Update January 14-18, 2019

Literacy – Students continue learning about verbs. This week we studied verbs in the past tense. Next week we will wrap up the topic of verbs by paying attention to verbs in the future tense. Students have been writing opinion pieces this week, focusing on their opinion about a topic and giving reasons for their opinion. Next week they will delve deeper into writing by giving an example to aid their opinion and writing a closing.

Please have your child review verbs at home, you may use the following links to do so: practice1 practice2 practice3

Reminder: On Monday students will do their oral book summary about the book they are reading presently. Students are reminded to write two new words learned from the book being read and also write down the definition of each. Students are required to do so in the small booklet provided and take it to school on Tuesday.

Social Studies – This week students learned about Businesses, capital and income. They also learned about the barter system and how it was used in the Cayman Islands and the Caribbean in previous years.

Reminder: Phase 1 of the Social Studies project is due Friday January 25th. No vocabulary words will be sent home this week, please use the time to work on this phase with your child.

Phase 1

  1. Choose the type of business you would like to have (goods/service)
    1. Once chosen, this cannot be altered. Your child’s grade will depend on how well they execute their business choice.
  2. Help your child work out a small budget (no more than $15.00) for materials and/or time needed to setup and run their business.
  3. You may help your child make the product(s). You must however work out with your employer (your child) whether you should be paid or if you are a volunteer.
  4. They must be able to explain what was done, materials that were/will be used. You should stay within budget.

Math – Students need more practice using models to write and identify mixed and improper fractions. Please reinforce using pictures wherever you can. Students also used number lines to represent fractions. We also used models and fractions strips to compare fractions. Here are some resources and links to help your child at home.

SCIENCE:

Students did experiments to investigate how simple machines work. They manipulated pulleys, levers, screw, inclined planes and wheel and axle. They should now be able name the six types of simple machines, identify simple machines in a picture and around the home, school and community. They are still working towards explaining how the simple machines make the work easier. Example, a pulley magnifies the force, an incline plane works easier by increasing the distance that the load had to move up.

Please feel free to participate in their learning by finding videos related to simple machines for grade 3 and working with your child if they are struggling.
