to spell the plural of nouns ending in sh, ch, x and y with a consonant before it. Example, church(es), bury(buries, brush(es)
SCIENCE Characteristics of land and water related ecosystems:

-freshwater(pond. Lake, river, stream)

– saltwater(ocean, coral reefs)

-desert

– grassland

-Tropical rainforest

-Temperate rainforest

Ask child to describe a few of these ecosystems. Ask questions like, what kind of temperature, how much rainfall, names of some animals and plants.
SOCIAL STUDIES Students spent time learning about Peru and learning a dance for the evening.  
BIBLE Ways in which Satan tempted Jesus in the wilderness. Ask child to tell how Satan tempted Jesus and how can he/she can overcome temptation when it comes his/her way.
ART Making a collage using geometric shapes and lines.
