Update – February 4-8, 2019

Literacy – This week we focused on Opinion Writing, we explored topics, discussed how we felt about each topic, wrote our ideas, organized our ideas, stated our opinion, wrote our reasons and an example or examples and restated our opinion by rewording it. Students had the opportunity of hearing how each other stated what they wanted to write, and helping to properly compile information, as we carried out three of four Opinion writings together.

Please have your child practice writing at home. As reading week is approaching, a possible topic statement to explore could be “It is better to read fairy tales than comic books.”

We also reviewed verbs in the tenses in preparation for the Verb test which students carried out today. Students continue to enjoy reading and having the BFG read to them.

Social Studies – Students continue learning about Human Resources. This week we explored Producers and Consumers – The importance of each, how they contribute to each other. Students were able to identify who makes and sells goods and who buys the products. Next week we will integrate Social Studies and literacy. Students will be making items based on the stories we will be reading. For each item, students will identify the different natural resources that were used as ingredients.

Reminder: Jr. Apprentice Project is due February 15th. – The grade three market day is for students to sell the products they made as part of their Jr. Apprentice Project. We go from 1:10-2:30 pm.

Science Test 2 on Simple and compound Machines- This will focus on explaining how the simple machine works.

This week in Science was spent doing the test, correcting homework and revising. Next week we start a new Unit on Soil. The students will be given a hard copy of their Science project next week. This will be due on March 15th, 2019.

Math this week covered collecting, tallying and representing data as a pictograph. Students used data to draw pictographs. They also interpreted pictographs. Here is a brief look at a pictograph.

We also did Math computations where we are using subtraction to fine the missing number. Example, 84 + □  = 145 . Questions were given to cater for varying abilities. Students copied this from the board to be completed for homework-due next Friday 15th. Kids are allowed to do questions that are to their ability. Some students counted up and some used the column subtraction method.

Please pay attention to the following as next week is going to be a busy one.

Update January 29-February 1, 2019

Literacy – We spent this week reviewing verbs in the tenses (present tense, past tense and future tense). Students have an upcoming test on Friday February 8th, this will cover verbs in the tenses. The following week students will start learning about helping verbs.

There are no spelling words for this week, instead, please use the time to practice with your child for the test on Friday. Each child has worksheets in their folder that you may use to practice at home.

Students have been carrying out opinion writing in class. They are encouraged to practice writing at home. You can give your child a topic and discuss it orally before he/she begins the writing process.

Reminder – Students will present their oral book summary on Monday. As your child reads, please have him/her write down two words from the book being read. Words must be written in the small booklet provided. Students should take their booklets to school on Tuesdays.

MATH:  Students completed 2 summative tests. Corrected papers will be returned to students next week and placed in their portfolios. Students learnt how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. A test on this will happen next Thursday.

We will be starting the unit on DATA next week and this should be completed in two weeks.

SCIENCE: Students learnt to identify and explain a compound machine. We also revised for the Science test next week.

Here are the revision prompts for next week:

  1. Definition of the terms- fulcrum, inclined plane, lever, pulley, screw, simple machine, wedge and work. See glossary on workbook.
  2. Examples of simple machines. The homework sheets that were returned would have these. Here are a few:

screw driver-wheel and axel

Shovel-lever

Jar lid-screw

  • Students will do pages 432-436 in their workbook, to be returned on Monday for correction in preparation for the test on Wednesday.

PLEASE ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO MEMORIZE THEIR BIBLE VERSES AND CHECK THEIR AGENDA TO SEE THAT IT IS SIGNED AS AN INDICATION THAT THEY SAID IT.

Update January 21-25

Literacy: This week students learned about verbs in the future tense. We will review verbs in the tenses (past, present and future) next week.

Please use the following link to work with your child at home.  ComprehensionPractice   You can choose  the most appropriate level for your child. When doing comprehension, please have your child adhere to these comprehension strategies: Adjust reading rate (don’t read too slow, don’t read too fast – meaning of what was read will be lost and notable expressions will be missed), discuss what is read, reread, use text/story as support, use a dictionary.

Here is a way for students to have fun with Words

Please see your child’s folder for their vocabulary words, to be studied for Spelling test Friday February 1st.

Reminder: As students read their library books, they are required to write down two words (these can be words they have never met before, or words that they have met, can spell but do not know the meanings of). They are also required to write the meanings of the words, this must be done in the the small booklets provided. Booklets must be taken to school on Tuesdays, words are used in class to make sentences.

Social Studies – Students continue learning about resources- Human resources – this week we explored industries and how these use renewable and non-renewable resources; this will take us to Producers and consumers next week.

Students who will be selling their goods at school, will get an opportunity to do so on February 11th, 1:10-2:30 pm – Grade three Market Day. Employees/volunteers you may come by to help your employer with sales. We will set up along the Breeze Way close to Wee Care.

Reminder: Phase 2 of the Social Studies Project is due February 15th.

We have been doing fractions every Monday to Thursday since the start of the term and are now ready for testing. On Fridays we focus on math computations, and word problems.

In Science we have been learning about simple machines and the students will have a project coming home soon (will send information next week so as to avoid information overload).

See table below for information on testing dates.

SUBJECT DATE What will be tested
MATH 29 Jan. 2019 Identifying and naming proper and improper fraction as well as whole numbers from models.
31 Jan. 2019 Represent fractions on a number line.Comparing fractions using models.
SCIENCE 6 Feb. 2019 Identifying simple machines.Give the meaning of key words and concepts from the lesson.
11 Feb. 2019 Explaining how simple machine works. (questions will be focused on application of knowledge rather than recollection of information)

Math HW will be sent home since they will help the students practice and prepare for the test. The more practice the more confident the student will become. Please work with your child. If there are any concerns you come across while doing this please let me know.

Math Homework: Homework book-pages 171-172, 189-190, 199-200, 205-208

Poetry Assignment

Rational: to help students develop a love for reading poetry.

Objectives: to analyze parts of a poem (e.g. rhyming words, main idea, symbolism), to clearly and confidently present information to the class.

How it will work: Each student will be required to research and select a poem they would like to share with the class.  They will then complete the poetry assignment sheet and hand it in to Mrs. Morgan by their scheduled Friday.  Mrs. Morgan will then go over the poem with the student, to ensure the student is ready to teach the class about the poem.  Mrs. Morgan will also photocopy the poem so each student can have a copy. Then on Monday during our normally scheduled poetry time, the student will present and teach their poem to the class.  Please see your child’s agenda for the poetry assignment sheet and the schedule for when they are to present their poem.

Assessment: Mrs. Morgan will assess their presentation skills (speaking to the class and answering any questions) as part of their Oral Language grade.  Mrs. Morgan will also assess the written poetry assignment sheet to see how well the student has analyzed the parts of the poem.  This will be used as part of the student’s Reading grade.

Places to find poems

Look through our school library for a book on poems.  Ask Ms. Galvao (our librarian) or Mrs. Morgan where to find these the next time we are at library.

Check out the Georgetown Public Library for any poems for kids.

Parents and students enjoy learning about Cayman Heritage.

This afternoon the children doing their Cayman Heritage Inquiry PowerPoint presentations showed their work to the class and a group of parents.  I was so proud of their hard work and presentation skills.  These are the children of the 21st century!

Inquiry Project

Inquiry Project

To help us better understand Cayman Heritage, each student will be inquiring into a certain aspect of Cayman.  The children have now chosen their topics and written questions to guide their Inquiry.  In class, research time will be given on Monday and Wednesday afternoon.  The rest of the research will need to be completed at home as part of their weekly homework or during the coming long weekend (8 – 11 November).  All research must be completed by Tuesday 12th of November.  Students will start working on their presentations from the week of the 12-15th of November.  The style of presentation is up to each student.  It can be a poster, diorama, Power Point, drama sketch, research report etc.  We will use class time on Wednesday 13th of November and Friday 16th of November to work on the presentations.  But presentation work must also be completed at home so children get the best results.  Students will present their work on either the 18th or 20th of November.  I can inform parents about the time and date their child will present their work so that you can come and view the presentations.

Rubric   for Inquiry Project
  D C B A
Questions Teacher directs the   focus of the Inquiry questions. Some teacher   assistance needed to write the focus for the Inquiry questions. Little to no   teacher assistance needed to write the focus for the Inquiry questions. Independently   writes thoughtful and engaging questions.
Research

  •   Utilizes effective reading techniques e.g. skimming and   scanning, finding the main idea, supporting details and the sequence of   events.
  •   Can use a variety of sources for information e.g.   internet, books, personal expert.
  •   Records where they found that information (source).
  •   Records information neatly and in their own words i.e.   does not copy sentences/paragraphs from their source.
  •   Answers their questions which were written to guide   their Inquiry.
Expectations   for Grading Meets only one or   two of the research criteria. Meets three of the   research criteria.  May meet more of   the criteria but only with a lot of teacher/adult input. Meets four of the   research criteria Meets all five of   the research criteria.
Presentation

  •   Uses titles and headings appropriately.  If using a computer, the font is easy to   read.
  •   Uses creativity in their presentation.
  •   Good use of color and pictures which link to their   topic.
  •   Written work adheres to standard writing conventions   such as it is free of or has minimal spelling errors and correct sentence and   paragraph structure is used.
  •   Stands confidently in front of the class and clearly   shares their questions and answers to their Inquiry.
  •   Shows a thorough understanding of their topic by   effectively answering questions from others at the end of their presentation.
Expectations   for Grading Meets only one or   two of presentation criteria. Meets two or three   of the presentation criteria. Meets three to four   of the presentation criteria. Meets all the   presentation criteria.  Shows a   confidence about their topic as an ‘expert’ in this area.

Some tips on how to make certain presentations:

  1. General information on how to conduct research or how to do a research paper.

http://arts-humanities.squidoo.com/k12interactiveresearch

  1. How to make a diorama:

http://jimmie.squidoo.com/shoebox-diorama

If children make a diorama, they must also present an oral report where they state the questions they asked and the answers they found.

  1. How to make a poster. The poster should be large enough so that all questions and answers are written out and can be read during the presentation.

http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Poster

  1. How to make a Power Point

http://voices.yahoo.com/teaching-children-create-simple-powerpoint-presentations-618038.html

http://www.actden.com/pp/ This gives step by step instructions for creating slides etc.

  1. A research report should be typed up probably on Microsoft Word and then printed out and bound together to be like a booklet.  The booklet should have a title page with subsequent pages headed up with their questions and answers written underneath the questions.  Pictures should also be included in the report.

  1. A drama sketch is like an oral report, except the student may dress in a costume that relates to their area of study.  They can act out different parts of their research.  They will also need to state their questions and answers they found out just like any other oral report.

Final note to students:

Aim to spend at least 20 – 30minutes a day between now and when the research is due, Tuesday 12th of November.  You will not be able to complete all your research in one or two nights so use your time wisely. You can answer your questions in any order.  Make sure you write the information in your own words and that you record where you got the information from.  Always go back and check the Inquiry rubric to make sure you are meeting the criteria for an aim.  Always aim high and do your best!

Final note to parents:

Children generally do need help to complete research projects, particularly at this young age.  You can help them by maybe finding an appropriate internet site or putting them in touch with a local Caymanian who might have some “expert” knowledge.  You can definitely also by helping them understand what they are reading.  It’s important to break the research time into manageable time amounts otherwise it will seem too overwhelming.  The written work should be in the child’s own words.  You can help with presentation ideas but please let the work be the child’s work.

Art in Grade 3

We made traditional Caribbean houses using mixed media.

We looked at a variety of Caribbean houses and then did a pencil sketch of a Caribbean house.  Next the students used bright colors to paint their house.  Then the students outlined the house with black marker.   The students then cut out the house and glued it onto hard cardboard pieces to make the house pop up on it’s blue backing.  Finally the students used construction paper to cut out palm trees,  a sun, shutters and stairs for their houses.

The students worked really hard and I’m very proud of how well their art work turned out!  Come on into Open House this evening (6:00 – 7:30pm) to have a look at the finished project.
