Weekly Update (for this week and next)

MathWe continue our focus on multiplication and division.  At this stage, children should know 0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 11 multiplication facts.  They are learning to use strategies such as using known facts, repeated addition and doubling to solve the other multiplication facts.ReadingWord Sleuths and Booksworms did an excellent job on their book reports.  Their posters are displayed outside the class if you would like to take a look.  Some students also created excellent Power Point presentations to display their work.  The comprehension strategies we are currently focusing on are making judgements and inferences.  We have some new Reading Comprehension board games which the children are playing in their guided reading groups.  Some children have also started using a program called Fluency Reader to help improve their reading fluency.WritingChildren are writing an opinion essay on a topic of their choice.  The focus is on on writing paragraphs with a strong topic starter and then details to support their reasons.  Children are also learning to write an introductory and closing paragraph for their opinion essay.ScienceGrade 3 has started doing a variety of general science lessons in preparation for the upcoming SAT tests, which will be held after Spring Break.  We have currently looked at rocks – what makes a rock, the Rock Cycle and the different types of rocks.  The following site has some complimentary activities the children can do increase their understanding about this topic. http://www.learner.org/interactives/rockcycle/
