My Own Government Ministry

The 3rd grade students did a wonderful job on a final Social Studies project about a government ministry of their choice. A highlight of this project was the collection of clever ideas students came up with for how they would make improvements to their chosen ministry. Here is what they said!

Practice for TerraNova testing for the 5 – 9th of May

Grade 1 – 6 will be doing TerraNova testing from the 5 – 9th of May.  These are standardized tests that are put out by ACSI in the USA.  Children will complete a variety of English and Math tests as well as a Science, Bible and Thinking Skill test.  Much of this content will have been taught during this Grade 3 year.  However, because they are being assessed on a year’s worth of work, it is important that the students take time to review for these tests.  The student’s in Grade 3 will be coming home with a practice Math and English test to complete during their Spring break.  These tests will be marked when they get back to school on the 28th of April.  I have also found some excellent websites with online practice tests, quizzes or games to further help the children in the revision process.  There will also be more in class revision from April 28th – May 3rd, the week before the TerraNova testing.

I know the student’s have all done really well with tackling the new concepts in Grade 3 and I look forward to seeing them put in their best effort when reviewing and completing these tests.  Hard work gets results!

Here are some helpful links for student’s to practice for standardized tests.

The British Key stage 2 links with the American Grade 3- 4.  Here you can find different English, Math and Science games which the students can play.

Fun Field Trip to Rum Point

As Mrs. Morgan prepares to go on maternity leave, Grade 3 thought it would be fun to head to Rum Point for a day of fun in the sand, surf and sun!  Here’s a look at what we did.

Some of the students made a new game called Baket, a combination of cricket and baseball!

Homework 31 March – 4 April

Monday – Spelling.  Lesson 27.  Suffix -tion and -sion. Workbook p83-85

Tuesday – Math. Volume and time.  Workbook p45.

Wednesday and Thursday – Math. Revision for our Measurement test on Friday.  In class we will have started on the Study Guide and Review, and Chapter 10 test from the textbook p456-461.  This needs to by completed by Friday morning.  I have also asked the student’s to complete all Measurement activities on Mathletics.  We will be doing some of these activities during our computer Math session on Thursday.

Friday – Measurement Math test.

Our new Science unit focuses on the area of Physical Science.  This week we are looking at the three states of matter – solid, liquid and gas.  The students have enjoyed completing activities on this http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/science/materials/ website.  We’ve often chosen the older task as they are generally more appropriate for the Grade 3 level.  Each of these activities have a quick Science quiz which the student’s can do as they prepare for their upcoming Science Terra Nova test in May.

Homework 17 – 21 March

Monday – Review for tomorrow’s Measurement Math test on length in customary and metric units.  Children need  to complete the textbook work from this morning’s lesson (p417) and do the cumulative review on p418-419.  They can also do the online practice test at http://www.glencoe.com/sec/math/studytools/cgi-bin/msgQuiz.php4?isbn=0-02-105732-X&chapter=9&headerFile=7

Tuesday – Spelling Homework. Spelling workbook p76-78

Wednesday and Thursday – Work on Social Studies project.  All projects must be handed in on Friday 21st of March.  Please see your child’s agenda for details on this project.

Assessments: This week the children will be sitting the Grade 3 Storytown Benchmark Mid-Year Assessment.  This assessment is part of our normal classroom literacy program.  It is also good practice for their TerraNova tests coming up in  May.  The assessments will be sent home next week so parents can see their child’s achievement levels.

Other news

This week is Heroes Week where we focus on what it means to be a hero rather than a bully.   We will look at our school’s definition of a bully as “an act of repeated aggressive behavior in order to intentionally cause harm to others.  Bullying is characterized by in imbalance of power or strength.  Behaviors may include: verbal harassment, physical assault, name calling, exclusion, social isolation, coercion, or cyber bulling through cell phones or the use of the internet.”  Our class will look at how we can stand up to bullies (be a powerful bystander) and how we can be a good friend to others.

Sports Day is this Friday at the Truman Bodden Complex.  Please hand in all permission slips and the bus/snack fee of $4.

Our Rum Point field trip is next Thursday, 27th of March.  Please hand in these permission slips and the accompanying $10 for lunch and transport costs.  We’d love to have as many parent volunteers as possible!
