September 9 – 13th Objectives and Homework

One week down and we are now beginning to dig into our curriculum! Here’s the rundown for the week. We know there have been some delays on emails reaching you, so we apologize for that inconvenience and hope you still check in on the blog till that is fixed. For those that ARE reading, please keep close attention for a question you’ll be asked, which you’ll answer to Mrs. Nyyssonen. That tells us who has been keeping themselves updated! 😉 …. On another note, I (Mrs. Jorge) just wanted to remind you of the email sent from Mrs. Durksen and appreciate your prayers at this time. I will see you all on Monday. <3 

Literacy: 

  • Spelling words with short vowel patterns and vocabulary words from our short story.
  • Reading – a short story titled ‘Rope Burn’ and extracts from Roald Dahl – James and the Giant Peach
  • Focus Skill – Plot – Conflict and Resolution
  • Writing – we will begin to plan and discuss a layout for an Expository piece of writing using a 5 paragraph structure, also students will write a paragraph from a daily prompt
  • Grammar skills  – Four kinds of sentences and a review of subjects and predicates

Numeracy:

  • This week we will review our knowledge of place value from grade 4 and move on to rounding numbers with decimals to the nearest whole number, tenths or hundreths. 
  • Students will also review equivalent fractions and use that information to compare and list least to greatest and greatest to least. 

Science:

  • We will begin our first topic, Earth Science! We will begin with understanding the Earth’s core and it’s layers. Then learn how the Earth’s movement is affected by tectonic plates. 

Social Studies:

    null
  • Students will complete a Cayman Islands Fact File and look at the explorers that discovered the ‘New World’.
  • Students will also begin to examine various types of maps.

Bible:

  • Abraham Trust and Obeys – we will examine Abraham’s journey and see how the life of Isaac foreshadows the life of Jesus.

Homework 

Spelling: pages 4 -6, due Friday 

Grammar: Workbook 

  • Page 2, due Wednesday
  • Page 3, due Friday

Reading: Each day for 20 Minutes 

Numeracy: Practice time tables 5 – 10 min a night.                           Mathletics will be available for homework by next week

  • Drills independently or with family
  • Multiplication.com 
  • Mathgames.com 

Reminders

Friday:

  • Dress Down $1 – Bahama’s relief fund through Samaritans Purse 
  • Fruity Friday, if you’d like a snack, bring some extra change!
  • Roald Dahl Day – be on the look out for some interesting characters!
