Math Update

The end of the school year is almost upon us. We have been robustly learning a variety of ways to multiply and divide numbers. All students should know their x 2, x 5 and x 10 fluently but I notice there are a few that are still struggling, Please work with your child on these. If your child knows all the times tables up to 12 then that is great. However, if not –then do not be dismayed as they have learnt a number of strategies to obtain the answer. They will eventually have to be fluent in all their timetables as they go up the grades.

Here are the strategies we did in class (except the strip diagram)

Science Update

We are focusing on sources of water and the water cycle. The students are required to know the processes involved and a description of what it is. We will be planning a field trip to a water treatment plant very soon so the students can have a real life experience of their learning.

Let your child use this link to revise and reinforce what was taught in class. If your child missed any lessons this week then this will be helpful. Link

Literacy Update

Students learned about adverbs that tell how. We reviewed the topic of adjectives: adjectives that tell what kind and how many, comparing with adjectives and special kind of adjectives – called, articles. Students will not be carrying out an oral book summary using their words in sentences, instead, we will spend Monday and Tuesday reviewing for the Grammar test, on Wednesday April 10, 2019. Students

Students also practiced for Terra Nova, using past papers found online.

Social Studies Update

Students continue to learn about the heritage of the Cayman Islands. This week students learned more about the national symbols and housing of the Cayman Islands; how houses were built, what was used to build houses, and the types of houses that were built in traditional Cayman, compared to now.

Field Trip reminder:

Please be reminded of the Field trip to the Bodden Town Mission House on Thursday April 11, 2019. Students are required to make a payment of $8 by Tuesday, April 9.

Math Update

Some students worked on the unit-TIME.  A test on time will be given on Tuesday-April 9, 2019. This will test the following:

Math Update

During the week of Inspection we were finishing up DATA and we started the unit on TIME. The students have been practicing telling time using both an analogue and digital clock. They also learnt how to calculate elapsed time in increments of 1 hour.

The areas that needed the most work was telling time in words using the analogue clock. For example, 3:50 can also be said as fifty minutes past three or ten minutes to four.

Using a number line helped students calculate elapsed time.

In Math computation we started division by using manipulatives (counters) to group large numbers into smaller ones. The division equation was also introduced.

36 ÷ 4 = 9

The terms dividend, divisor and quotient were introduced.

No Math homework this week.

Science Update

We completed the unit on Soil and have been practicing howto answer questions related to the topic. In addition students have been working on different ways to show what they understand about the topic.

In the upcoming week we will continue to practice and a formative test will be given to inform me what further intervention might be needed. A test on Soil will be given on Tuesday April 9.

PLEASE USE THIS WEEKEND TO WORK ON SCIENCE FAIR PROJECTS. FOLLOW THE LINKS THAT WERE SENT IN A PREVIOUS EMAIL, TO GET SOME IDEAS.

This week students learned about Adjectives – they learned what an adjective is, different types of adjectives; that tell what kind and how many.

The writing type students are learning about this half of the term, is Descriptive Writing (Fictional Story).

We also practiced using the dictionary, please allow your child to continue doing so at home. They can practice dictionary use by searching for the words from their spelling lists.

There are no new words this week. In your child’s folder you will find two lists of vocabulary words. Students received those words on previous spelling lists, students need to review them. I will choose words at random from both lists for the next Spelling Test on March 29, 2019.

Social Studies

For this half term, students will be learning about the Cayman Islands and the contribution of other nationalities. Students will be exploring their lives presently and what is accessible to them in present day. This week students started learning about history (the past), as the past helps to shape the present.

Project

Students were given a project and an essay preparation outline this week.

There will be no test for this half of the term, instead students will write an essay in class. In order to write this essay students will need to collect as much information from their families. This essay will be written in class on May 3, 2019. You can help your child prepare to do this, by having him/her practice writing the essay at home. Whatever is written at home must not be taken to class, it is merely practice.
