Numeracy (11/03 – 15/03)

We move onto our next strand for the term: Probability and Statistics

This week we will focus on the following:

What is data?

https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/data.html

Qualitative or quantitative data

Data handling cycle

Mean, median, mode and range of data

https://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/mean.html
https://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/mode.html
https://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/median.html
https://www.mathsisfun.com/definitions/range-statistics-.html

Next week we will do a class survey and revise tally charts, bar graphs, pictographs and line graphs.

We will then learn how to represent data in line plots and stem-and-leaf plots.

Numeracy and Science (25/02 – 01/03)

Numeracy

Multiplying fractions:

  • Multiply a fraction by a fraction
  • Multiply a fraction by a whole number
https://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions_multiplication.html

Data Management and Probability

  • Construct a sample space using a tree diagram, list or chart to represent all possible outcomes.
https://www.mathsisfun.com/data/probability.html

Science

Students will be doing an experiment in groups to answer a testable question. They will follow the scientific process and record their findings.

Testable question: Will salt water affect the boiling temperature of water?

Numeracy and Science (18/02 – 22/02)

Numeracy

  • Finish with adding and subtracting like and unlike fractions / mixed numbers (Monday)
  • Multiplying whole numbers by fractions, fractions by fractions and mixed numbers by fractions (Tuesday – Friday)
https://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions_multiplication.html

Science

  • How does Ocean Water move? Waves, currents and tides
  • Class discussion on pages 442 to 450 in the textbook (Monday)
  • Open book test on the above pages (Tuesday)

Mathletics

Each student has their own username for the Maths website Mathletics. I have provided them with their login cards and it should be pasted in their agenda books. We have used the website many times during our Lab period and students are accustomed to using it. I will let you know via the blog and their agenda when I have assigned a task for them.

The students may access the website on a PC or you can download the app from your relevant app store.

Visit the following website:

https://community.mathletics.com/signin/#/student

Download the app:

All results are recorded for me to see and students can attempt the activity as many times as they want in one sitting. Let me know if you would like me to reassign the task for your child. If they get stuck, there is an “I” button at the top right of the page and it will explain the concept to them.

There is also an abundance of fun, interactive Maths games for them to play on the website.

Numeracy and Science (11/02 – 15/02)

Numeracy

We will continue with adding and subtracting mixed numbers as well as solving word problems with fractions in our Ready Maths books.

On Tuesday, we will do a short class quiz.

Science

This week we will carry on with the experiment we did last week.

We will focus on how we record our results from an experiment and write a conclusion based on our findings.

Term 2 – Science

Science

This term we are focusing on the ocean in the following three characteristics – physical, geological and ecological.

For the past few weeks, we have focused on the physical characteristics of the ocean as follows:

  • Composition of the ocean water
  • Salinity of the water and what causes it to be salty
  • Currents, tides, buoyancy, temperature, density and waves

Last week we did an experiment to answer the following question: Is salt water denser than tap water?

We revised the scientific method and spent a lot of time discussing independent, dependent and controlled variables in an experiment.

Term 2 – Numeracy

Numeracy

Over the past few weeks the school has been focusing on fractions. In Grade 5, we have covered the following:

NOTE: Each provided link is to Math’s is Fun.At the bottom of each page there are practice questions if you would like extra practice for your child.

Equivalent fractions

  • You can make equivalent fractions by multiplying or dividing both top and bottom by the same amount.
  • You only multiply or divide, never add or subtract, to get an equivalent fraction.
  • Only divide when the top and bottom stay as whole numbers.
https://www.mathsisfun.com/equivalent_fractions.html

Comparing and ordering fractions

  • There are two main ways to compare fractions:using decimals, or usingthe same denominator.
  • We have to convert the fractions to the same denominator in order to compare.
https://www.mathsisfun.com/comparing-fractions.html

Proper and Improper fractions, mixed numbers and simplification of fractions

Proper fraction – has a top number less than its bottom number

https://www.mathsisfun.com/proper-fractions.html

Improper fraction – has a top number larger than (or equal to) the bottom number.

https://www.mathsisfun.com/improper-fractions.html

Mixed numbers – a whole number and a proper fraction combined.

https://www.mathsisfun.com/mixed-fractions.html

Simplification of fractions – To simplify a fraction, divide the top and bottom by the highest number that can divide into both numbers exactly.

https://www.mathsisfun.com/simplifying-fractions.html

Adding and subtracting like and unlike fractions

  • When we add or subtract fractions, the denominators must be the same.
  • First add or subtract the whole numbers, then if required, convert mixed number to improper fraction.
  • Our final answer must be simplified.
  • All working out must be shown.

Letter to the Parents 24/2/2017

Dear Parents,

Happy Culture Awareness Day ! It is really wonderful to celebrate all the cultures we have represented here at FBCS.
In literacy we have moved back into Storytown and the students studied a informational narrative about the tidal zones in Cobscook Bay. In writing we have been looking at adjectives and elaborating sentences. The students have also learned to create a padlet.
In Social Studies we continue on with our study of Tourism in the Cayman Islands.
School closes at noon next week Tuesday 28th February.
Have a wonderful mid term break.

Letter to the Parents – 27/1/2017

Dear Grade 5 Parents,

We are happy to be rolling in to the weekend : ) Looking forward to seeing many of you later at the Roll-a-thon!
We have enjoyed reading ‘Tuck Everlasting’ this week – as we came to the climax of the novel. Next week the students will be starting a storyboard in class.
The students have almost finished the rough drafts of the persuasive essay and will be writing the final version next week.
In Social Studies as we complete the end of the ‘Natural Environment’ study the students will present their endangered animal report in class on Monday.
Tuesday (31st Jan ) is Sports Day – as a reminder the students will wear a red top and P.E shorts.
Have a wonderful weekend !
