Week beginning February 4, 2019

Please read the Parent ROAR email, it contains lots of useful information about Reading week (February 11-15).

Literacy: Hopefully your child has discussed the book that we are looking at over the next couple of weeks. If not, it’s “The Day The Crayons Quit” by Drew Dewalt. We are continuing are opinion writing whilst using this book as a prompt.

Math: comparing numbers and understanding greater than (>), less than (<) and equal too (=) using the signs. Understand sums greater than 10. Place value (tens and ones).

Science: continuing our learning about plants and animals.

Bible: continuing the story of Moses and understand that leaders must follow rules.

Friday February 1st – Rollathon, 3-5:30pm (see Parent ROAR email) & it is Fruity Friday – it is our turn to provide the fruit, please send it in on Friday morning.

Literacy: This week we are focusing our opinion writing on a fabulous children’s book….ask your child about it when they come home! In an effort to try and reduce the amount of paper we send home, words for Spellings will now be sent home by email only.

Math: Number sense – this week we are looking at numbers that are greater than and lesser than, simple addition and subtraction, counting forwards and backwards from 0-100 and counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

Science: How Do Animals Need Plants?

Bible: The Story of Moses – the life of Moses.

Memory verse: No memory verse this week due to the holiday. 

Week beginning January 21, 2019

As part of our study of animals this term, we are organizing a field trip for Grade 1. All information will be sent out when plans are finalised.

Literacy: This week we are continuing to learn about Opinion writing. We will be focusing on how to edit and improve our writing.

Math: This week we will be continuing our learning on fractions of a set/group using manipulatives and addition and subtraction. Please check your child’s Take Home folder for practise fraction work. There will be a test on Wednesday or Thursday based on our fraction work in class.

Science: This week continuing learning about life cycles of animals and how does a butterfly grow.

Bible: This week we are continuing the story of Joseph and how he forgave his brothers.

Memory Verse: It would be awesome if anyone can learn the whole of this week’s verse…..but, it is quite long. So, please make sure your child learns at least the first part. “You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. Psalm 65:9.”

Week beginning January 14, 2019

Monday January 14: The Don Shire Christian Puppetry team are coming for an assembly at 9 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

Literacy: We will be continuing our work on Opinion Writing. Discuss some opinions. What do you like? What do you feel? Ask your child about OREO! Look out for the weekly spelling sheet on Monday.

Math: We will understand fractions as part of a group. Review fractions as part of a whole and review adding and subtracting numbers.

Science: How do animals grow? We will be observing and recording changes in the life cycles of mammals and birds and comparing the ways young mammals and birds depend on their parents for their basic needs.

Bible: The Story of Joseph – ‘Joseph Forgives his Brother’. We will be looking at how people can still obey God even if they are in a difficult situation.

Welcome Back!

Week beginning January 7, 2019

In Literacy this term, we are focusing on Opinion Writing. This week we will be learning what an opinion is and discussing a range of opinion statements to think of our own views.

In Phonics this term, we are learning alternative ways to pronounce or spell different sounds. For example, alternative /c/ can sound like a /s/ – cat, cell. Please see the weekly spelling sheets which will be emailed out each week.

In Math, we are reviewing fractions (half and quarter) and learning one–third and one-fifth using a number line. We will also review adding and subtracting numbers to 20 on a number line.

In Science, we will be reviewing everything we have learnt about ‘Plants and Animals’ and will be introducing ‘Insects’.

In Bible, we will be looking at the story of Joseph.

Christmas Party

On Friday December 14, we will be having a Christmas Party. Children can wear their party clothes and sensible/comfortable party shoes. Please sign up to help us cater for the party. There will be a sign up sheet on Mrs Wade’s classroom door. If you can’t make it into school, please send us an email and we will sign you up.

We will also be having a Christmas gift opening. Please send in a small, wrapped, present for your child (with their name on it) to open at school. Shhh! Do not let them know it is from you!

Drinks/decorations can be brought in at any point next week and food on Friday morning.

No Spellings this week!

There will be no formal spelling test this Friday (December 7th). Instead, over the next 2 weeks, we will be reviewing all the sounds that we have learnt so far in Phonics and our High Frequency Words (HFW). Please remember to keep practising how to read and write your HFW.
