Weekly Update

Literacy – Children will sit the STAR Reading Test on Tuesday.  A copy of the test results will be sent home that night.  These need to be signed by a parent and brought back to school the following day where they will be kept in the Children’s Assessment Portfolio.Numeracy – Children are introduced to some basic algebra concepts.  These include basic expressions, number sentences and how a function or rule can be used to solve a problem. As part of our ongoing assessment, children will also be sitting the STAR Math test on Thursday.  As per the reading assessment, a copy will be sent home to be signed and then returned to class the following day.Social Studies – Children will learn how symbols such as logos and flags can be used to identify countries.  The children will then create their own coat of arms with images/symbols with which they can identify.  They will also learn about various groups of influential people that came to Cayman, like the seafarers, settlers and pirates.NOTE: Please ensure all permission slips for next weeks field trip are returned to Miss Hurst.Bible – This week we look at the ninth commandment, you shall not lie.  Our memory verse is Ephesians 4:25.

Weekly Update

Math – we continue our focus on learning addition and subtraction strategies to help us mentally solve problems.  This week we focus on rounding and estimating to help us solve problems.Literacy – Children are busy finishing their Book Report presentation.  Children will present their book report to the class on Friday morning.  Children are presenting their work either as a poster or a Power Point.Inquiry – Children will create a timeline of important events in Cayman.  A historical walking tour of Georgetown run by the National Trust is currently being organized for either next week or the week after.  Permission slips will soon be handed outBible – We focus on the eighth commandment, you shall not steal.  Our memory verse is Ephesians 4:28.

Homework 16 – 19 November

Tuesday – Accelerated Math activity and Spelling workbook, Lesson 10, more words with long i.Wednesday – Grammar.  Identify and write singular and possessive nouns.  Challenge work p32 and 34.Thursday – Inquiry.  Creating a timeline.  Workbook p21-22.Friday and weekend.  The book report deadline has been extended to next week, Friday 26 November.  Children may use time during the weekend to start putting the presentation of their report together e.g. poster, PowerPoint or diorama.  Some class time will be given next week for children to finish their reports before they present it to the class on Friday, 26 November.

Challenge pages p30 and 32.Thursday – Reading.  Ensure all of the book/novel has been read and notes have been made for each chapter.  Complete character description and or summary of the book.  Refer to child’s agenda for specific information pertaining to each child.  This work may also be assigned over the weekend.

Weekly Update

Math – Children continue to build on their number knowledge and learn different strategies to mentally solve addition and subtraction problemsLiteracy – Children continue their book report work.  We are aiming to have our books read and all notes taken by Wednesday, November 10th.  Specific work regarding writing character descriptions and summaries of the book will be done in class.  Reading homework will be based on where the children are at with their book report work. Inquiry (Social Studies).  We start our new Social Studies unit.  We will be focusing on Cayman.  Our Big Question is, what does it mean to be Caymanian?  Children will be doing a variety of activities to learn more about Cayman and find answers to this question.  Field trips are also being organized relating to this topic.  At the end of this unit, the children will be doing a group or individual research (inquiry) project about a chosen aspect of Cayman.Bible – Our whole school Bible memory verse is the 6th commandment, “You shall not murder.” Exodus 20:13.  In class we are also looking at what it means to show respect and be a friend to others.  We are specifically looking at what it means to show love, as stated in 1 Corinthians 13:4 – 8.

Book Report

Dear parents,

 

Grade 3 has started a book report project.  The majority of the work will be completed in class, but here is an outline of the assignment for your own reference.

 

    1.    Choose and read a novel.

 

2.   While you read:

·        Refer to the Stop and Think Card.

·        Take notes at the end of each chapter.  What was the main idea?  What events took place?  Which characters were involved?

·        Create a character profile.  Draw the character and write some descriptive words about that character.

·        Also take time to read aloud parts of the book to your parents, teacher and friends.

 

3.   When you have completed reading the novel:

·        Write a paragraph summarizing the novel.

·        Write a paragraph describing the character.

·        Find out five facts about the author and write at least three questions you would like to ask the author.

·        Redesign the front cover of your book.

·        Give your book a star rating out of 5.

 

4.  Finally, you can create a poster, diorama (model) or Power Point to present your report to the class. This report is due Friday, the 19th of November.

 

 

 

 

A grade

Written responses are in depth and show excellent thinking skills.  Key events from the book are used to back up their opinions.  The summary is well sequenced and states the main events in the book.  Questions to the author are insightful.  The book cover design shows creativity.

 

B grade

Written responses show some thinking about the events that happened in the book.  Some reasons are given when expressing a personal view point.  The summary states the main events.  Questions to the author are appropriate.  Cover design depicts a main event in the book.

 

C grade

Completes all sections of the book report.  Misses recalling some main events from the book.  Does not or uses minimal examples from the book to back up their own opinions.

 

D grade

Some sections of the book report are not complete.   Written responses do not address the main events.  Report shows they do not have a thorough understanding of the book.
