Letter to Parents – 13th Sept, 2013

Dear Parents,

We have had a fun and educational week in Grade 5 ! The students have completed their first piece of writing – from brainstorming, to drafting, to writing conferences, to revising, proofreading and publishing. I have high standards when marking writing and I was very pleased with their first efforts ! The students choose their first library books, please encourage them to read, read, read ! Let’s see if we can be the class with the most A/R points 🙂 In Math we reviewed the four step plan for problem solving and worked on decimals and fractions. In Science they students are continuing on with Cells, next week we start learning more about the Body Systems.

Please ask your students the following questions to review class work –

1. What is 0.5 as a fraction ?

2. Use the following vocabulary words in a sentence – maven, conceited, designated. ( a sentence for each word )

3. How did God promise to bless Abraham ?

Thank you for your continued cooperation in the education of your child,

Janine Nyyssonen

Global Read Aloud

The Grade 5 students will be taking part in a project called Global Read Aloud as they read their first class novel – ‘Out Of My Mind’ by Sharon Draper. The students will read chapters of the book at the same time as hundreds of fifth grade classes across America and internationally. They will then connect with two classes to share ideas on edmodo, Skype to discuss and possibly even set up kidblogs to share their writing. This is going to be an exciting adventure into global reading ! We will start on 30th September, so check the blog for updates.

Some of our learning resources can be found on the link
