Daily Tasks: Thursday, 19th March – Numeracy and Science

Hello! Here is today’s daily tasks, essentially a lesson plan for the day.

Before you begin, read through these updates and reminders: Friday’s tasks for literacy and numeracy will be combined and continue to be, thank you for your patience as we found the best form of sending tasks.

  1. Remember to email me work that is completed by the end of the day so it can be recorded. This can be a picture or scanned.
  2. Comprehensive list of sites and logins coming soon. For now, check the emails Ms. Nyyssonen has sent.
  3. Reminder: Please retrieve all your books from the classrooms, you still need: Bible, Bible workbook, Math Connects text book (in Mrs. Jorge’s classroom), Handwriting workbook, and any literacy book just in case they were left in your desk. Also, get any tools you’ll need for math, ruler, pencils, erasers etc. Take tools home so you can create a good set up at home and have all the supplies you need. Admin and office staff will be there 8-3pm Monday – Friday.
  4. 5A and 5B, Bible will begin on Monday. Please make sure you have your Bible workbook and Bible to be prepared.

Science update:

  1. DIY Instrument is due Wednesday, March 25th.  You will need to email a video (2-3 min tops) demonstrating the two pitches your instrument can make and share the materials you’ve used.
  2. There will be a quizizz on Sound next Wednesday, March 25th. I will send the code on the day.

Numeracy update:

  1. Quizizz on Time, Tuesday, March 24th

Numeracy

Objective: Find elapsed time using addition and subtraction

Materials: Composition book, pencil, eraser

Similar to yesterday, you used the number line and able to count on to the next time using addition. You can do that again today and work it out on the page. This worksheet is just showing the beginning and end times without a number line. In many occasions when finding how much time has passed it’s not always the same, so that’s where you may have to use subtraction to find how many minutes or hours are remaining.

Method 1: You can convert all the time into minutes, subtract and then convert back into hours and minutes. (Example: 1:30 – 2:45, convert 1 hour and 30 minutes = 90 minutes – 2 hour 45 minutes = 165 minutes; 165 – 90 = 75 minutes, then convert to hrs and min = 1 hr 15 min. Within 75 minutes is 60 and remaining 15.)

Method 2: Use a number line to count up to the end time. (Example: 1:30 – 2:45) This can be done in hours and minutes.

Method 3: Similar to counting on a number line, count to the nearest hour and then minutes. (Example: 1:30 – 2:45, I know that 1:30-2:30 is 1 hour, but my end time is 2:45, so I can count on from 30-45 which is 15 OR subtract. Either way the remaining time is 15 minutes. So the total time is 1 hour 15 minutes)

Based on yesterday’s work you can begin asking yourself, ‘Was there anything that may have been confusing or you forgot about when finding elapsed time? What made me the most confused or unsure?’ Feel free to send me questions or concerns, I am happy to clarify the best that I can! As soon as you send me finished work I can mark it and send back to review.

  1. Use composition book
    • Title: Elapsed Time  and Date
    • Objective: Find elapsed time using addition and subtraction
    • Heading: Khan Academy Video Practice
    • Follow the video, pause when asked and in your composition book number your practice problems. Go along with the video to answer. Don’t worry if you’re wrong! It’s all about practice (:

https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/time/elapsed-time/v/times-differences-math-3rd-grade-khan-academy

2.   Then complete worksheet title ‘Finding Elapsed Time’.

3. Complete this Quizizz activity to remind you about facts on time.

Quizizz: Go to joinmyquiz.com and enter code: 282657

    • See the attachment, this is what you normally would have used but there was not enough time to print and send home, so feel free to copy this design or at least give you an idea of what to draw. Click ‘Sound’ for the sample sound .

Activity 2:

Lesson 1 of sound

Objective: Write definitions for sound

Materials: Science composition book, Science textbook, pencil, eraser

Daily tasks: Wednesday, 18th March – Numeracy and Science

Hello! Here is today’s daily tasks, essentially a lesson plan for the day.

Before you begin, read through these updates and reminders:

  1. Your work completed today should be sent to me, via email. This can be scanned or simply a picture. This is so I can be grading work and still send comments back, as well as keeping you on track with your work and not getting behind. If you’re having trouble sending work please let me know.
  2. Ms. Nyyssonen and I will send a comprehensive list of all the websites and log in information that students will be using during this time. Some may require specific ID logins, so those will be sent individually in due time.
  3. We want each day to be a fairly similar to class schedules, so be sure to read through tasks carefully so you can prepare your books for the day.
  4. Please retrieve all your books from the classrooms, you still need: Bible, Bible workbook, Math Connects text book (in Mrs.
  5. 5A and 5B, Bible will begin on Monday.

Mental Maths

This is a 15 – 20 minute activity. Here are some options to practice mental math.

  1. Group game, more than 1 player – Play ‘Buzz’ to practice your multiplication. Buzz is played by choosing a timetable and begin counting consecutively. When you get to a multiple of your timetable, instead of saying the number you say ‘BUZZ’. IF you say the number instead, you’re out. Try to be the last player! When you’re down to 2 people you can do a ‘splat buzz off’ stand back to back walk 5 steps and when you turn the first person to shot their arm out and yell splat, wins!
  2. This same game can be played to practice Spanish counting! instead of ‘Buzz’, say ‘Bah’
  3. Go to Quizizz and play any multiplication/timetable game and practice flashcards or an actual quiz for timing
  4. Use premade flashcards from Quizizz or Quizlet and play Around the World with siblings or FaceTime a friend to play with.
  5. Master of the Rounds: Round 1 – addition, Round 2 – Subtraction, Round 3 – Multiplication. With a deck of cards each person gets 10. Don’t look at your cards and when you begin, you and your opponent will flip over one card at a time and then solve. Play each round for 1 minute. If you don’t have a deck of cards, make one for now! decorate them but make sure you have 4 of each: Aces, 2 – 10, J, Q, K. Face card values, A = 1, J = 11, Q = 12, K = 13.

Numeracy

Objective: Use a number line to find elapsed time

Materials: Math-Aids worksheet, pencil/eraser, Youtube video, composition book

Activity:

In your composition book title: Elapsed Time, date, and write in the objective. Then the next heading, Elapsed Time Video.

  1. Watch this Youtube video on elapsed time.

Remember, elapsed time means the amount of time that has passed from the beginning to end of an event.

     2. While the video is playing, it will ask you questions on what you think the time will be after an hour or two etc. When a question is asked, pause and answer in your composition book, then press play to check your answer.

Video: https://youtu.be/zXFZUMjehDU

     3. Then, you will complete your worksheet that was given on Friday, titled ‘Elapsed time on a number line’.

4. If you are having trouble with this task, use either of these links to complete a Khan Academy activity which is a video and practice to support.

A. This one is to review time: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/early-math/cc-early-math-measure-data-topic/cc-early-math-time/v/telling-time-exercise-example-1

          B. This one is specifically a break down on elapsed time: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-third-grade-math/time/tell-time-on-number-line/v/telling-time-problems-with-number-line

Science

Objective: create a diagram for instrument

Materials: Blank piece of paper, pencil, eraser

Due Wednesday, 25th with write up and video

Activity: Watch two videos on sound and based on the information begin designing an instrument.

You can skip to 1 minute in, they talk through materials and steps which is more helpful than the others which just show the process. You don’t need to watch through the entire video, they go through a few instruments so feel free to jump around and watch the instrument you’re interested in!

  • Needs to be labeled with materials
  • After construction, if original design did not work, continue to create new diagrams so show progress and adaptations. (refer to post ‘Sound Project – DIY Instrument for rubric)
