Math and Science updates for the week of October 7, 2019

Hello Parents,

We were able to complete our Math testing on Place value and rounding. The test results will be sent home in their portfolio over the mid term. We have started a new topic in Math called Data. This week students learned to generate questions for investigation and how to organize the data in a pictograph.

In Science students will be working in groups at school to construct an ecosystem of their choice. They will be building a diorama and each student has a small research part to do at home and then bring to class so all the pieces can be put together. Please provide any materials that you child may ask for. See document below for what the research parts are. Your child will inform you as to which part they are doing.

Science homework was given as a revision for a Science test on Ecosystems which will be given on Wednesday 16, October, 2019.

SCIENCE GROUP PROJECT

The task of each group is to research the ecosystem, its inhabitants and problems the ecosystem is facing because of people. Specific information that each team needs to gather about the particular ecosystem they have chosen includes:

  1. Information about at least three plants found in the ecosystem (may include more). □
  2. Information about at least five animals found in the ecosystem (may include more). □
  3. The category (producer, consumer, decomposer) that each organism that they have identified is included in. □
  4. The type (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore) of each consumer. □
  5. The role (predator or prey) of each consumer. □
  6. Three food chains in their ecosystem. □
  7. A map that shows the approximate location of an example of their ecosystem. (The map can be as small an area as the schoolyard to a full world map.) □

Have a good week!
