Build a backbone

We enjoyed making a model to represent the backbone – the spinal cord and the vertebrae. We want to add something next week to represent the discs.

Letter to Parents – 4/10/2013

Dear Parents,

We have had another busy and fun week in Grade 5. The students have worked very hard and are making good progress. In English we started our new novel ‘Out of My Mind’ and connected with other students around the world. They enjoyed connecting through edmodo and sharing thoughts on our kidblog. Today we made a ‘wordle’ about the character of Melody. In Math we started a new unit – Adding and Subtracting Decimals. They have been rounding whole numbers and decimals. In Science they enjoyed making models of backbones and next Thursday they will have another mini test on what they have learned this week and next.

Please ask your child the following questions over the weekend to reinforce concepts learned –

1. What is a wordle ? Go to www.wordle.net and they can show you how to make a wordle 🙂

2. Round the following numbers –  1,567 to the nearest thousand, then to the nearest hundred.  Round 7.6 to the nearest whole number.

3. Ask your child to explain ‘The Joseph Project’ to you.

The Remarkable Person project is due on Friday 11th October. Check out the grade 5 blog on the school website for new pictures.

Thank you as always in the cooperation of the education of your child,

Have a great weekend,

Janine Nyyssonen

This is a moderated site so students can only post after it has been approved by a teacher, so all internet safety rules will apply.

1. How did you do on the Math test ?   Are there any areas of Place Value you still need further help with. ( they can let me know on Monday ).

2.  What is the subject in an imperative sentence ? For example what would be the subject in – Take your books out.

The Grade 5’s are studying about cells, tissues, organs and body systems. As we started looking at the Body Systems they completed an experiment looking at how quickly the body reacts – measuring the time it takes in seconds for them to catch a ruler –
